Downloading Issues with Opera (Solved)
« on: February 15, 2012, 05:47 PM »
I need some help.

In recent weeks, I've discovered a problem trying to download epub or mobi files from the site. My mac doawloads them as a pdf file. If I change the extension to epub or mobi when I save them, I'm not able to open the file. If I save them as pdf, i'm also not able to open the file.

I do not have this problem if the original file is in pdf format.

This only happens if I use Opera. I do not have the same issue if I use Safari.

I tried downloading a epub file from my email in Opera and it seems fine. So i think the issue is only with this site.

I've checked on the profile and settings and don't seem to see anything for downloading settings.

Has anyone else been having this issue or have any ideas? I'm out of ideas about what to do next.

I wish I could help you but I have no experience with Opera...I use Firefox and don't have any problems at all. Was there a recent update that may have a bug in it?

It was working fine in Jan and early Feb. I haven't upgraded anything since then.

That's why I'm scratching my head! 0.0

This is showing on the You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login page:

Changelog

Reverted DSK-335820 Opera replaces existing saved files without warning when the File Name field in the Save As dialog does not show the file extension
DSK-356977 Crash when clicking extension button with open popup
CORE-32642 Support Ctrl+F5 and Shift+F5 for unconditional reload of web page (bypass cache)

Kinda sounds like you need to see if your version is the most current.

I've checked my Opera and it is the latest version. I've even re-downloaded and re-installed it but the problem is still there :(

Yikes! Well it sounds like they do this test every Thursday. Maybe there will be another update soon that will fix it.

I did a search on Opera's forum for "download changed to pdf" and it didn't really bring up anything useful. Maybe I'm asking the wrong question. Maybe you could post the question there & see if you get useful information.

That's a good idea. Thank you.

I also added "Opera" to your subject line or you can mine. Hopefully just that little bit of additional information will bring someone by who knows what/how to fix this.

I did some digging and this is what I found, though it might be different since you're on Mac (never used one myself)....

Open Opera, click the Opera tab in top left, scroll down to Settings>>Preferences....a new window will open, click the Advanced tab.....there should be a list down the left side, click Downloads it'll pop up a screen with MIME types, scroll down to "application/pdf..............pdf" click it then hit Edit and check the box in front of "save to disk"  (or you can select for it to "use plug in": Adobe Acrobat so it will open directly with Adobe then you can save it there) click ok, close the windows and try to download something.

This is getting interesting. I actually can't find an application/pdf option.

ah..... then click the "add" button and copy paste this:

Under MIME type:

Code: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
application/pdf

Under File extensions:

Code: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
pdf

*You can also select in this box to "save to disk",  or "open with application"

Also, you might want to check and see if you have a plug in for Adobe Acrobat

You guys are completely awesome!

The problem had to do with the MIME types after all. I added application/pdf but that didn't work. but I noticed that it was reading application/octet-stream as pdf.

After a quick google search, I found that application/octet-stream is not supposed to have any extension saved to it. A quick edit and problem solved!
