which reader?
« on: October 16, 2013, 06:07 AM »
I'm at the hospital with my daughter who has hodgkin's lymphoma (cancer of the lymph nodes) and my kindle 3 is dying. I could use an opinion on going with a kindle paperwhite, or other eink device such as kobo. Are there any negatives that anyone knows about? Thanks in advance for the advice.

To learn more about my daughter's cancer here's a link explaining.

About the ereader.
Well it depends on your preference and how you will use it.
Kindle paperwhite is really a best device but Kobo and Nook both have good devices too.
It also depends on what format you prefer to read your ebook.
kobo and nook both support epub, but doesn't work with mobi or azw3 files.
while kindle works mobi and azw3 files but not the epub.

And about your daughter i hope she gets better.
Prayer and wishes from my side :)

I use calibre to convert to whichever format is needed. I'm wondering does anyone know if the paperwhite has the battery life of the plain kindles, or as far as that goes do any of the others such as the nook. Since we tend to do a lot of long days at the hospital I'm looking for something that can go for a minimum of 8hrs no problem without a charge. Also can the paperwhite's backlight be shut off, sometimes the light bothers my eyes.

Thanks for the prayers :) So far she is responding well to treatment.

SOO so sorry to hear about your daughter's diagnosis! It's good to know she is responding well to treatments.

Regarding the question in your OP - PERSONALLY, I'd stick with Kindle. First, I absolutely LOVE the kindle and Amazon, and have been so happy with the way Amazon has handled returns and exchanges for my family of a dozen or so Kindles (my mom, my MIL, my aunt, three of my sisters, several friends, kids of family and friends, etc.)... the other reason is because all the accessories you have (cords/plugs etc), should work with your new Kindle too; I have no ideas about other ereader plugs and cords. Also, you've probably already got quite a few books through Amazon, and it's going to be simple to transfer to a new Kindle - and simple is good, espeically when you have other more important distractions!

If I needed a new Kindle right now (my Kimy, a Kindle 3, is still working just fine thank you!), I'd probably buy a used on on  eBay because the current Kindle and Kindle Paperwhite don't appear to have 3G! If I couldn't do that for a reasonable price, then I would buy the Paperwhite.

Regarding battery life - Amazon rates the battery life on the Paperwhite as TWICE that of the regular Kindle (You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login) at eight weeks! Having touch screen would be very nice too! But, if money is an issue, then I think you'd be perfectly happy with the standard Kindle at just $69 retail! I have a friend with the Paperwhite and she LOVES it.
It's not a long life that matters, but a deep one. ~Susan Sarandon.

Thanks I appreciate the input. The one thing I can't find is if the backlight on the paperwhite can be turned off so it looks and reads like the old one. Anyone happen to know or have one they can test this with?

Thanks again and Des (daughter) said thanks for the well wishes
