City of Lost Souls - Cassandra Clare

City of Lost Souls - Cassandra Clare 3.5/5 stars

I have to admit I don't have a very high expectation when it comes to books. As long as it engages me, it's a good book. And I don't even have a clue what engages me. The Hunger Games didn't engage me, oddly. But since this series has come to its fifth book, I wouldn't pick it up if I hadn't been engaged in this story, right? So I assume that if you have been following up Jace and Clary closely, you would want to pick this up.

Basically, Jace and Sebastian are now linked. You stab Jace, Sebastian bleeds, and vice versa. Jace and Sebastian have become best buddys too (Jace is kind of brainwashed), though Jace hasn't changed his love for Clary, and asks Clary to join them, to carry out whatever evil plan Sebastian has. Clary decides to go for it, and finds a way to sever Jace and Sebastian's bond.

I say the plot is not bad! It surprised me on a few occasions and I CAN'T BELIEVE what Clary did what she did at some point in the story. I actually gasped and cried "OH MY GOD OH MY GOD" when I read that. I wish I could tell you right now what she did but I don't want to spoil it for you.
Something else totally intrigued me. After I read the story I am DESPERATE to understand Sebestian more! I can't tell you how much I want to know more of him, though he's definitely a bastard. I want to know how he actually feels about Jace and Clary, even if the feelings are negative? Does he hate them? Like hate them and want to kill them? Jealous? Or what? 'Cause after reading this, I can't even tell!

I hope you guys enjoy it. And I can't wait to read The Clockwork Princess ;) And tell me what you think after you read it!

I just finished the book. I have LOVED this series so far so I hate to say that this book actually let me down. I do like where the story went (eventually) but I think it was missing plot during a lot of the book and even the usual witty dialogue was scarce. I hope she's got something amazing for the final book in the series, and I am hoping I will sill love Clockwork Princess because I am really looking forward to that one too.

I know. A lot of people say the story just gets worse. But it's been so long I don't even remember how good the story was at the beginning.
Any thoughts on Sebastian though? Why didn't he kill Clary?

Yeah I'm not sure with Sebastian.. I think he thought he could really bring her over to his side (and for a while I think he was doing a pretty good job at that) I think he is super creepy though that he still tried kissing her and making comments about how she acts in bed and stuff.... WEIRD....

I just wish there would have been more actual story instead of "this is how Maia and Jordan hook up.... this is how Clary and evil Jace hook up... this is how Alec and Magnus hook up.... this is how Simon and Isabelle hook up....." I guess I'm not as invested in the love lines.

I agree with you Hawshy with the hook ups, it felt for like a filler book than a book to a series.   Overall I think that book was okay.  To bad we have to wait till 2014 for the sixth book, BLAH

I know! That is too long in between books. Hopefully she makes it excellent with the extra year to work on it. I hope I'm not let down when Clockwork Princess is released.

LOL Sebastian has a quality that makes people believe that he has emotions but he actually hasn't. I learned this from book 2 and Clare has said that for the millionth times in her FAQ page. BUT I AM STILL NAIVE ENOUGH TO WANT TO BELIEVE HIM WHEN HE ACTS LIKE HE CARES IN BOOK 5. What the heck.

I totally agree with what you said about the hook up parts. Speaking of Magus and Alec. Sighhhhhhhh

Like you, I was fooled by Sebastian. I thought he cares about Clary... well, HE CARES FOR HER IN THAT INCEST WAY! OR SHOULD I SAY IN A "IM A "PEOPLE USER" WAY!

I dont care about the hook up parts. Maia and Jordan - they are inevitable. I figured that out since Kyle/Jordan show up on COFA. And I'm a Simabelle fan. So definitely, their getting together, patching up, getting over the past was a good sign for me.

Anyways, this book had answered my question about Clare's making another trilogy for TMI. You see, I was the one of the folks raising their eyebrows and blurting out, "why the hell there's a fourth book and another trilogy will be made?" You can't blame for acting like that, because TMI has been made one of my favorites, after Hunger Games put me into a catatonic induced state at the end of Mockingjay. And i thought, it wil ruin everything. I was hesistant to read COFA then but I've heard Simon's role will be expand and that pushed me to read it. To end this quickly, COLS justified everything else. Making another trilogy is worth it because Sebastian isn't over and the problem within the Clave wasn't over at the 3rd book of the 1st TMI trilogy.

It's really amazing how Cassandra Clare pull all these together... she's writing with the speed of lighting. I'm eagerly waiting for Dark Artifices.

I hope Emma is not whiny. I am not a huge fan of Tessa or Clary. I like Isabelle though. Why can't someone like Isabelle be the main character?
I do like the Simon/Isabelle part too *handshake*

Hmm. I am not really disturbed by Sebastian's "incestuous" acts. Some people might find Jace and Clary disturbing too, as in "Ew, Jace is her adopted brother!" In an old-fashioned way it is incest too. So it's all about perspectives. I don't see Sebastian as Clary's brother. They didn't grow up together, not that it changes their blood relation, but it does change the dynamics between them. If Sebastian was a really nice guy and Clary had feelings for him, I wouldn't be repulsed. I am a strong believer of "Love conquers all" (Silly, I know).

However, I think Sebastian only did what he did to Clary (kisses and stuff) to prove a point: "YOU ARE UNDER MY CONTROL I WILL DO WHAT IT TAKES TO MAKE YOU SUBMIT". But then, who am I to think I understand Sebastian LOL?

Another Simabelle fan! Thank God! In goodreads all discussions lead to Jace and Im getting tired of him because i like the vampire Simon. About Sebastian, after being revived by Lilith, his desire for power and violence had escalated. Although, me being me, i just love the wronged and suffering guy. The one who was unloved and went down the harsh path. So I cant help thinking (definitely i was fooled), maybe he can still change. Whatever, he's the perfect villain, more than Valentine himself. So it wont hurt if my fantasies about how all of these should end wont transpire. I still love Clare.

Oh my god I was going to say that! I was going to say Sebastian being the big bad guy is more interesting than Valentine! High five!

I think Simon is really funny. Especially the vampire Simon, 'cause now he's not intimidated easily, so he's becoming even more sarcastic and funny. Haha.

Yes, Sebastiain, his really deep, intriguing, cunning and powerful. For me, he's the kind of villain I will fall for. The kind of evil character that I both love and hate to read. (Just like "the Mayor" in Chaos Walking Trilogy)so I liked him much better than Valentine. I dont even give a damn about Valentine on first 3 books other than when will he die and fail.

Simon is really funny. And i think becoming a vampire made him more interesting. For me, its a great thing he ended (will) with Isabelle. They make a great couple. (insert fangirl scream).

Am I the only one who liked Clary in this book? I get that every one likes Isabelle (she's my fave too) and Simon, ofcourse. But I have been eager to see Clary kick some serious demon-butt since CoB and she really did it here. Isabelle, Simon and Clary (and maybe a little of Sebastian) made me LOVE this book.

I do like Clary... even in the first three books, she didn't kick ass much there but hey she's just so powerful creating those runes, and she's the one who beat Valentine REMEMBER THAT!!! and by the way in COFA she did kick demon butt in the church right when Isabelle found her... no comment on Sebastian ----  :-X

I actually kind of liked Sebastian in the middle part of the book.  ^-^ Where he's so kind and all to Clary and Jace. I actually believed that he has that kind of kindness and gentleness. He's like a child who wants to gain Jace and Clary's attention and probably his mother, too. But, the incest thing is not good. Yes, I've read incest mangas and it's actually okay with me. But I think what I really didn't like in his attempt is pushing himself towards Clary. Uh, you know, without consent of Clary. anyway, I want to believe in Diane65 regarding the spoiler. :3

I love reading the speculations you guys said. And oh, I love Simon in this book! He's actually A LOT MORE sarcastic in this book! :3 I loved it!

P.S.
