Fifty Shades of Painful Reading Experience
« on: April 21, 2012, 09:33 PM »
I just finished the first book of the 'Fifty Shades of Gray' trilogy (barely) and I can't say I'll be picking up the second or third. Ever.
I saw all the hype on tv about it, searched it up on Amazon, and ignored the hundreds of 'one star reviews.'
I should have listened.
I've never hated a book before, just majorly disliked, but this? This one did it.
I felt like I was trapped in a hole that just kept getting deeper and impossible to climb.
I reaiized by the third chapter that things weren't going to get better.
The heroine made me want to weep in denial that I was reading about her 'Inner Goddess' and the hero made me want to call the Secret Service for stalking and just being creepy.
Creeping isn't romantic.
The vocabulary and grammar were gut wrenching, and the unrealistic plot (sexy billionaire, not millionaire, but billionaire with a BDSM fetish and 21 year old virgin whose never masturbated, but orgasms at the drop of a hat) was embarrassing to read about.
This was apparently considered 'shocking erotica' by the Today Show...I've read more shocking erotica with a Captain Underpants Flip-O-Rama comic.
Basically, the only thing I can think of is WHY? Why did this lady write this book? What possessed her to turn a Twilight fanfiction into a published novel?
Author, lady, whatever your name is...don't quit your day job.
If my life was a Supernatural episode, all conflict would be resolved with food and Dean Winchester.

Yes it's Nole - Novak :)
And I agree with you. I'm surprised how many fanfic stories have been published lately.

Are you from Serbia by any chance?  :)

I thought I was the only one who could not get through the books, I just don't get the hype of this book but then I thought Twilight was also terrible. Fifty should have stopped at Book 1. I have read far better superior BDSM. I think Sylvia Day's new book blows the fifty trilogy away.

I am so glad that I read through this thread. I have friends who have bought into this nonsense. She was also on the verge of convincing me to read this "hype" of a series. But I thought I was the only one who thought that Twilight was actually dreadful writing. People go on and on about how it's the most amazing series they have ever read and I frankly would like to shoot myself each time that is said. It saddens me that there are hundreds of series out there that surpass Twilight and from what I hear the Fifty Shades series...and these authors don't even come close to the popularity of these poorly written novels. I think I will stray away from this series and stick to my NOT ALLOWED with a plot and books with actual meaning over the teenage hyped up frenzies. What is America coming to? We are the ones who make stories like this "Best Selling". Makes you wonder the education level of our society and the ability to comprehend true words and meanings.

I read that they are saying these books are the "new" 9 1/2 weeks *snorts* Uh yeah, I don't think. Horrible writing... as I said before, not sure why who was on some stupid drug to give her 5 million for them *shakes head*

HAha...apparently we need to petition that. There is no way garbage like this stuff deserves that. I mean good job for her for getting it published and all, but seriously? Some need to re-read their writing 5-10 times before it can get to publish level...It sounds like this was not even edited.

I agree. the author got her books such public recognition, the books themselves are horrible (lousy idea, weak heroine and dont get me started on the so called hero who is anything but. poorly written and edited, gives the wrong ideas about intimacy etc.)

50 shades trilogy is the same as the Twilight books for me: They made money and news  but aren't worth  even the first read.

Heh,  I've never read (nor do I desire to read) any of the 50 Shades books but I do like the Beauty Trilogy by Anne Rice. Check it out if you're interested in erotica (book pronz). It's pretty good.

Lol, it was a great fanfic in my opinion. It updated frequently; it's a fantasy for most females - finding your very rich Prince Charming without having to kiss many frogs, who happens to be not boring. So it worked in fanfiction land because we're not particularly too picky (sometimes) there. But unfortunately it got published, and worse, not much was changed from the "original" which isn't right in my opinion.
But with that said I can't help but be happy for her because she was just like a lot of people writing as a fun hobby and now she's famous and rich for it. No one would have turned that down. And look at the Twilight Saga itself, it's not great reading material itself with an author who never wrote a thing before it and now she's just as famous and rich.

The problem isn't them (Stephenie Meyer and EL James) but us as a society because we're the ones making them rich and famous. Just saying.

@Faaye:

I agree with you, I read the book mainly because I saw an interview of Ian Somerhalder with Ryan Seacrest that maybe Ian will be the dom in the book as the book will be made a film and I'm a fan of Ian..but did not finished the book because the whole vocabulary used in the book was too shallow..

oh btw here is the link of the interview:

Just read this article online regarding Shades of Grey :sign0137: :33:

With rights to the book optioned by Universal and Focus Features, rumors now source that Ian Somerhalder of “Vampire Diaries” and Alexander Skarsgard of “True Blood” fame may play the part of Christian Grey.

In Ryan Seacrest’s recent news interview with Ian Somerhalder, the actor said upon being asked about taking the role if asked, “I absolutely would be up for it. It could be very, very amazing.”

Somerhalder may have competition for the role, though—Alexander Skarsgard in an Access Hollywood interview confirmed he’d be “perfect” for the part of the suave Grey.

Amanda Seyfried of “Mean Girls” and “Dear John” have been mentioned by the media as a possible star for the role of Anastasia. Lucy Hale’s name of “Pretty Little Liars” has also been thrown into the mix.

Who would you choose to play Ana and Christian in the movie roles for “Fifty Shades of Grey”?
NO NOOOO.
NOT LUCY AND IAN TOO.
I swear everyone's been brainwashed by this crap.

I never pictured Prince Charming as a sadistic that enjoys stalking his prey before jumping in to tie her up and screw her brains out.

It has resulted in the best Coming Out line every.

My friend  said during lunch:

"If that is what women read, it's no wonder I'm gay"

I almost choked to death on my sandwich.

Totally agree with the most of you in that this book is definitely OVERRATED. I saw all this media coverage on the book and decided to check it out at the library and i'm so glad I did mainly because I didn't have to PAY to read this book. There were just so many things wrong with this book and the characters. Maybe it's just me but I don't like the plot of this heroine having to save a damaged man from his past. This is supposed to be a modern day book and this just doesn't happen. Plus, the whole thing about the heroine having an inner goddess and stuff... Maybe it's just me but this side of her totally creeped me out. Like, clearly she needed as much psychological help as him (which is probably why she connected so well with the guy's doctor lol). I have yet to pick up the second book of the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy.

Happy reading!  :-*

Do yourself and your sanity a favor and do NOT pick up the second book. Emphasis on the not. I heard it doesn't get any better.

I liked parts of the trilogy, for the rest of it I found her whiny. She just keeps whining about the same stuff.

I don't think the overall idea of the series was bad, but I did think that making the story into three books was ridiculous. Making the book into a trilogy just made the overall story tedious and hard to finish. Just one book would've been great.
