Review: PulseOf Heroes by AJSweeny
« on: September 13, 2011, 02:13 PM »
Name of the book: Pulse of Heroes
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Rating (out of 5): 1? 2?

My review:

This book has tons of good reviews on GR, but this has just not been for me. Usually atleast 80% of the time my taste in books match about majority of people and this has been one off. This book threatened to grow my DNF pile to 4, I almost gave up a couple of times. Anyway let me try and explain my 2 stars.

- Sometimes (no make that most of the times), dialogs were mixed into sentences and it was hard to understand if they were talking or thinking. For example (not actual sentence from book): If sentence says: "Michelle wondered if that was true". You'd think she was thinking in her head that, but no she had actually said it but it was not written in dialog. I only got to understand that when Elliot (the hero) answers her "wodering".

- The story was written in third person. Normally I don't have problem (infact I prefer them that way), but this book lost it's focus b'coz of that. Author went from one person's POV to anothers so fast, it left me disoriented. It was hard to tell whose POV are we reading about at any given point.

- Story and plot was okay despite too much melodrama. It was interesting enough read, once you get over the first half of the book. Second half has nice action and story finally started going somewhere even if it was predeictable. I came close to leaving this book in DNF pile and move on, but I don't like leaving the book without any closure, so I stuck it out.

- Story doesn't pick up until last 100 or so pages and it felt like such a drag.

- More information about Elliot's power and Michelle's connection to him would have been better in helping reader's understanding. The whole mysterious hero running hot and cold is getting a bit cliched and old, would have prefered some build up in relationship.

- One thing this book had in common with HoN and Sookie series is, many guys vying after the MC's love. One minute Michelle (MC) is all "I can't live without you" "Don't leave me" blah blah blah and the next page, she is attracted to / drawn to every other guy. I kid you not...she had atleast 5 or 6 guys she was interested in (even after declaring her eternal love to Elliot). Atleast in HoN and Sookie series there were that many guys in all 7 or 8 books put together not in just one book. How are we supposed to like and respect the MC?

- MC in this book is one fickle minded person I've read about in a long time. MC is introduced to us with "good girl" act down pat (she tells her parents everything, follows rules and all that) and then she does random things like jumping walls, it doesn't quite go with the image you've got built in your head. One minute she is "in love" with Elliot and the next she is having feelings for a guy who attempted to hold her down and rape her? This was just disturbing on so many levels.

- If you thought Edward and Bella story was creepy b'coz Edward was old enough to be Bella's Grandpa, then you probably won't want to consider Michelle and Elliot's story. Because Elliot is not only 5000 years old, he actually has many many kids and a freaking grandkid . This made my shudder...ick can't imagine making out with someone's grandpa *shudders* creepy. Did I mention his grandkid is 50 year old?

To end this review on a positive note:
- Author did NOT beautify the immortality. She didn't hesitate to open any cans of worms from Elliot's past. His past relationships, heartbreaks etc. Though this point worked as a negative for me, I am sure there are people out there that might like it this way.

Thanks Jessa. If you ever do get desperate and read it, do yourself a favor and skip review part in GR. Its like getting stalked by the fangirls. If I were any less stubborn, I'd have taken down my review by now. As it stands, I've had to remove rude comments everyother day (thank God for delete button on GR).

God!
I've just read your review LIB, and I have to say, so long and thanks for the fish... I don't think I have to worry about getting desperate enough to touch this book.
Thanks for the heads up.

On a side note, those fangirls are ready for a psych evaluation if they liked this sort of book so much to stalk/insult you over it. People are beyond insane these days...

I did actually came pretty close to telling someone the same thing (about getting psych eval) when she said that she liked the villan (abuser) guy b'coz his almost rape attempt was somehow justified by storyline (which is to get a revenge on hero). I told her there was no reason good enough for a rape attempt let alone a revenge and she wasn't happy about that. Ugh...now I stopped responding and just delete all comments.

You've mentioned this in some other post, I think. And I was horrified then, as I am now, just thinking about the girl who could actually like that kind of person. Even if it is just a fictional character. I think world has grown to be a pretty messed up place,  when that kind of abuse is considered normal and to be brushed off as nothing serious.
But eh, point is, don't let yourself be bothered by them. They were clearly deeply disturbed.

Yes, to each their own and if a couple of girls wanna go all "psycho[/]" just because they didn't like your review that's their problem, not yours. They obviously need to realize that no matter how many people like or don't like something that there's always gonna be people who think the opposite and it's only the strong and brave ones that stand up and admit that they think differently than the majority. Sorry, not trying to get all "sappy", I just believe in always standing up for what you believe it, no matter how hard it is or who stands on the other side. :)

Thanks Jessa...I feel the same. That's why I didn't take it down no matter what. I just delete their comments if they annoy me too much. Unfortunately I have to do this every other day. I used to dis-like this book, but now I just hate it and don't want anything to do with it.
