Book: Mr. Perfect by Linda Howard
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Published : July 29th 2003
Rating: 2.75
Synopsis -
What would make the perfect man?

That's the delicious topic heating up the proceedings at a certain table of professional women at their favorite restaurant, Ernie's, tonight: Mr. Perfect. What qualities would he have? Would he be tall, dark, and handsome? Caring and warmhearted -- or will just muscular do? Jaine Bright and her three girlfriends start off with the basics -- he'd be faithful and reliable, the responsible type, with a great sense of humor.

But as the conversation picks up momentum, so do the quartet's requirements for Mr. Perfect -- and they write down a tongue-in-cheek checklist that's both funny and racy. The next thing they know, the List, as it has come to be called, spreads like wildfire throughout their company and sizzles along e-mail lines. And it doesn't stop there: the List becomes an overnight sensation, grabbing the interest of local newspapers and television coverage. No one expected this avalanche of attention for something that began as a joke among friends. And the joke turns deadly serious when one of the four women is murdered...

The prime suspect in the case is the victim's boyfriend, who was one of a number of men who found the List sexist and offensive. But an impenetrable alibi gets him off the hook. Now, with the help of Jaine's neighbor, an unpredictable police detective, the puzzle must be solved -- and time is running out as a deadly stalker targets the three remaining friends. Now, knowing whom to trust and whom to love is a matter of survival -- as the dream of Mr. Perfect becomes a chilling nightmare.

My Review:

2.75 stars

In the beginning of the book I was tempted to give it 1.5 stars - it was excruciatingly slow and I couldnt help groaning as Ms. Howard went on and on about mundane, irrelevant, BORING facts for about 150 pages. I really didnt need to know about what she Jaine going to wear, about her lawn mower, grass cutting...it gives a new meaning to "as boring as grass".

The characters too, in these pages were so irritating. Women's fiction - and you cant like the MC? :O I was sorely tempted to abandon it! But then things picked up...

So 4 girl friends meet up at a bar after work and write a hilarious (not so much) list of what they look for a man...faithfulness, dependability, yada yada yada...should have 10 inches. Been there, done that.
This last criterion makes them infamous. Really? High school girls write better lists, and here these women get ABC, Good Morning America!, become an internet viral...it was just not believable.

Ms. Howard kills of characters you like - I've learnt that lesson before but... *sigh*

We know the killer from the first page, but he/she is still CREEPY.

Then there is the hotter than hot, Tall, Dark and Handsome cop boyfriend, Sam Donovan,
her neighbour who she thought was a mean, nasty drunk in the first part of the book - that was funny, but not much. Their chemistry is goooood and this is where the "sensual" part of the book plays out.

The latter half of the book was well paced, intriguing and pretty interesting and almost makes you forget the sheer torture of the first half.

The book is not electrifying, or a page turner as it claims, but Linda Howard fans may just like it. :)
