Name of the book: Thoughtless by S.C. Stephens

Genre: Adult, romance

Book publish year: August, 2009

Rating (out of 5): 5

Brief intro (optional): From GoodReads-

For almost two years now, Kiera's boyfriend, Denny, has been everything she's ever wanted: loving, tender and endlessly devoted to her. When they head off to a new city to start their lives together, Denny at his dream job and Kiera at a top-notch university, everything seems perfect. Then an unforeseen obligation forces the happy couple apart.

Feeling lonely, confused, and in need of comfort, Kiera turns to an unexpected source – a local rock star named Kellan Kyle. At first, he's purely a friend that she can lean on, but as her loneliness grows, so does their relationship. And then one night everything changes...and none of them will ever be the same.

My review:

Thoughtless was a superb read. It drew me in right away and held my interest the entire length of the book! S.C. Stephens really knows how to write a fascinating read. The characters were, for the most part, deep and complex and the story itself is easily relatable to real life. The main character, Keira, is faced with choosing between two men: her boyfriend of 2 years, Denny, who is loving and "safe" and Kellan, their new roommate and Denny's friend, who is a hot singer in a small band and captures her interest from the start. While I didn't like the fact that Keira just couldn't seem to make up her mind and kept stringing both men along, the love and passion in this book was at times overwhelming and kept me reading (way too long) into the night.

This book has several "adult" scenes in it, not recommended for younger readers, which I usually try to shy away from in books but were such an integral part of the story that without them the book wouldn't have been nearly as intriguing.

I have just started the second book, Effortless, and it seems to be as appealing and well written as the first. Stephens is truly a phenomenal author and I look forward to reading many more books written by her in the future!

I would recommend this book to anyone over 17.

Hey, I'll just add in my two cents here, if that's okay.

I didn't even know what angst was when I picked this book up. But now that I've finished it, I know EXACTLY what angst is. This was such a heart-wrenching book and it made me think and think and think. There is just so much to this book.

Kiera tells the story in the first person. Kiera is not a very likeable character, but she's very real. She's academically smart, but I guess that's where all the brain cells went. Throughout the book I wanted to shout, "You idiot!" But then at other times, I was capitulating, mumbling, "Okay, I might've done that too."

Denny is Kiera's Australian boyfriend. He's sweet, caring, and thinks Kiera is the most fantastic girl in the whole world. They are both crazy in love with each other and their relationship is strong so they move house together because of Denny's job. They move to Seattle to house with Kellan, one of Denny's friends, who is, "possibly the most handsome man in the Northern Hemisphere", or something like that. So, trouble is afoot when Denny ships out of town for his job, leaving Kiera and Kellan to themselves....oh oh.

I have never described a character as "sexy" but if anyone deserves that adjective, it's Kellan Kyle. This guy is such a complex character. He's insecure, but hides it well behind his good looks and his womanizing. I love how he's so gentle with Kiera, and not in an annoying Prince Charming way but in a way I expect a guy to be gentle. A little bashful, a little anxious. Sooo, cute. The next best thing about Kellan was that he had come to accept his past. He could tell it straight, and he cut out the sob story, the I'm-so-hurt-still-waah. Kellan was the best part of the story. His pain, his attitude, his humour. He was such a great character.

This is the kind of book that I would read again. There is just so much to it, it's like you have to read it twice to get it all in. Ahhh, what a great book.
