Review of "Hotshot" by Julie Garwood
« Reply #221 on: August 20, 2013, 01:33 PM »
Hotshot by Julie Garwood  :star: :star: :star:

I liked it. It was better than the two previous ones, "The ideal man" and "Sweet Talk", which I found a little too formulaic. And definitely a lot better than "Sizzle".

There are a lot of things going on, the characters are well defined, a couple of secondary characters really interesting, the main plot is ok if not original, and -best of all- you can catch glimpses of the old and great Garwood style of writing (which we old fans were missing for a long time!).

Overall, a nice read.

Review of "Seduction and Snacks" by Tara Sivec

Seduction and Snacks, by Tara Sivec   :star: :star: :star: &1/2
 :D

I read this book based on a recommendation on Goodreads, since I was of a mind to read some funny romance, and I have to say it was a pretty good recommendation.  Not really because of the plot, since it is really nothing new, but because of how it is written.

The writer offers a window to the free associating mind of the two main characters, all the characters are solid, vivid and very well defined. And it is so incredibly hilarious you cannot possibly read it in the train. You cant's stop laughing, really, it is insane!

Why not more than 3 1/2 stars? Well, the story is old, and the end is a little anticlimatic. But I really really had a great time reading this, and no doubt will go back to re-read some incredibly funny passages.

See you!
Val

A Game of thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire #1) by George R.R. Martin  :star: :star: :star: :star:

Loved it, anyone how loves books like Outlander and Pillars of the Earth meaning BIG books that have a lot of characters several side stories a lot of details and things happening all over the place  will love this book, but I will note that I didn't feel like i was reading a Fantasy it felt more like Historical fiction but, i have a feeling that the setting and the world will change in the coming books and judging by the end of the 1st one i think that is the case.

Burn (Breathless #3) by Maya Banks  :star:

I'm beginning to wonder if it's me, the series or Maya banks but i'm not giving up on Maya Banks she is one of the 1st romance authors i read and i love her, so i'm going to say that the series just didn't do anything for me and maybe i wasn't in the mood for a romance or maybe it was erotica  :sign0085:, 3 books with the same plot the same male and female characters, the same sex  :sign0023: there is so much of the same a person can take, these books are 70% sex and 20% character and plot space and the other 10% is just filling, empty space.

Warm Bodies (Warm Bodies #1) by Isaac Marion   :star: :star: :star:

This is the 1st Zombie i readand i think it will be the last, not because the book is not good but, mainly because i'm not a zombie fan, surprisingly for me this book was good, it is written from the zombie "R" POV and it ws fun to see things from his prespective since he is a very original zombie  the book has some fun moments and some deep emotional moments.

The New Hunger (Warm Bodies #0.5)  by Isaac Marion  :star: :star: :star: :star:

This is a short story told from several POVs it was very good, it was nice to get that brief look into the characters past and how they managed to get where there were but, also very sad.

Review of Bullet Catchers series (1-3) by Roxanne St. Claire

Review of Bullet Catchers series (1-3)
by Roxanne St. Claire

Kill Me Twice (Bullet Catcher, #1)
by Roxanne St. Claire
The plot is ok, even when I found everything a little artificial and stereotypical.
But, please? "The best bodyguards"???
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

Thrill Me to Death (Bullet Catcher, #2)
by Roxanne St. Claire
Again, the plot is ok, interesting mystery/whodunit.
Cory is a likable character, but kind not really defined. Max is the archetypal strong silent extra-cool poker-faced (literally in this case) emotions-are-a-no-no alpha hot guy. If you like the type, ok then.
But then, again with the "I am the best bodyguard ever" and then he turns out he is not.
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.
???
It was the same on the first book of the series, but in this one this trait takes a new dimension.

Take Me Tonight (Bullet Catcher, #3)
by Roxanne St. Claire
Well, I liked this one.
The characters are alive and act within what is logical according to their psychology (mostly). The plot is credible and pretty well written. Much better than the previous one!

First You Run (Bullet Catcher, #4)
by Roxanne St. Claire

Much better than the 2 first books. The mystery is exotic but good, and the story flows pretty nicely. The characters are much more solid than the previous books too.
There is a couple of times when the bodyguard in question fails to perform up to the supposedly high Bullet Catchers standards...but fortunately are few and they are somewhat rationalized and chalked it up to Adrien's "impetuosity"
Overall, I liked it.

I enjoyed the book very much and maybe because it's the last in the series that made the experience sweeter, it was good going back to Fortnums and the whole crew.

Started reading the Outlander books thanks to the tv show, and I must confess, I expected more. I actually stopped reading the second book and that is something that I've never done before. The first book was ok, but I lost all interest after a while.

The books just are not my style, IMO she makes Jaime way too awesome, she uses way too much description (how many times does she mention that Jaime is a red-head in the first book?) and the plot bored me (of course this is all personal opinion).
What really killed the books for me was the descriptions, I don't know why, but I don't enjoy descriptions that much, I have no problem when they are used to describe important things or if they help with the world-building, but I can't stand books that describe everything, like "we sat by the fountain and then I moved my hand a little to the left and my friend tossed her hair and looked to her right and blablabla..."

Is a bit troublesome because fantasy is one of my favorites genres, and plenty of books have that same problem.

I do have one question for the Outlander fans: a lot of fans seem to hate Claire's husband (Frank), and maybe is because I haven't read the whole story, but I just don't understand why. I know Claire/Jaime are the main couple and the big romance, but is Frank really so bad? All I know about him is that he was in the secret service during WWII, after the war ended tried to reconnect with his wife, looked everywhere for her after she dissapeared, and when she came back pregnant with other man's baby he raised that baby. I'd really like if someone could explain why he is so hated apart from the whole "he is an obstacle for Claire/Jaime".

I 'm a fan of the Outlander series I've read the books and I'm watching the series and I'm loving it, AND YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT  about DG tendency to over describe everything sometimes when i'm reading I want to scream " okay i get it :D " but other than that I really enjoyed the books, I like the characters and how the story evolved, to answer your question about Frank, for myself I don't hate him IMO he got dealt the worst hand in the game and he suffered right along with them.

I been making my way through the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher currently I'm reading book #11 Turn coat It's been a good series enjoyable some books more than others but still good.

Thanks for the reply, glad to know I'm not the only one who thinks DG likes description way too much, as I said, I got sick of reading how red Jaime's hair is, everytime he shows up there is a mention of his hair. It got old really soon.

And thanks for answering about Frank, I've seen many Outlander fans who hate Frank, so I wondered if maybe he did something later in the books that showed he was a terrible person, because all I could feel for Frank when I stopped reading was pity; I mean, the guy spends years away from his wife fighting in the war, goes on vacation to reconnect with her, she disappears, and later comes back pregnant with another's man daughter and yet he raised that girl like she was his own. I assumed later books revealed more things about him that explained the hate, but it looks like all he did was marry Claire before she was sent back in time and met Jaime, which is not really a reason to hate him IMO.

I want to tell to try reading the books again but then I'll be too much like a die-hard fan trying to get you into the fold  :D , if you can get over all the unnecessary descriptions I think you will enjoy it, if you like historical romance with a heavy dose of politics and some humor this series is good, of course not all the books are on the same par but that goes with every series out there.
With Frank I agree, what he did was amazing, in later books when we get to know more about him and Claire you can sense a level of bitterness and anger between them and how the years they spent together weren't happy though I guess that is expected but I agree with on the point that his mere existence was reason enough for some fans to hate him

Name of the book: Blood, Body and Mind (Aaron's Kiss, #1)
Author: Kathi S. Barton
Genre: Paranormal
Rating (out of 5):5 :star:
Your review:
This the beginning of an amazing series.

It starts with Melody, queen of Magic who meets sassy, street-smart Sara at 11 with great magic as she has a training session with Mel's guard, Marcus.Sara is invited to Molavonta, kingdom of magic where she trains as a guard for Mel.

Next we meet hot and hunky Aaron Macmanus challenges the master vampire of the realm, Carlos Sanchez - as he abuses those under his care. Aaron and his friend and care taker begins their adventure together once Aaron kills Carlos.

Many things have happened in the time since Sara was taken to Mel's kingdom. After meeting Aaron under a disturbing circumstances, she passes out with a request to Aaron. But Aaron discover Sara is his mate and that he can not fulfill this request...

What follows is an amazing story of magic, love and how love can overcome tragedy from the pass and be stronger.

Kathi S. Barton, won my heart with this single book and I couldn't wait for the next chapter in this amazing series.

-----
This is the first time I review on here - I usually review on Amazon and GR. Hope this is okay?
