I actually like book that explain things.
I saw years ago this cartoon, The Magic School Bus (doesn't run in France), and I loved it. I thought it was very well explained for children, and very easy to understand, not boring at all. I discovered they made them in books so last year I bought three that I thought my nephew would like, because he's really curious about everything (and argumentative, too, more often that not, he's arguing like an adult although he'll be nine on Friday...  ???) but he really didn't like them. I didn't get it, so I read them and they were.... huh... absolutely not great, lots of shortcuts, insipid, etc.
I was so disappointed !  :(

Everyone is different.

I got the great nephew a bunch of classics I can live without.  He loved them.

My oldest loved watching The Magic School Bus, he also loved to watch Kratts Creatures. He learned a lot from both those shows, now all we have on tv is shows that teach our kids how to be rude to thier parents. They need to bring those shows back. We had a few of the MSB books but they aren't the same as the show.

Rumpelstiltskin was one of my favourite stories growing up. I also remember Harold and the purple crayon.
My kids always got a kick out of CHICKA CHICKA BOOM BOOM, it was a fun book to read.

I liked Rumpelstilskin too but I liked SnowWhite better because she could talk to animals !  :P
I don't know the other ones, they didn't cross the ocean. The only reason I know about the MSB is that I was an au pair in Canada in 1998 and the youngest boy was watching it (and explaining to me at the same time in case I didn't get it !  ^-^).  It only came to France I'd say about 4 years ago. Tops.
My nephew also used to like Dora when he was around 3 or so, and here she's teaching kids english. But I never really liked it.   :-\

The book became a huge hit among children's musicians. Fred Penner did a version, you can listen to it here.
