I must say that I am, in fact, a total cover snob and have bought many books that pretty much sucked based on the fact that the cover drew me in, and I have probably missed out on just as many great books because I hated the covers. *bows head in shame*
Actually most covers are getting much better these days, if you look at some of the covers from like 2005, for example I went back and reread the a couple of series' and the first covers are horrible, especially compared to reprints and the later books.
This is to funny. I just realized I'm a complete cover snob hehe. A few of my reading buddies keep telling me to read Christine Feehan's novels but I just can't bring myself to do it cause the covers are so cheesy.
When it comes to authors I know and love/hate I go by experience. Otherwise I have definitely picked up books solely on their cover, but I don't judge just on that, I also read the blurb. But an ugly cover on a book I haven't heard of before? I don't even notice it most of the time.
