They do have free ebooks right? but not all authors gives out free ebooks. Try searching it, just change your preference to FREE in Price as you go to their site. I have download some ebooks there and it works fine as long as it fall in the FREE ebooks. :)

Why don't you try wattpad.com, where loads of people share their stories for free. A lot of people post their own stories not to get published but just for fun and trust me, some of them are AMAZINGly good :)
Check out mine:

allromance.com has freebies, Obooko.com has freebies in many genre's, if you have some fav authors or one you think you may be interested in go to their website, many authors will post a free short story to get you hooked on their work.  You also might check out places like wattpad, figment, bookcountry, inkspot (this one I think is mainly geared for young teens).  The last ones are writing websites,  several authors from atleast 3 of those sites have published work.  There are also writers out there that post their work for free just google the genre like free romance books and you'll find all different kinds of sites.  Pocketafterdark.com post 2 free reads a month.  don't forget amazon and barnes and noble offer freebies most of them are now self-published authors.  Hope this helps.

the few I checked just seemed to be links to Smashwords

has lots of books but you have to upload one of yours to be able to download for 24 hours (at least it used to be like that )

might be worth checking out for possibly some background info.

There's a lot of information on the internet - enough to make one dizzy! :D  I may have some more websites to share in a day or two.

And last but not least, I would recommend using the search engine: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login   to search for even more websites. :o  (It's a search engine that searches all search engines.)  Happy hunting!

So true, Rotty. :)

Are you up to your armpits in freebies, yet? :D  If not, may I also recommend:

(though I tried to download books, here, with a self-cancelled credit card, once - I was only planning to download freebies, at first, and we can't download unless we give them a credit card number) but they said I couldn't download because the number was invalid.  Now how would they know that from an order that was $0.00!?! :P

Enjoy!
