You know, we Mods have had that discussion, sort of.  it wasn't any title but about books and reading times.  What started it was talking about Library's here in the USA and their digital lending policy.   You can set the time you want to have a book for:  7 days, 14 days and 21 days.    i said "Who takes 21 days to read a book? why on earth do they even have that?"  And that started the discussion.

I'm a fast reader.  I can burn thru 2 or 3 Johanna Lindsey size books in a night.  HOWEVER,  I slow down on the British Mystery Writers.  I cannot read Stephen Booth or Reginald Hill or Ruth Rendell, the same way.  If I don't, I will miss an important part of the book.  When they describe the action, the action has important content.  It's also written so I 'see' the situation not just to describe it like 'Tom put down the book, turned to Ian and said "Do you really think they should be in there?" '  They do not tell you what is happening. They describe what is happening.   An American writer who I have to read the same way is James Lee Burke.  Are they boring? Not in the least but you must actually read them.  Sadly few books are that way any more and most are very very boring for me.  Everyone will be raving about a book and the writer can barely write.  I have no clue why they like it, there is nothing to dig your teeth into.

Even at that, the British Writers/ Burke's books tend to be an evening for me.

I like books that make me think, too, but I understood what you are saying, though LOTR is not one of those for me. Somerset Maughan, Of human bondage (and its nor a naughty book) is one of those. The main character suffers so much that at some point I just wished that he would die already and end with it.
But I feel kinda overanxious about books that have too many emotion... Is like you are drinking expressos the whole time you read. Its boring in its own way and you can put the damn book aside.
