From Book To Screen
« on: October 15, 2011, 02:24 PM »
There are plenty of TV shows and movies that are all based on the books we love to read. But how are the portrayed versions doing? Are they better than their novel counterparts? Or horrible renditions?

Let loose your thoughts on books that have turned into TV series or movies: good, bad, opinion, fact, whatever. :)

To start this thread off:

The Vampire Diaries. Originally written by L.J. Smith, the publishing company has kicked her off the books, but is creating them with a whole new series coming out soon. But I have to say, I'm liking the TV show much better. Casting is great, and while they've tweaked the story quite a bit, they've taken it to a whole new dimension that I'm just loving. It has more oomph to it then the books ever did for me.

From a book to movie perspective: dare I go to Twilight? The books never really cut it for me, but the movies are just killing me. Only watched the first one and I couldn't handle it. Haven't seen the rest and certainly am not planning on it.

I personally despise VD the tv show- I loved the books but i can't seem to get into the show. It really upsets me that they changed the characters and story so much from what it was in the books. I also know that LJ Smith's series The Secret Circle is a new tv show and do not plan on watching it at all because of how much (in my opinion) they messed up VD.

Another one is True Blood- love the tv show, hate the books.

And Twilight....never should have been a movie, not that the books were much better. (sorry, twi-hards. I'm not impressed)

Harry Potter- I thought the books were much better, more detailed but I am a huge fan of the movies. It's exciting to see it all in action- and they did an excellent job telling the story and with the casting. The worst part? The wait to actually see all the movies....

HP totally slipped my mind, but good call on that one.

Another one which I feel strongly about is Bones, based on Kathy Reichs books about Temperance Brennan. I hate the books, but the show is my life. I cannot get enough of the show. They took the books and loosely based the show on it, totally changing pretty much everything except for the MC's name. Thank God too.

LOTR the movies was my fave that was based from the book.  I know there are still big difference from the book but how can you not love Legolas from the movie? but aside from Legolas I really love what they did to the movie it's almost was real!

Christopher Paolini's book Eragon did not really made quite a noise in the screen guess that's why there was no follow up for making of The Elder :(  The movie didn't meet my expectation but it was good enough better than the twilight movie.

I love Buffy the tv series than the novels!!!

Well, aside from those mentioned already, I really love the book and movie of The Notebook. That's really one of my all-time favorite books.
I also love both the book and movie of Dear John and The Time Traveler's Wife. Especially when they changed the ending of Dear John in the movie.
Sorry. I love romantic books. :)

Jess, I must say, HP for me is one of the few books I loved seeing on screen. Sure, the movies weren't as good as the books, but they were pretty awesome, considering how this transition usually goes. LOTR was another series I loved to see on screen, though, they did cut out a large chunk from the books, but that's what happens I guess.
VD series, didn't do a thing for me, I love the books much more. Secret circle I started watching, but, and don't you guys dare laugh, I admit, I can't really remember how the books go. It's been too long since I've read them. :( I'll have to remedy that. :P
I'm not going to comment on the other stuff you've mentioned, or this will turn into an essay. :S
I'll just say, in 90% of the cases, movies have sucked for me. The 10% that didn't suck, weren't better than books, but were good enough. I haven't found a single movie based on a book that's been better, not yet, anyways.

The Secret Circle wasn't cutting it for me personally, but I have to agree with your ratio of 90 to 10 percent with books being better.

One set of movies which I thought did a decent job was the Bourne movies. Really enjoyed those. And I also really enjoyed the movie Schindler's List, which I knew was based on a true story, but not until later did I find out it was based on the book Schindler's Ark.

An extremely bad TV series I forgot was Gossip Girl. Cannot stand that show. To be honest, the books weren't all that great either.

Pretty Little Liars is one I'm hesistant about. I've read the books, which didn't really do anything for me, but the show previews really turn me off. Don't know if I should bother.

Poprad with series, I guess it's easier, you can just watch one episode and if you hate it, well, that's answer enough I guess. :)

See that doesn't work for me, because I find that I like some episodes more than others with TV shows, but then I find overall, the series is decent. I think I'm gonna forgo the Pretty Little Liars though, because one of my friends is hooked on it. And yesterday she tried to get me to see Dolphin Tale. ***shakes head*** Show's not looking very promising. ;)

Yeah, that can be a problem with series. Movies on the other hand (when there's just one) are easier to stomach I guess. Just 2 hours or less to see it through.
I admit I don't spend much time watching TV, or well, almost no time at all. I prefer my nose stuck in a book. :P So, I have no idea how PLL will be, or Dolphin Tale, I haven't even heard of that. o.O

I know what you mean about reading. There are plenty of times where I've hated what's on TV and just picked up my e-reader. (READ: Sports channel) Some shows have me hooked though. Sometimes all the pretty colours on the TV screen get the better of me. What can I say? I'm only human. :)

Heh, I know what you mean. For instance, Bones, that series you've mentioned, I love it! And I haven't read the books yet! I'm afraid to, in all honesty, because well, what if I like them more than the TV version? Or even worse, what if I hate them? Ah, the conundrum. :(

Speaking as a die-hard fan, I advise you not to read the books. The only similarity is Temperance's name. Don't go there. Wait for Nov. 3rd instead. Better yet, watch the series again up to Season 7. That's what I'm doing. It's the only tiding me through the wait! I'm so excited for the new season to start, impatience is my new middle name! ;D

Heh, they are pretty good! And I'd like to watch the series again, but not enough time! I can barely squeeze in enough time to read a book or two these days. :(
But, Nov. 3rd is close! Hold out a bit more, your wait is almost over! :)

Forgot about LOTR, Gossip Girl and PLL- never read any of the books LOTR were pretty good movies, Gossip Girl was all right if you wanted to watch mindless cheesy tv and PLL pretty much sucked unless you were 16 or younger.....

What about all the Stephen King movies? He has had so many books made into movies it's ridiculous... i've only read a few of his books but seen most of his movies and they're pretty decent.

On a side note, I know this thread is from 'book to screen' but The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri was made into a video game (and then an animated movie) and it was awesome. I think they should make more books into video games. ;)

Hey "screen" counts for video games too! I totally have that game and you are so right, it is great. On a side note off that, the video game Uncharted, which is a great set of games, was written as a book . Saw it recently on a Sept. thread I think.

Yeah! I saw this too, but alas, no time to actually try the game out. :S
And Jess, a lot of SKs books have been turned into movies, you're right. I've seen many of them, but I still prefer books. Even though the movies weren't bad at all. :)

I actually like the books. I'm currently reading #8 in the series right now. I think you just need to go into them with your eyes open. They are NOTHING like the TV show. As long as you aren't expecting that and don't mind reading mysteries that are a bit technical.

Technical how? Packed with scientific details? Or something else?
