FYI: Library Program

I'm sure a lot of you know about them.  Some are free for the locals, some are free for those in a state with a state system for allowing borrowing of books from libraries within that system.   Some are free under certain conditions example you are a Vet or in the US Military Active duty.

More information and a list of States in the USA and the world can be found at

When I travel within the Access sticker area, it is easy enough for me to stop in at the local library and join their library.  This then covers all within their ebook district [it saves them on buying single copies when all libraries in that zone join together to purchase books]  So I can easily have access to all libraries in PA if I hit all the zones at some time.

First please check to see if you are qualified for this:
The rules they are are:

You must be 18 or older to apply online.
A Free Library card is available at no cost to anyone who lives, works, pays taxes, or goes to school in the City of Philadelphia. In addition, anyone who is 65 or older or who has a valid card with an Access PA sticker from another Pennsylvania library can obtain a Free Library card without charge.

Veterans and members of the Armed Services can also obtain a Free Library card without charge.

I have an access sticker in PA but I also am a Vet so I am qualified under both programs.  They gave me the card under the Vet program.

I do NOT have to physically go to Philadelphia to get the card activated.  I can do it online.  This allows me to access their digital collection which includes ebooks, audio books and video.

If you are interested in audio books, I use the program sound taxi to convert.  It costs 19 dollars but will convert audio to any form you need and also will remove the DRM so you can listen to it on your device.

IF you are not a Vet you can still join most big city libraries... for a fee. For instance Philly library is $35 a year.  It is more advantageous to affiliate with metro library as they have more copies and tend to be the feeder to the "local" library. Someday i will learn how to convert and remove what is necessaey  :(

There is one in NY that I really want because their management seems to stock a lot of the books I read. It's $50 some dollars.   Philly not so much but for me Philly is free.

It would be nice if they went to a state version for the US where the libraries in a state share the database for that state and if you wanted to join another state's database you payed a fee. Wonderful daydream.  I would vote for the exemption being all active duty military on all states on that one.
