Gotta go with Katniss from Hunger Games series. Not only is she bad a$$ enough to survive not one, but 2, Hunger Games she is also soft hearted enough to take her sisters spot in the games.

I also like Penryn from Angelfall, in a way she's a lot like Katniss (but there's only one love interest instead of two) :)

Took words right out of my keyboard. I like both Katniss and Penryn too. Also liked Rose from VA.

Whoa you've mentioned all the tough girls that came to my mind first as well!
Be it Rose, Dru, Katniss, Penryn, Katsa, Suze, or so many others, I think they've all got a similar trait, and no, I don't mean fighting skills, though, there's that. What I love about these characters is that they're so brave, even afraid, they fight on, stand back up when they fall, and just keep on fighting! That's why I love them.
I can't say they're good or bad, perhaps a bit of both. Some are tougher than others, but they all kick ass, and I prefer to read about such characters instead of the er, whiny, girly variety. :S

Me too... I am so not into this generations "Bella" type girls. I like a character that uses her brains and isn't afraid to stand up for what she believes enough and (of course) can kick butt :)  I don't want to read about any swooning ditzy whiny girls who can't make up their minds on who to date or who thinks everyone is in love with them or thinks "their love interest" is more important than air.

You're right... as much as I loved Thoughtless and Effortless I spent about 80% of the time reading just wanting to smack her! She was way too co-dependent and indecisive.

Well I am going to be a bit odd one here. I don't quite like too bad ass girls or too "Bella" girls either. I like someone who is a little bit of both. Sweet but a little bit of sassy and attitude thrown in. Like Megan from Iron Fey? She isn't exactly badass, but she isn't too -- IDK...noodly? :D sorry that's the only word that popped to describe Bella.

I liked Meghan: she was soft-hearted but still wasn't afraid to stand up for herself :)

I also liked Tris (Beatrice from Divergent)- she's kind of in the middle too, not too "kick ass" but not too "noodly" (lol... i liked your word LIB)

I like both of them too, they are strong and they have spirit.
Also Claire Danvers from Morganville Vampires,Dana(Faeriewalker), they are not strong fighters but they are strong characters.

This Divergent book is coming up way too many times. May be it's time I read it soon. I don't have anything planned after Mephisto Covenant, I'll read Divergent next. Tell me this though - it doesn't have tragedy ending or love triangle does it?

I totally forgot about Claire. I like her too. I haven't read Faerie walker though...avoiding any book that even hints at love triangle.

Thanks athleticchik and Nina. I am guessing it ends in sort of cliffhanger (from your responses), but that's fine I guess...what's one more cliffhanger when I've got a lot more. Phew no love triangle or tragedies :D

There is no love triangle in this series, it's a great read. Dana in the series has some great qualities, but sometimes she a bit too...ditzy when she makes decisions.

Katniss for sure takes my number one so far because of her whole attitude about the Capital as well as her survival ability in the games. I cried when she took Prim's spot because it showed that although she has a tough exterior, she will protect her family at all cost.

Second would probably be Dru because she's been through so much in a short period of time and has come into herself. I also like her sarcastic attitude. I love snarky characters.

Third would be Tally Youngblood from the Uglies series. She went through so much to save the one's she loves. Drastic changes, mind washes, and death helped me realize that although she's not perfect, she has the courage and strength to stand up for what is right.

Amen.

I don't read a whole lot of YA, which seems to be the theme here, lol, but Katniss was pretty kick ass.

My favorite bad girls are the ones that a really really bad, but really good too.  Dorina Basarab from Karen Chance's Cassie Palmer spinoff. She rocks.

I want to be Anita Blake when I grow up (just not as big a slut, lol).  She would be the baddest biotch on the planet.

Tori, Acheron's wife in the Dark Hunter series, especially now that she's a goddess.  And sticking to that series, Kat, his daughter is pretty cool too.

Ooooh, Mac from the fever series.  She's amazing.  From Barbie Clone to GI Jane.  She's such a strong character.  I loved watching her grow through the books.  Speaking of her, I need to go back to the favorite leading men thread and Barrons, because he would rank above V for my favorite leading man.

I would also have to add Stephanie Plum and the aforementioned Cassie Palmer, because they are such big goof balls, and even though they admit they are scared, they are FEARLESS.
"God, if he wasn’t so handsome, strong,
sometimes sweet, didn’t have a Harley, that beard, a tendency to play with my hair, didn’t look so good in jeans and wasn’t so danged good in bed, he would seriously not be worth it."

Hmm..I just finished reading Seduction by Amanda Quick. Not the greatest book in the world, but I loved the heroine, Sophy, in it. She was always standing up to her husband, always proving him wrong because he was so stubborn. She was very strong willed, which I really liked
