have you read the fever series by Karen Marie Moning, absolutley love that series and the main character MacKayla Layne kicks ass, it is a paranormal  :)
“Dying is overrated. Human sentimentality has twisted it into the ultimate act of love. Biggest load of bullshit in the world. Dying for someone isn't the hard thing. The man that dies escapes. I've been reading Suzanne Wright's stuff recently, she only has three books so far, From Rags - contemporary and Here be Sexist Vampires and Feral Sins - both paranormal. Her heroines are fantastic especially Sam from Here be Sexist Vampires, doesn't take any s**t. I'm with you I can't stand doormat heroines.

Totally agree with the Bloodlines and Vampire Academy recommendation - they have strong, independent heriones :) The Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa is also pretty good :)

And I completely agree with you about weak minded heroines - they can be so annoying!
