Historical Fiction
« on: December 29, 2013, 04:04 PM »
I am into my historical fiction phase started by watching Downtown Abbey and the White Queen. I wanted ideas from other people on favourite historical novels..not bodice rippers though.. I've been reading the Cousins War series by Philippa Gregory and am just starting on Susan Higginbotham The Traitors Wife. Any period you fancy pls tell me your greatest reads. Happy New Year.

My favorite historical fiction series was Outlander. While I would not classify it as a bodice ripper, per se...it does have a few scenes that you may not particularly want to read. However, I feel that the content is full enough to overlook that, if it's not your thing.

Thank you. I've read them all and enjoyed them. I love the time travel twist as we wait to see if the daughter gets to meet her dad.

I really hated the 2nd book because you already know what happens, but didn't know how it got there in the beginning. However, I've been reading the series again for the 2nd time, and really loved the 2nd book after I knew everything was going to be ok.

I'm wondering if there going to be another book. I read the Scottish Prisoner but it was a different look at earlier events. I'd like to know if Claire and Jamie went back to Europe at all.Time I read the series again. You've inspired me. :) Do you know any other series like that one?

Kathryn Le Veque has a  few books which can be interesting to you. It's a medieval setting..
Or maybe  this  The Queen's Favourite by Laura Dowers,  Making of England series by Stewart Binns.
Blood & Beauty: The Borgias by Sarah Dunant , French Executioner series by C.C. Humphreys .

And not to forget Jean Plaidy and her books

I hope I didn't brain my damage... - Homer Simpson

I seem to remember a trip back, but I don't want to give anything away in case you haven't read that yet. The 8th book is supposed to come out in spring of this year.

I think the Scottish Prisoner is the spin off featuring John Grey, I haven't read any of those yet.

Unfortunately I don't know of any other books that are like this series. I wish I did!

I also have historical fiction phases. In these I usually end going back to some of the Arturo Perez-Reverte historical novels.

if you like historical fiction, fantasy and vampire all together you'll find The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova one of the best. Try It :)
