Naming Pets After Book Characters
« on: October 30, 2011, 09:26 PM »
Ever since I was little, I've named almost all of my pets after book characters. So I was wondering, am I the only one? If you've ever named a pet after a book character, or have a name you're keeping in reserve for that purpose, post it here!

(Ulterior motive: I'm getting a gray cat (male) in a few days and I'm looking for a fun name.   :D )

Proginoskes (Progo) parakeet (m) from Madeline L'Engle's Wrinkle in Time
Nicodemus  rat (m) from The Secret of NIMH
Morwen  rat (f) from The Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Wrede
Kalamadea  hissing cockroach (m) from Lackey & Norton's Elvenbane
Alamarana (Alara) snake (f) from Lackey & Norton's Elvenbane
Saraiyu (Sarai) snake (f) from Tamora Pierce's Trickster books
Animiramu (Mira) snake (f) from Keyes' Waterborn

Acheron (Ash) from Kenyon's Dark-Hunter series is the best name I've got so far for my new cat.

you're not the only one- I've done it! Named my cat after Hermione's cat in Harry Potter. (he's orange too, though not with a squashy face).

Grimalkin (from Iron Fey, grey cat)....

and i'm not so much a fan of naming animals after book characters, but any strange name. I currently have two cats, named Flash and Zelda, and a dog named Zero. In the past I have had a Hiro (dog), Mr. Kitty Fantastico (cat- Mr. Kitty for short), Buu Buu (hamster), Blue (goldfish), Oscar (cat- Oscar the Grouch), Gizmo (cat).

How about a cat named Katniss? (From The Hunger Games,of course it would be more fitting if it was a female....)

I can't get away with it!!!

In my home our pets, (whether they be dogs, cats, or rats), all get hockey player names thanks to my daughter. Colorado Avalanche player names to be more precise. :)

Even the sparrow that was rescued and I handfed is a hockey player. I guess it's a good thing I love hockey.

I have two dogs,
Sherlock and Dr. Watson... They are spoodles (cross of poodle and spaniel) It drives my brothers mental because they dont read- at all and wanted to call them Fred and SkubaSteve But the rule in our house is whoever feeds and walks it names it, and i was the only one willing to do both :)

Sadly, I have no pets as of now. But I really, really want one. I'm just super picky about it. But this totally caught my eye:

I too am a hockey fan, but I'm more of a Toronto Maple Leaf fan. Don't laugh, it's not nice. ;)

As for an interesting pet name I've come across from a book: My friend has actually named her cat after a Meg Cabot novel, Every Boy's Got One. and the cat's name in that is "The Dude". Honestly...

We named our Springer Spaniel after the Dexter series. We call him Dexter the serial springer, instead of serial killer! Get it? ok maybe we are just wierd but im pretty sure if we let him at them, the rabbit population in our area would be very low.
Smite away! Come on I dare ya!

how about "Adso"? I first read the name in one of my favorite romance series..Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. Adso was a monk way back when, later became the patron saint of mice and milk. appropriate for a wee kitten don't you think?

Oh when I was a kid I had a dog that I named after the main only character in what was  my favourite book at the time. The book was about a teddy bear named Robijntje. That's Dutch for small ruby. It was a Dutch book. I think I still have it somewhere. Anyway, not too long ago I also had a dog called Simba.

If I ever got another cat I'd name her Sagwa after the cat from the cartoon series Sagwa the Siamese cat. Her little sister also had a similar beautiful name.

That's so funny, I remember my aunt telling me a few years ago that her neighbor's dogs were called Hero and Zero

When I think about it, it's more from cartoons than books :
When I was a child, I had two hamsters that I named Bouba and Frisquette, from the anime of the same name, which was about two orphan bear cubs raised by a little Amerindian boy.
Then I had a cat named Helice, from the '80s anime Clementine, who had a cat named like that, He had a little aviator cap with a small rotor on it and he could fly when she was travelling through her dreams. But it was mainly because we had to give him a name with H and couldn't find anything else.
And after that I had another cat named Pongo, from the 101 Dalmatians.  But actually the kids where I got him from gave him his name, him being a white cat with black round spots, and I kept the name....
The ones I have now are different though : Sasha and Artemis-the-well-named (you know, in Greek mythology, the goddess of hunt ??? well, I could swear I have her reincarnation...)

Francesca - my cat- queen of arts.                                                                               Alexandra - my hamster - Something Wonderful by Judith Mcnaught - my fav book.                   Jupi - my dog- from Jupiter - he is a Maltese so I thought it's more appropriate than Zeus (Greek) - also known as JupJup, JoJo and other degrading names I call him:).          Bonnie & Clyde - a girl and boy dog I had - unfortunately they died:((.
