Thank you to the mods for doing a sometimes thankless job. As a former admin and mod of a large fansite, I understand that sometimes decisions have to be made that are not popular with the population of the site.

I fully agree with your decision to be compliant with the laws governing a US based site. And I thank you for providing us with the site to begin with.

Congrats to all the Wonderful Members of the Month!!!! And THANKS to all the mods who work so hard to make this place so awesome!!!

I just found this site last week and to be honest, I was shocked that the books were hosted on this site to begin with. Most piracy sites (and that's what this was, regardless of whatever you want to call it) don't host the actual files because they can be sued. People upload them to file sharing services instead so the site owners don't get into trouble. I'm not criticizing anyone because I'm a member of tons of those kinds of sites but there's no point in pretending that it was just "sharing". Book publishers are especially vigilant about piracy, so I'm assuming there was a threat of a massive lawsuit if they didn't remove them immediately. With the state of the internet the way it is and all the new laws passing, it was only a matter of time before this would happen, so it's completely understandable to me. Thanks for your hard work keeping the site up as long as it was!

I am still rather new and was shocked to find this site from the beginning and knew it was too good to be true so I did get all the books by my favorite authors and I greatly appreciate it!  I know you all worked hard to keep it organized and keep everyone happy.  It's been years since I've been a mod of a forum such as this.  We provided cheats for a certain gaming site and though the risk of suit wasn't that great there's still a ton more issues involved and after a few changes and new site names everyone finally threw in the towel.  At least there was still a ton of other activity here to keep people involved.

I am appalled, actually sick to my stomach, at some of the behavior here I feel the need to apologize and say that not all of us are ungrateful brats.  I know the laws on piracy and was aware of the opt out list BUT as one person stated, the copywrite on the books is an opt out in it's own.  It's like a bank robber's lookout getting mad because they're not robbing banks anymore!  They enjoyed having something for nothing but don't realize they're just as guilty as the person robbing the bank.  I don't know any of you personally but I'm sure that it's going to be hard knowing you've put a lot of hard work into this and keeping it up and then to have to disappoint everyone and deal with the backlash.

It was a good try and I hope that this site can stay somewhat active and don't let anyone get you guys down!  You all did the best you could and did what needed to be done to fund the site to keep it up and running for all us to enjoy.

Thanks again!  I still am super happy with the books I was able to get!  I'll be busy for a while anyways.

Many thanks to the moderators for your hard work and dedication though, must have been tough to keep this site going as long as you have.

And many thanks to all members for sharing  :)

Not sad, not disappointed....more like completely devastated that this facility is no longer available on STP.
I have looked for online libraries and can find free classic literature, children's literature, historic literature etc. but nothing like the contemporary literature that I have found here.
How is it that I can join my local library, for free, take any book I choose and bring it back but nothing like this is remotely available for contemporary eBooks?  How is it that I can buy a book and lend it to my friends without any problems yet eBooks are almost sacrosanct?
With a place as amazing as the WWW creating communities of book lovers who then turn into friends, is it not normal that they would borrow/lend books from/to these friends? Is this not the new present?
I understand that the STP Powers That Be have no choice in their actions but to put it as eloquently as I possibly can, this just plain sucks.
Oh well, onwards and upwards.

I livein  a third world country,
*I don't have credit card, (an international credit cart even less)

* I can't  buy in dollars because:
  1) I don't have any (just pesos)
  2) I can't buy dollars for new policies of my country about exchange.

*exports in my country are closed

So buying any book from a foreign country is impossible

So when US adopt policies against piracy, just shutting download sites, really affect me: my freedom to know more about any subjet (any new material is now published in English, after a long time is translated, if it its translate) and  my choice to read what I want.

I'm really sorry for this new development and yes angry too, not with STP team but with these new laws that cut my freedom
All Sad but true i live in what people call a developing  country in which having a credit card is for the rich people, like so many other i found this site looking for Twilight fanfiction; and to see so many people sharing a passion for reading is so heart warming; is so hard to make kids read this days and i was glad to stumble upon a place which share ebooks in order to help promote that habit of reading that i told my mom about it and she was that is so good, but well I'm sad to see this site change but I guess that the law is the law. We don't have to like it but I  understand that you must abide by it...

Thank you so much for taking in to consideration and returning the Twilight fanfiction threads  :-*
Don't forget after downloading please press the Thank You button. It doesn't take too much of your time.

I was quite startled last night when threads that were there one second had vanished into cyberspace the next (thought I'd somehow busted something  :D ).   I must admit I'm of 2 minds about the whole book-sharing/copyright thing.  If I buy a book in a shop, I can lend it to as many friends as I care to.  So it has been purchased once, but then it is lent around for free.  If I buy a video, I can also share it among my friends (I'm just not meant to show it for hire).  So if someone has bought an e-book, surely they too are entitled to share it among as many friends as they wish?  OTOH, electronics mean that a great many more people can share the original than is generally the case with a physical object (book, video, etc).  So the likelihood is that the creator is definitely missing out on a chunk of income.  I'm on the fence on this one.

However, thanks and congratulations to the Admin/Moderators for the work they've done thus far on running an excellent site.  I'm sure the new site will also be well run.

I knew this day would come. It's kind of weird that yesterday before it happened I actually thought about it (because I saw the opt-out list growing everyday). I do understand where the admin and mods coming from. I don't mind paying for books (in fact I spent a lot on the physical copies), I just don't want to pay for an ebook with the same price as the hard copy (because might as well just buy the hard copy). I have a kindle so I also want to have ebook files of the hard copies I bought and that's when I come to STP for the rescue. I'm sad that we have to come to this conclusion but I just want to say thank you for everything.

This was the best ebook source ever, but I know if I was an author who depends on sales for my livelihood, I'd pretty upset with all the sharing. Thank you STP for all the good times.

Maybe in the future instead of having widespread ebook sharing, STP could operate more like a legal library. There could be a limited number of ebooks to be lent out instead allowing an infinite number of people to download the book at the same time. Limited due dates or borrowing periods would allow more rapid  sharing of the book. Instead of the customary 3 weeks a library would give to lend a book, maybe a book could only be checked out for a week or five days or less depending on the popularity of the book. Waiting lists would probably get annoying and tedious, but it's better than nothing. Perhaps there can be a feature where if the next person on the waiting list doesn't have time or is not in the mood to read the book, this person can pass until the next turn so that the book sharing is quicker but a reader doesn't have to get bumped to the end of the line.

A lot of libraries are now lending out ebooks; they just have a very limited collection and people take forever reading the books so lots of people end up on the waiting list. Some ebook libraries have no waiting list and it's just first come, first serve but I don't know how this would work out for popular books.

I'd just like to say thank you a to all of the admin. and mods who somehow never went postal after repeating "use the search box" more times then should have been necessary. This is a sad but understandable loss. Now I can only hope to find some sort of pail shadow of a replacement. Good Luck to you all!

I found this site a couple of weeks ago, and while I am sad to see it's demise,  I understand why, and consider myself lucky to have downloaded some of the books I have.

If I was an author, yes I would want to see it closed down,  as it is their livelyhood we are effecting.   Downloading an ebook off here is a lot different to passing a paper back around, as you can control that, but you cannot control hpow many download a book posted on here

I am hoping that this message board soes stay up in some form, as I love to see who is reading what and thier thoughts on the different books and authors.
