Only one book for a long journey. What would you choose?
« on: October 06, 2011, 02:08 PM »
Hi fellow STPs

If you have 5 minutes to spare, I have a hypothetical question for you:

Let's say you are to embark on a long journey (months away from civilisation) whereby you can only take one (1) book with you.  What book would choose and why?

Reason I'm asking this question:
I'm wondering if I have missed out on the "book" of a lifetime and I'd hate myself if I did!

Just one itsy bitsy rule:
Book has to be a romance/adult -hey, I don't have anything against YA but heck it, if I'm gonna be stuck somewhere out of civilisation, I'd want me some action ;)

See results below.

I am still curious and it is not too late for your response  ;D

cheers
Aoibheal

You girls are far too forgiving. All my sympathy for Keira went out the window, by the end of Thoughtless. I wanted to pluck out her hair, hair at a time! I mean, seriously, how could someone be such a freaking idiot?! She kept going back and forth like a ping pong ball, between Danny and Kellan. And Kellan, omg, he should get the "Patience personified" award for all the crap he's put up with from her!

yeah i know what you mean... and i think sometimes i even pulled out my own hair  ;D and the betrayal is unforgivable ofcourse, but it's just she was so devastated by her own actions (and she deserved it ofcourse). She knows she's playing with everyone's feelings and she hates herself for it, and that's why sometimes I hated her a little less. That's what I mean with the conflicting feelings I got from the book. I don't know if you understand what i'm saying because it's hard to explain and especially in another language  :D

I understand what you mean, Filo. It's not that, it's just the way the author portrayed her character. I'm horrified when I think that irl there might be a girl like that in truth! I mean, when you know you're hurting someone you love, even when plagued by doubts and insecurities, if you can't stop it, if you can't realize what you're doing, or even worse you realize it but don't stop it, well... I think that such a person is a liar, and selfish. And that's what I got from Keira's character. How many times in Thoughtless has she been like "but I don't want to hurt Denny and then went ahead and slept with Kellan anyways". It drove me nuts. I know there were different circumstances around all three of them, but still.
I gotta give it to the author though, she'd made me hate her, and that's not an easy thing to achieve. I mean, not simple dislike, but complete disgust with the girl.
And wow, what a rant. ;o I wasn't even aware I've felt so much about this lol...

yeah so true, the author did an awesome job! In the beginning Kiera is such a likable sweet girl but when she starts messing around with kellan... well you've described it very good  ;) I love the book, but I don't know if I ever be able to read it again because I'm sure i will get frustrated and annoyed all over again!

There are circumstances like that n there r girls who were in similar situation.. the worse part ? was wen she tells kellan she cant be wid him wen den finds out.. hated her there.. !! cumon if Danny was a bad boy den this books wud hv been like all the other books out there n it wud easy to hate him but it doesnt always happen like that..

Oh, I'm all for re-reading it, Kellan is fantasy material for sure. Even when he was mean and pushy, he oozed sex. In this aspect I don't think he can even compare to Patch/Jace, both of whom I adore. Then again, Thoughtless/Effortless has some pretty graphic scenes, while TMI and Hush, hush don't. :P

Hotnholy, yeah, it's not always like that, but I'm just a straight out person, I won't tell you lies, if I find something wrong with a situation or a person, I don't hide it. It got me into a lot of trouble, but I don't curb my tongue for the sake of pleasantries. If people can't deal with it, it's not my problem, it's just my view of things. And yes, I know a few girls irl who've been in a similar situation, and they've had pretty much the same excuse for cheating on their boyfriends, saying it was hard to let them go, and they just couldn't break it off. Which in my book is a load of bull. I'm a different type of person, I guess, and I just can't agree with such a weak take on things/life. And god, there I go again. Ranting... :/
Anyways, I like books who manage to make react, even if its on a negative scale. :P

but she could've be honest you know. Yeah she was struggling and insecure and didn't know a relationship with kellan would work out and denny was someone she could trust. He really didn't deserve to be betrayed and hurted like that. It is indeed natural that sometimes you doubt your current relationship or that you find someone else. But I really can't stand unfaithfulness. She just should've figured her feelings out and not sleeping and messing around with kellan behind Denny's back...

ok ofcourse this is a book and without all the drama it wouldn't have affect us so much  :) but like you say, it also happens in real life... and in irl for me it's just smth you don't do. There will be plenty of excuses to cheat on your partner, but in my eyes neither of them are acceptable.

I wasn't talking about what I would or wouldn't do, either, lol. I just didn't like the way the author portrayed Keira. She is the MC, and I hated her, which is kind of odd, but not completely bad.
As for what if Danny was a bad guy with a violent nature, in that case I'd say for sure the same thing! Only louder.

Couldn't agree more with you, Filo. On every account. But, I guess if she figured it all out right away and was a different kind of person, the book wouldn't have been that good, eh? :)

Very true! And you have to keep in mind that the author is giving away the books for free! Most of the time i pay between 5 and 7 euro's (7 and 9 dollars?) for a book, and ofcourse i've regretted my purchase sometimes cause the book was so bad. And Stephen's books are free and we can't stop talking about her books  :) they are mentioned in several thread's by now! So really, hats of for that author! If she's gonna sell the books i'm gonna buy them out of respect and to show my appreciation cause she deserves it

Ps: maybe we should ask her if kellan is based on a real person  ;) hehe

LOL, that's just my opinion, and I'm firmly entrenched in it. :P But, worry not, people agree to disagree every day, it's a part of life. :)
You're right about Danny, had he been the bad guy the book would've been very, very different. I'm glad he wasn't, though, even though I hated the way he ended up hurt. ;/

I went offline for only half the day and you guys got on and on about the characters already!!

LOL!  It's delightful the way you guys blabber  ;D  Go ahead and hijack this thread.  It is meant to be hijacked and I love that you guys went to dissect Kellan's, Denny's and especially Kiera's personalities and actions.

Filouke - I can't bring myself to begin reading effortless.  My emotions are still turbulent at this point and I don't wish to commit Hara Kiri just for reading S.C. Stephens books.

Aerinn - I guess I do emphatise with Keira and I agree with you about being too forgiving.

Hotnholy - Imo (only mine and not meant to offend any STP members), it is beyond disgusting when she does Denny and after that Kellan.  Seriously sick!  When I read that part, I think I went pale and then blue in the face.   Had it been me, I'd probably die of guilt on the spot.

All in all, I have to be honest and confess that were I Keira....things probably run the same way too (except for the effing wimpy parts).  Because honestly,  in real life...where on earth can I get 2 hot and sexy and absolutely physically perfect guys crazy after me???  I guess, Keira is human.  Her mistake like what Hotnholy said was being afraid to tell Denny the truth and that was what irked me too.  She was too effing wimpy and took forever actually scrap took forever..she'd probably string both guys until the end of time.  It's the case of wanting the cake and having the pie thingy  ::)

cheers

Right that! That's my thought exactly! I felt like she was stringing them both along! And that is what pissed me off so much. And I was trying really hard not to think about that scene, until Hotnholy mentioned it, the one where she went and slept with Danny after Kellan. God! I think I could've thrown up then. :/ How does one human being, who's professed such love for these guys go and do such a horrible thing? It's just, ick, I want to go scrub my brain clean. :S

Aerinn - I'm afraid the horrendous scene has already been etched in my memory and no amount of scrubbing will remove it from my brain.

Filouke - you had me chuckling!  My husband's looking at me like I'm an alien for laughing at the computer  :-[
Oh I definitely will read effortless, but I'd probably need to read about 3 HEA books before my emotions are completely stable   ;)
