Romance Series
« on: October 08, 2011, 05:46 AM »
I think a series is great in romance, but I wonder what other people think. Do you like an ongoing series such as Janet Evanoich's Stephanie Plum series or Karen Marie Moning's Fever series? Or do you prefer a series where all the books feature new couples, like JR Wards Black Dagger Brotherhood?

Why or why not? Bad experience, or just not fixing things that aren't broken?

I really like series with new couple each book, I have tried other series but just couldn't get into them because either there's a love triangle which I hate, or there's a contrived reason to split the characters in every new book. However I will say that I have read all of Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress series, so far and I love it, so maybe I've picked the wrong series'.

I will admit that sometime my kind of series gets worse over time, and the way that the paranormal ones are written every now and then you get a book which is heavy on the plot and weak on the relationship to move things forward.

Uhm, I kind of like all the options you gave us to vote on. Which is not fair. :/
It depends on the book and its characters if I'll like it more if it's turned into a series about the couple, or if I'll be happy with just one book. Some are written so well you keep wanting more, and some are just right with only one book written. So, it's a really hard decision to make.
One thing though, I believe authors should know when to stop with one couple series. There's that certain moment when they reach the highlight and should stop. Usually after that point books turn downhill.

I like ongoing series. I despise book series where each book is told from another's perspective (I read mostly YA so examples would be Melissa Marr's Wicked Lovely series or Simone Elkeles Perfect Chemistry series....)

While I admire author's that can easily switch characters in the other type of books it just irks me....I get in the zone of reading one person's story/POV and I want to continue it, not have to switch to someone else.

I agree with Aerinn: I like all the options you gave us!  :-\

I love Psy Changeling, Blades of the Rose where each book is dedicated to a couple, but I also like Tairen Soul, Kushiel where more books follow the same couple. But there are also wonderful stand-alone books like Garwood's The Prize or Susan Kay's Phantom... it is really very difficult to decide!  ;)

I like both options but in a way i prefer different couples in each book. I really like when they are all connected so you can kind of know how the others are doing. Examples are the chase brothers, the sullivas and billionaire bachelors. Recently I read the 50 shades books which are three books of one couple and i like it. So both options but it depends how its written specially if you are doing more than one book of the same couple.

I can't choose either ! It actually depends on the story.
I like new couples to each book like in the Malory Family by Johanna Lindsey, but also ongoing ones as in Fever series by Karen Marie Moning. I also like stand alone books. Series are great, but after a while, I need to read a simple story, knowing that the end of the book is the end of the story. Of course, sometimes I like them so much that I wish they were made into a series...  8)

I usually prefer stand alone's because then I can move on to another book with another character, if it's a series just about them, I start to get tired of the usual "arguments" or start to find the characters annoying. I look forward to a big nice, happy, corny with sugar on top Epilogue about a wedding or children.
If I were to like a series it would be like the Malory series by Johanna Lindsey, where each family member finds someone. Now that is some good writing.
If my life was a Supernatural episode, all conflict would be resolved with food and Dean Winchester.

That's so weird, I just posted my reply and saw yours above mine and I realized we both said the Malory Family!  :D

I really loved those books. And I think they're funny sometimes.

I like all the options. It's difficult to choose because I read all those types. It depends on my mood though on what type of book I feel like reading.
