Suggestions needed for books for Breast Cancer survivor
« on: September 24, 2012, 12:50 AM »
My sister's breast cancer is back, stage 4 plus she has been diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer also and my niece, her daughter, would like to get her some books that would help her deal with this.  I guess like the Chicken Soup book says Inspire, support and heal.

I already suggested that book but I don't have experience with this type of book so I am open to recommendations to give her so she can get some for her mother.  I already sent the chicken soup for the soul ebook to her.

I am an 12 year survivor of Inflammatory Breast Cancer.  There are so many Breast Cancer books out there and I have read many but can't say that any of them really talked about the Inflammatory Breast Cancer issues.  The one book that I did find inspirational and numerous was  No More Bad Hair Days by Susan Sturges Hyde.  I took it to chemo sessions and read it to the group of women I was having chemo with.  Sometimes we would get laughing so hard that the oncologists would come out to see what all the commotion was about.

There is a really great Inflammatory Breast Cancer forum for IBC people that I highly recommend over reading a book.  There are Stage 4 women on it that are now NED.  (no evidence of disease or what I like to call it no expiry date.). Expect your sister to possibly have some memory retention issues also known as chemo brain or chemo fog.  I was an avid reader before chemo and had trouble concentrating to read a book during chemo and for quite a while afterwards.  The forum and the support and understanding  from other women going through the same thing helped me a lot.

I don't need to tell you that IBC is serious but there is always hope.  One oncologist told my sister that I would probably only live 6 months but here I am writing to you.  My heart goes out to all of your family.
Please excuse any spelling errors.   I have dyslexic fingers!

I am an 12 year survivor of Inflammatory Breast Cancer.

Thank you so much for posting that   I can't tell you what that post means.

My sister was reading the stats on the internet and they said survival was 2 years.  She's been almost hysterical and has been depressed about it.  She really believes she only has those 2 years.   My niece is at her wits end trying to convince her mother otherwise. I'm going to make sure she sees that post.

She is doing well.  Her markers are down and she is responding very well but now she is sure she is going to die in those two years.

12 years would make her 80.   That's a good goal. :)

That's ok.  My sister is as internet and computer/ebook unfriendly as I am able to get around on it.  She thinks if she pushes the wrong button smoke will come out of the computer and the internet will blow up.  Hardcopy is great.

The list is fantastic.  I've been trying to think of books and had no clue which way to go.

Resources for cancer survivors

As Shorty mentioned (above), forums (and support groups) can do wonders as it's so comforting to correspond with someone who 'gets it' and understands where your sister is coming from.  Some websites in this area can be found at:

If you scroll past the "Sponsored" entries (they're just advertisements) and click on the "Found exclusively on..." entries, your sister may find it more beneficial to visit/read/correspond than reading books on the subject.

But if your sister would also like to read books, you might find something worth checking out at:

I know a lot of people found Fran Drescher's book: "Cancer Shmancer" to be comforting/uplifting/down-right-funny. :)

If your sister doesn't feel like to read, there are always audio-books - (also helpful to listen to if you can't sleep).  I'm sure you know where to look on the web for them (though I think your sister's a smart lady to not trust computers! - chuckles) but one forum worth looking into is:

This is ...offered to patients at prestigious cancer treatment hospitals...

And dear Philo, please tell your sister that statistics are just general numbers - everyone is a unique individual, especially when it comes to their health.  Countless people are walking around, healthy and happy, even though doctors told them they only had six months to live - doctors have been known to be wrong.  (Ask any nurse, we'll tell you!)  Nobody can predict how long anyone with cancer will survive.  If people think they're going to die within a certain time, they often do.
There's the old story about two patients; one had six months to live and the others cancer was in remission.  The doctor, however, got the two diagnosis' mixed up (see what I mean!)  The patient who only had six months to live lived much longer (because she was told she was healthy).  One's mental attitude can make a big difference for a lot of people.

I am an ten year survivor of Breast Cancer.
I paid a great price for it (a breast and a husband disapeared) but I'm fine today.
When I was in the hospital, the only books which entrained me were the recreational ones. I loved the Amelia peabody serie by Elizabeth Peters (and I've learnt a great deal about British and Egyptian history.) The Emerson family is now loke some friends of mine, the witness of a very hard past.
Hope everything turned akay for your family too.

My sister is doing well.  They are holding off on removing the other breast right now because of how major the hip replacement surgery was.  The meds are doing their job.
