Author Topic: What are your fave books in each genre? April 2012: Time Travel  (Read 6341 times)

Online Suike

Here is the monthly thread where everyone can pop in and list their favorite book from a different genre every month.

This month's poll winner is:

Time Travel!

...they don't have to be strictly YA or Adult. Just list your favorites and maybe a reason why or a quick summary. (The books do not have to have both species, can be either or both)

I am going to include a poll at the top so everyone can vote for which genre to feature next week. (I included an "other" option...please specify in a post which genre. Thanks)

 Enjoy!!

I like Replay by Ken Grimwood which was originally published in 1986.  I read it way back in the early 90s and have read it about 2x more.

Brief summary:

Jeff Winston was 43 and trapped in a tepid marriage and a dead-end job, waiting for that time when he could be truly happy, when he died.

And when he woke and he was 18 again, with all his memories of the next 25 years intact. He could live his life again, avoiding the mistakes, making money from his knowledge of the future, seeking happiness.

Until he dies at 43 and wakes up back in college again...

I liked this book because it taught me not to regret things I have done in the past and not to think that had I done things differently, my life would be better today.  Doing something differently in the past will not necessarily make things better today, just different.

I'm going to go with The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. I first bought/read it while on a rainy vacation 7 years ago and fell in love with the story. I've probably read the book more times than I can count and I still cry every time (and I'm sooo not a crier haha).

This one is a classic and I love it...

The End of Eternity by Isaac Asimov.

Summary from Goodreads:
Andrew Harlan is an Eternal, a man whose job it is to range through past and present Centuries, monitoring and, where necessary, altering Time's myriad cause-and-effect relationships. But when Harlan meets and falls for a non-Eternal woman, he seeks to use the awesome powers and techniques of the Eternals to twist time for his own purposes, so that he and his love can survive together.

Timeless by Alexandra Monir was a good read.   The time traveling aspects were very well done and were my favorite parts of the story. The descriptions from the past, and even those from the present, were amazingly detailed and beautiful as well as the love story.

Time Traveler's Wife is great, but I think my favorite might be the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon.

I think the Time Machine from H. G. Wells is great.
For those of you who read french, Le Passager de la Maison du Temps, from Jean-Pierre Andrevon is worth the read. In 1439, a young man takes shelter in an old and dark house that he thinks belongs to the devil. The old man who lives here soon dies and leave him the house, making him a prisoner and the master of it. As time goes by, he become the witness of humanity and soon leans the purpose of this house.
In my opinion, time travel is always a great subject for a book.

I would have to say hands down all of Karen Marie Moning's novels that deal with time travel.

The Time Traveler's Wife --- so far. Im not really into time-travel

and just have to include because I like the TWINS

Lightning by Dean Koontz
Wrath to Butch: That's you. You shall be called the Black Dagger warrior Dhestroyer....
Rhage: But you'll always be Butch to us, as well as hard-ass. Smart-ass. Royal pain in the ass... I think as long as there's an ASS in there, it'll be accurate.
Zhadist: How about bASStard?

^LOL :P

Cinder by Marissa Meyer is my new favorite sci-fi book! What can be cooler than a robotic Cinderella that lives in New Beijing?!

I would say my favourite time traveller book, would have to be Dean Koontz's Lightning..

A storm struck on the night Laura Shane was born, and there was a strangeness about the weather that people would remember for years. But even more mysterious was the blond-haired stranger who appeared out of nowhere—the man who saved Laura from a fatal delivery.

Years later—another bolt of lightning—and the stranger returned, again to save Laura from tragedy. Was he the guardian angel he seemed? The devil in disguise? Or the master of a haunting destiny beyond time and space?

Becasue there was a few twists, it made it all the more interesting, it is also a book Ire read at least once a year
I am not a complete idiot, some parts are missing    :)
