What are you reading? (November 2011)
« on: November 03, 2011, 05:22 PM »
My weekly "what are you reading threads" have not been getting a lot of activity :( so I have decided to make them monthly instead of weekly. This is the first of the monthly threads so please feel free to discuss any books that you are reading, or plan to read, what you think about recently read books or ask questions about books others are reading.

The rules of the thread are simple:

This is a 'discussion only' board. No uploads or requests will be tolerated and will be deleted without warning. Please be courteous and follow the posted rules. Thank you.

I am also going to lock all of the other threads.

Enjoy! ;D

I just finished The Scorpio Races, which I loved!  I'm now reading Crossed. The timing for Crossed worked well since I just finished Matched a few books ago. Not sure what's next. I've got books floating around in my brain but I haven't settled on one yet.

Im reading 2 books at once, as per usual  ;)
- Drink Deep by Chloe Neill, the most recent in the Chicagoland vampires series
and
- Last Breath by Rachel Caine, the most recent Morganville vampires series

and there is a serious trend there!

Next on my list is Maya Banks' In Bed With a Highlander  because i've read so many people saying how good the all of the highlander novels are so i figured i'd try one!

I am reading The Guild Hunter series by Nalini Singh and plan to start Muse (Mercy, #3) by Rebecca Lim and Crossed by Ally Condie next.

@mland- how is Last Breath? I read the Morganville series but stopped about 2 books back (because this site opened me up to too many books to keep up with!) :)

@ereaderuser- what's The Scorpio Races about?

I just finished Dead Living by Glenn Bullion (thanks to ereaderuser) and it's awesome! I also read Vincent boys a few days ago. I finished Thoughtless last night and it was just too long and wordy and I ended up skimming over most of it.  I started 7 Souls by Barnabas Miller but I couldn't get into it at all. The main character annoys the heck out of me. I just loaded up Nook and plan to start Cold Kiss by Amy Garvey and then it will probably be World War Z by Max Brooks.

It was really good. This book in particular was amazing. Its one of those series that I read every book that comes out and never loose interest in. If you have time, i would get back into them just for this book, because the last 2 books have been (for me) the best in the series  :)

I know!! Everyone was just ranting and raving about it and so I caved. It was too damn descriptive! If I want that much description, I'll read poetry! LOL  It had so much potential too! Is Effortless the same way?

Sadly, if you did not like Thoughtless much I'm quite sure you won't like Effortless either. In my opinion, Thoughtless was the better of the two- Effortless tries to give too much depth to the characters.

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

I don't think you have to read Effortless, Thoughtless ends well enough that you can just imagine where you want the characters to go but if you liked Thoughtless I would recommend reading the sequel.

Maybe I was just hoping it would be more like Beautiful Disaster. I just adore that book. McGuire has a beautiful way of bring characters together and a way of making you understand them without being wordy. I can appreciate that in a writer.  Have you read Vincent Boys yet? It's a short but sweet book. I love anything with a southern backdrop though :)

@ereaderuser- what's The Scorpio Races about?

@ jessadia

It's a story about people on an island and how their lives are tied to the water horses that arrive each year. I love all her books.

This is from Maggie Stiefvater's website -

It happens at the start of every November: the Scorpio Races. Riders attempt to keep hold of their water horses long enough to make it to the finish line. Some riders live. Others die.

At age nineteen, Sean Kendrick is the returning champion. He is a young man of few words, and if he has any fears, he keeps them buried deep, where no one else can see them.

Puck Connolly is different. She never meant to ride in the Scorpio Races. But fate hasn’t given her much of a chance. So she enters the competition — the first girl ever to do so. She is in no way prepared for what is going to happen.

No! Mythical water horses. Although there are "normal" horses on the island too. These are larger and have other differences that I won't give away. It's one of those books that you hate to put down and hate when it ends. Of course to me all her books are that way.

Have you seen the movie The Water Horse? I think it came out a few years ago. I'm picturing something like that..it's like a loch ness monster.  Maybe? I dunno!

I'm currently re-reading Mercedes Lackey's Bardic Voices series. It's been a few years, so it feels new again.
As for what I'll be reading next...I've seen so many suggestions and have gotten so many new books that I feel like a kid in a candy shop! I think I'll put all the names in a hat and pull one out. ;]
