From Book To Screen
« on: October 15, 2011, 02:24 PM »
There are plenty of TV shows and movies that are all based on the books we love to read. But how are the portrayed versions doing? Are they better than their novel counterparts? Or horrible renditions?

Let loose your thoughts on books that have turned into TV series or movies: good, bad, opinion, fact, whatever. :)

Technical how? Packed with scientific details? Or something else?

Yes, alot of scientific / forensic details. It's interesting but goes way over my head. I also find the french names and locations a challenge. I'm sure that my mind isn't pronouncing them accurately. :)

Ah, that's what I like actually! No, LOVE, it's one of the reasons I've chosen to watch the TV series. I think I'll love the books in that case. :) As for French, eh, I love the language, so another plus. :P

I recently watched I Am Number Four (happened across it on HBO) and I found it more entertaining and less boring than the book (I didn't care much for the book) Something about seeing the fight scenes vs. the author's description made it more enjoyable for me, though I'd give neither book or movie more than 2.5 stars. The movie might earn a 3 for casting Timothy Olyphant  :-* and I liked #6.

I recently watched Never Let Me Go. The movie was so.friggen.boring. The book wasn't all that great but the movie was unwatchable, especially knowing the outcome. No point so I quit 1/3 of the way through.

I am curious how Hunger Games will go. I want it to be amazing so it will probably be a let down  ::) and just heard Maze Runner will be a movie and that should be interesting.

I really disliked the TV adaptation of the Dresden Files, by Jim Butcher. It seemed like the makers noticed the book popularity but decided to make the TV version for the lowest common denominator. Why else would they replace Dresden's staff with a hockey stick and his blasting rod with a freaking drumstick? I was okay with the plot changes, but little details like that made me want to scream.

I'm a big fan of the series Bones mostly because of the chemistry and relationships between all the characters. Getting hooked on Rizzoli and Isles the TV show. (based on Tess Gerritsen's novels)
I'm not yet decided on Vampire Diaries as a novel; though Ian Somehalder as Damon is hot. :-*  Lots of eye candy too.   ;D
Loved the movies of HP (big fan of the books too!) LOTR books were a little weighty, loved the movie versions and looking forward to the movie version of The Hobbit (a 2 movie deal).
No interest at all in reading Twilight, only got through a few minutes of the movie, tired one more time but gave up. thumbs down for books and movie. Sorry Ms. Meyer.

oh my...where to begin??? there are more and more tv series and movies based on books here lately..
I will always love the books more than the movie/tv adaptions. when I read it's like a movie in my head, I can see, hear and feel right along with the characters of the books.
while I understand that the producers can't put every detail into the shows/movies that the authors put into thier books, it makes me crazy to see a book I love mutilated by the action packed, sexed-up demands of hollywood. why must they feel the need to totally re-write the original work that was popular enough to even be considered for an adaption?

Here are a few truly horrible adaptions that made me cry when I saw what hollywood had done to them.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thiefby Rick Riordan
they aged percy and annabeth-ruined Grover, left out Clarisse completely and pierce brosnan as Cheron??? come on! not to mention the fact that they totally ruined the storyline with madussa, the lotus hotel, the pearls, Luke and the entire quest!

The King of Thrones: George R.R. Martin:
this show can only be loved by those who have NOT read the books. the way he writes, the quirks of the characters everything that makes it so good is lost to sex, blood and death in the tv adaption.

True Blood:
I know this show has been mentioned, but I liked the books so much better.. the show is too lude for my tastes. while there are a lot of love scenes with sookie and her vampires, HBO took that and twisted it into something perverse and dirty. and completely changed some of the characters and series of events etc..etc..etc...

Now for the TRUE DISGRACES...
Stephen King adaptions...he is my favorite author of all time. I am proud to say that I own every single one of his books in both hardback and ebook versions.. the very first book I ever read of his was IT, when I was 11. scared the living bejesus out of me! wouldn't go near a drain by myself for months after I read that book.  The tv adaption was just rediculous!! I couldn't believe he let them do that!
Sai King has over 50 tv and screen adaptions to his credit, not suprising because of his greatness, but je$us chr!st Banannas how they mutilated his work!
Desperation, Dolan's Cadillac, The Mist, The Mangler, Children of the Corn,(they totally ruined it with the 8+ sequals they just had to make) Sometimes they Come Back, The Shining(the tv adaption sucked...Jack Nicholson was AWESOME!!!)  Rose Red,  The Dreamcather, Hearts in Atlantis ( only about 1/4 of this book was adapted)

The closest adaptions of his work that I have seen is: Misery, Delores Claiborn,
The Stand(while a lot had to be cut out, the main characters, storyline and basic "groove" of the book was there.) The Shawshank Redemption(even though it was revised, I will admit that they did an awesome job in drawing you into the storyline, feeling the fear, desperation of Andy and his friendship with Red.
The Green Mile..while originally written in several editions, it was over-all done very well. they focused on the main point of the book and made it great!

Now there's talk of making movies of his epic "Dark Tower" series...I LOVE these books. I waited, not too patiently either, for 20 years for the completion of this epic saga and have read and re-read it at least that many times. everytime I do, I get something new out of it.
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.
The thought of hollywood getting a hold of it makes me cringe. I have known, loved, laughed, cried, and hated Rolad, Eddy Susannah and Jake for over half of my life. I know how I see them and I don't know that I want that image of them and their story to be ruined for me..

Sorry to rant at you all, but I feel better now  ;D  does anyone else feel this way? or is it just me???

To me personally, books will always take centre stage in my heart. I totally lose myself in them. I can picture the characters and I feel (laugh, love, cry) along with them. I also find that the little things in a book that get you really attached to a character are too hard to portray on the screen.
I have heard that Stephanie Mayers The Host is going to be made into a film next year. I adore that book, i have read it about 7 or 8 times, and I cry each time I read it. I am kind of looking forward to seeing it on screen even if I know I will ultimately be disappointed because it won't look how i've pictured it inside my head. I know its rediculous to expect it to be exactly what I want, but i'm selfish and i want it anyway :D

After watching American remake of the Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, and the original Swedish extended version of the Millenium Trilogy.  I immediately tracked down the novels written by Stieg Larrson, and I have to say if that the novels did offer more in terms of character development than that of the live action adapations.  However you have to take into account that director's only have a certain amount of time to create the live action adapations, which would mean that they would have to remove some parts of the novel from the final script.  But I would have to that both the American and the original Swedish adapations were really very entertaining to watch.

I'm not a consistent book over movie person.. my judgment is totally based on how entertaining and satisfying the thing was, so here it goes:

LOTR - movie over books.. for the past 5 years I've tried many times to pick up the book.. but I'm not even past the first 10 chapters!!!.. the book is just droning on and on.. and the movie made a great impression on me that the books just (well, the few chapters I read) didn't measure up.

HP - both are divine.. I'm a die hard fan of HP, read the books and watched the movies more than I could count.. I ususally treat the books and movies as a very separated entities.. so am never disappointed.. usually am into the books more than the movies (since they always cut down Hermione scenes and she's my fav. character), except for PoA, I really LOVED the movie more than the book.

Twilight - books over the movie.. once upon a time I was a fan of the books (and I was totally aware of how lame the righting style is ::) but I found the story compelling) now I'm a fan no more thanks to the very disappointing movies..

Something Borrowed - book over movie.. I liked the movie.. but I loved the book.. the movie was edging the viewer to certain perception of the characters.. unlike the book.. which was unbiased (in my opinion) and made me make up my own mind about the MCs.

Gossip Girl   - series over books .. well, truth is I watch the show for the sole reason of Chuck and Blaire.. all other characters and plots are very dispensable to me.. these two gave a whole new life to their characters <3
Alice in Wonderland - Cartoon series over the book and the movie.. :D weird one I know, but I find the book highly confusing.. I didn't like Mia portraying of Alice.. and I watched the cartoon series when I was young in 3 different languages and still found it captivating.

Well, you got these for now.. but I've got to say that many of the books people dub as masterpieces, classics and piece of art, I frequently find them flat, dull and way over-the-board overrated.
