What are your fave books in each genre? Werewolves/Vampires
« on: November 03, 2011, 05:29 PM »
I have seen several people asking for suggestions for books, so I thought maybe we could start a weekly thread where everyone can pop in and list their favorite book from a different genre every week.

This week's poll winner is:

Werewolves and Vampires

...they don't have to be strictly YA or Adult. Just list your favorites and maybe a reason why or a quick summary. (The books do not have to have both species, can be either or both)

*I am going to include a poll at the top so everyone can vote for which genre to feature next week. (I included an "other" option...please specify in a post which genre. Thanks)

 Enjoy!! :)

Week 3: Angels and Demons can be found You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login.

Week 2: Paranormal Romance can be found You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login.

Week 1: Dystopians can be found by clicking You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login.

I might sound crazy, but don't laugh.  ;D LOL (and yet I was the one whose laughing)  ::)

1. Twilight Series by Stephenie Meyer

Reason: This was the first series I've read. A recommendation from my cousin, honestly, I don't like reading. But when I started Twilight I couldn't put it down. That's when I started reading lots of books. And I fell in love with Edward Cullen from then on. Ha ha. A forbidden love that hurts too many people in their lives. Bella's clumsiness almost made me laugh in some parts of the story, is there really a person prone to accidents all the time??? Meyer's way of writing is really good, like how she described the meadow, the wedding and the birth of their child. I was hooked ever since I started reading the whole series.

2. Night World Series by L.J. Smith

Reason#1: This series made me think hard as to who were the four Wild Powers she was talking about.

Reason#2: The characters were amazing. Vampires, Werewolves, Shapeshifters, Witches and Humans, all in one series.

Reason#3: The Soul mate Principle theory was incredible.  ;D Smith almost made me believe in that that might actually exist.

3. Vampire Academy Series by Richelle Mead

Reason#1: Rose Hathaway!  ;D

Reason#2: Dimitri Belikov and Adrian Ivashkov!  ;D

Reason#3: A well-written series by an amazing author. About Friendship, Love, Betrayal and Sacrifice. Who would you choose? Will you follow your heart?

4. House of Night Series by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast

Reason#1: I love the book covers, LOL. Seriously, that's the reason why I bought the books. And when I started reading them, I made the right decision to buy them. Though most of the time I hate Zoey, it's like she wanted all the guys, what a selfish woman. LMAO. But as the series continued, I like the way she stands up for her friends and to what she wanted.

Reason#2: I adore Heath Luck, he didn't give up on Zoey even if they're all different. He didn't care if Zoey's a vampyre, he will do anything to protect her. Because of his LOVE for Zoey, he SACRIFICED himself by losing his life. On the Otherworld, he gave up Zoey for her to be able to put the pieces of her soul back together and return to the real world. But that doesn't mean he don't love her anymore. He's the kind of guy I might spend the rest of my life with. LOL

Hmm, that's it.  ;D I'm not good in giving book reviews, and my English kinda s*ck.

There are some werewolves/vampire books whose cover was so hauntingly beautiful but when I read them, ugh, it made me want to throw the book away or tear them to pieces, but I spent my own money for it and that's what made me mad. Every single dime counts, and I spent most of it to books that weren't worth buying for. I'm ranting, I'll stop now.  :-X LOL

Gosh this is really harder than i thought to narrow it down... i dont want to miss one!
For the vampire genre:
Adult:Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress Series
These books have a lot of humour, a good romance and an even better story line. Definetly my all time favourite vampire genre books. There are 6 night huntress books and 2 night huntress world books, with the side characters from night huntress having their own main story lines.

YA: Richele Mead's Vampire Academy Series
its what i read when i feel like not thinking... its enjoyable if you don't take it too seriously, light hearted with some very good one liners and a heroine who is not timid or shy around guys, which is the one thing that annoys me from most YA series- girls freezing up when they encounter a cute guy. It also has an action story line- there are 6 in the series and they begin good, the middle couple are a bit boring but the last book is back to standard.

Sort of YA: Rachel Caine- Morganville Vampires series
Love every one of these books. There are 11 books so far in the series. I was lucky that i only got onto them after about the 7th was released, because Caine's technique is to leave the novel on a cliff hanger or reveal a secret in the last page, leaving the anxious wait for the next book nearly impossible.
The love interest is strong and isn't a typical one that falls apart after a simple misunderstanding. It also isn't the base of the story but supports the narrative. For me, each novel is better than her last, and the characters are all interesting and passionate.
And werewolf series...
Adult: N J Walters Legacy Series
so far there are 3 books, they are pretty typical werewolf romance stories about finding a mate etc.

YA: Maggie Stiefvater- Shiver Series
It's a trilogy and the take on werewolves is a little bit different, and the romance is not the main plot which you find a lot when reading these types of books; the romance centers and the actual story line of events is non existant.

And i think thats about it... i'm sure as soon as i post this i will remember another series :P

My favorite author of these genres is Christine Warren

Big Bad Wolf

Graham Winters is a werewolf with a problem. His idiot cousin Curtis wants to take over as Alpha of the Silverback Clan because of an archaic Lupine tradition that says an unmated Lupine can't lead a pack. So what is Graham supposed to do? Pull a mate out of his hat? Where else will he find the perfect woman for him in time to thwart Curtis’s plans?

As it turns out, the answer is right under his nose.

Six months of unrequited lust for a playboy werewolf have gotten Missy Roper no closer to fulfilling her fantasy of becoming the love of Graham Winters’s life. But when her four best friends decide to dress her up for a blind date the night of Reggie and Misha’s engagement party, everything changes. Suddenly Graham is declaring his undying lust, the members of his pack are calling her Luna, and his cousin and rival are trying to kill her. Clearly, a little adventure can go a long way.

Now the question is whether Missy is willing to risk her heart and her life for a chance at finding out whether werewolves really do mate for life...

This series includes everything from faeries to wereloins

hey.i am new here on the forum and i happened to stumble on this thread..i must confess i havent read alot of vampire/werewolves books.
but i did read anne rice -vampire chronicles. loved it. there r movies after some of her books too (interview with the vampire maybe u heard of it). makes twilight seem insignificant.  its mostly about the vampire lestat and his..lets say adventures. its more dark and seems more serious.some things in that series really got me thinking.
and some erotica with vampires is by Lara adrian - midnight breed. it may seem weird with all that vampires are actually aliens and what not but once u get past that it gets exciting. each book is about one particular vampire in this group and how they find their breedmate (soulmate). its also a little bit of action and drama as well as erotica.
just thought id mention them since i havent seen them here. ^.^

For Werewolves - The Wolves of Mercy Fall series by Maggie Stiefvater (I absolutely love everything she writes)

For Vampires - The Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer (the only vamp series I've read)

Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress Series is undoubtedly my favorite vampire series.  She does a spectacular job developing her characters (there is nothing else out there like the Cat/Bones relationship), she always manages to keep her plots fresh and exciting, and once you're done with the first book you won't be able to stop. And Bones is just: yumm  ;)

This one's easy. Definitely loved:

The Twilight Saga-Stephenie Meyer

The Vampire Academy series-Richelle Mead

The Women of the Otherworld (#1,2,6,10)-Kelley Armstrong( featuring the werewolves Clay and Elena, hands down my favourite werewolf series)

The Darkest Powers series- loved the second and third book, the first book was just ok.

The Dark Divine series-Bree Despain

Vampire Crush-A.M. Robinson

Sunshine-Robin McKinley (loved most of the book, but didn't really like the ending)

How did no one list The Mortal Instruments Series by Cassandra Clare?

TMI eats Twilight for dessert! It's suspenseful, sexy, and humorous. There're vampires, werewolves, faries, warlocks and everything else. Clare did an amazing job  ;)

So many choices….  Some great ones already listed.   All my favorites are of the adult variety

Were Series:

Magnus Pack Series Shelly Laurenston
Pride Series  by Shelly Laurenston.
-The series are interconnected but can be read as independently.  The books just make me laugh, the kind that can bring tears to your eyes (my hubby now asks me not read in bed because I am too disruptive).  Great dialogue that combines contemporary with paranormal

Granite Lake Wolves Series by Vivian Arend
- From the first book I was hooked, I loved that the author started with a character with disabilities but did not limit her.

Lycan Warriors Series by Nathalie Gray
- A great mix of urban fantasy with paranormal

Immortal Ops by Mandy M. Roth
- I am sucker for ops books and the shifter twist just makes it better

Vampire Series:

Midnight Breed by Lara Adrian
- Fighting evil even when it comes from family.  Each books push the series along with teasers for the next hero.  Can’t wait for the next one: Darker After Midnight Jan 24th.

Scanguards Vampires by Tina Folsom
- These bodyguards to have strength and vulnerability that allows the character to be more real.

Black Dagger Brotherhood by JR Ward
- Nothing else needs said.

Brotherhood of Blood by Bianca D’Arc
- Who doesn’t like a little wine in the background?

Wow this is a hard one as I can't choose just one like most. I must say that I don't read much other then the adult genre but I have read like most everyone the Twilight Series.
I agree that Lynday Sands Argenaeu series is great. I love the humor and emotional connection she brings to her books.
I also really enjoy the Lydia Dare Werewolf series, but I would say if I had to choose I would pick the Cascadia wolf series as my favorite werewolf and Erin Mccarthy Vampire books.

The Parasol Protectorate series by Gail Carriger

The Parasol Protectorate series have vampires and werewolves, it's also steampunk..so YAY!! Love, love, love this series..it's so witty, charming and full of humour and adventure. Alexia is a smart, wonderful and worthy heroine & the hero, Lord Maccon is wolfish, grumpy and sweet! The writing just sparkles and it stands out from all the other urban fantasy offerings :).

It's a good thing there don't seem to be rules against thread necromancy here...

On topic: I haven't really read many exclusively vampire-oriented series. I usually can't stand paranormal romances in the vein of Twilight, and it's rather difficult finding vampire books minus the romance.

As far as werecreatures go, there is one YA series I liked - Wereworld, by Curtis Jobling. The main character is a werewolf, but there are a lot of other animals - now that's something I don't see often.

Interestingly, I just read a review about the Parasol Protectorate books recently. Again, not a romance fan, but I will read it just for the steampunk... and the boatloads of tea.

Totally Vampire Academyat first I was set against it .. because.. well it sounded so cheesy and me not a big fan of fangs and eternal lives and all... but this one somehow made a perfect balance.. I LOVE Rose and Dimitri .. you can't but simply love them and fall hard for Dimitri though he frustrated the hell out of me sometimes.

All other characters had great storylines as well.. and all will get u rooting for them at one point or another..

This series compelled me so much that I read the whole 6 books in less than a week and totally lost track of time (Luckily I was between jobs back then =D)

Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead
1. DIMITRI YOU LITTLE THING YOU.
2. Their vampires are way awesome.
3. DIMITRI YOU AMAZING PIECE OF FOREIGN LABOUR
4. Rose's snark and fighting skill
5. Dimitri!!!! *glomp*

House of Night by P.C and Kristen Cast
1.Though they are very draggy I still read them for, you know, strange unfathomable reasons. Maybe because I keep laughing at Zoe. And how she manages to fall into so much creative shit. You know, I'm starting to think this would be better as a tv series than a book series but digression! ahem.
2. APHRODITE no one seems to see the value she has- she's the only one who makes the most sense. She's the person they don't know they need! She is very caring (though she shows it in strange ways) and she's always there for the nerd herd.

Otherworld Series by Kelley Armstrong
The werewolves in this story out shine any other. I really like how their transformation isn't the poof!thing but rather an uncomfortable transmogrification into a different bone structure that keeps the story feeling realistic. I also LOVE the characters themselves, Elena, Jeremy, Clay their personalities are so varied and such delicious fun!

Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins
Jenna, our pink-loving short sidekick vampire. She and Sophie never fail to crack me up with their banter. And when she goes all vampire and snarly? Pretty awesome and scary loving.
Also, not to forget, Lord Byron  ;)

So many more but these are one of the few that methinks is worth the while.
