Author Topic: What are your favorite books in each genre? (Sept 26th- Oct 2nd: Dystopian)  (Read 12211 times)

Offline jessadia

I have seen several people asking for suggestions for books, so I thought maybe we could start a weekly thread where everyone can pop in and list their favorite book from a different genre every week. This week I thought we could start with Dystopian novels....they don't have to be strictly YA or Adult. Just list your favorites and maybe a reason why or a quick summary.

*I am going to include a poll at the top so everyone can vote for which genre to feature next week. (I included an "other" option...please specify in a post which genre. Thanks)

 Enjoy!! :)

Hah, I so know how you feel! I don't dare to read on my PC anymore, because I keep getting distracted with STP. :P
Btw, half-way through Divergent, and omg, I love it! As for you girls who haven't read HG yet, well, Katniss might or might not be right to you, but I think all in all, you'll like the books if you like Dystopian theme.

Well, I find it quite different compared to HG, in lieu of the storyline, but not better or worse, not yet. I will finish it tomorrow, and I'll give you my opinion then, but so far, I really like it. I doubt the author will make a mess of the second half of the book, since she's done such a good job so far.

Divergent is another one on my TBR list. So many books and such lil time :).

@filouke: There were. Lately STP is overriding everything. Can you believe that I am hooked enough to spend time conversing here instead of reading :).

I haven't had the slightest idea what's Dystopian is I guess I'm one of those stuck in the Historical romance lane  :) so I avoided this topic but since I can't get enough of STP here I am my curiosity got me here...and to my surprise I had read Hunger Games! Imagine that I thought I'll be one of those who's not into this Dystopian thingy but I liked HG and I even influenced my friend to liked it too LOL  so I guess this I might check out those books you guys have mentioned  ;)

Yes, give it a shot. There are so many great dystopian novels out there that are in my opinion even better than The Hunger Games, although I did love that series too. And then maybe give zombies a try. I love anything zombie!!

Thanks ereaderuser, I think I might just do that any suggestion what should I read next after my hunger games experience? ummm except that zombies thing I guess Id rather not try that one  ;)

I think my favorite was Enclave (Razorland #1) by Ann Aguirre. Also Birthmarked / Prized by Caragh O'Brien. And I can't forget The Maze Runner series by James Dashner. I'm reading the third book in the series now, The Death Cure.

As far as zombies... it's all about the survivor aspect. I've read some awesome zombie books over the last couple years.

I go check that Maze runner I've heard some great feedback out it from the other forums.

With the zombies thingy, I might give it some thought but i'm not promising!  ;)

thanks for that book suggestion again  ;D

I would recommend Maze Runner trilogy too. I just finished the third and last book Death Cure last night. It was beyond amazing. Dashner can tell a story that will make your hands break out in goosebumps and sit at the end of your seat and can't put the book down kinda way. Loved it so much. I wish there were more books like that.

PS: Maze Runner is a boy POV book with little or no romance, if that makes any difference. To me it didn't but if you prefer girl POV or romance, then this is not your book.

Thanks for the good review that's what matters for me. How great the story is and I'm not really into romances in stories I'm more how on the story unfolds, how each mystery is being solve and how the author makes you feel involved somehow in their story :)

Another series that I really enjoyed which I don't think has been mentioned is the Last Survivors series by Susan Beth Pfeffer. Unlike The Hunger Games and Maze Runner series, which had some far out stuff happening, this series seemed more realistic to me. Not how it all came about, which I won't give away here, but what the survivors went through.

I've heard lots of praises for Lois Lowry's The Giver. Anyone got the chance to read it yet?

Offline jessadia

The Giver is one of the greatest books ever written- you haven't read it yet? it was required reading in elementary school and in college- i love the book so much i even own both an original and newer paperback copy. its fantastic!

All the ones mentioned are great some others that I've found that I love are Shadow Children series by Margaret Peterson Haddix, The City of Ember series by Jeanne DuPrau, The Forest of Hands and Teeth series by Carrie Ryan, the Aftertime series by Sophie Littlefield.  I know I've read a ton more that I liked allot but those are the first that come to mind.

Hahaha, I'm that much of a loser. It doesn't help that I live in a country that doesn't require that for elementary reading. There's so much to improve on literature education in third world countries. I have the book though, (even the other Lowry titles) and I'll try to get around to it, my TBR list is so long!

Dystopian is currently my fav. genre..

but for me these are possibly my best:

1. Hunger Games.. because it's shocking and daring and like nothing else I read before it.

2. Uglies.. because in so many ways it made me realise things about the reality we're living I've never paid attention to before.. and because Tally is very real person.. and just like a real person.. she somehow falls in the same predicament over and over again.. not because she's stupid.. but mainly because life sucks like that.

3. Starters.. it's a pretty new book.. but it's amazing.. twisted not very expected ending.. but what I loved the most is the idea.. and how very real and alluring it can be.. I'm a young person and always dream of myself as an "enhanced" version of me.. so if I'm old and had the chance to live with a perfect body.. a body that suits my spirit more than I find mine do.. I'm not sure am gonna pass the chance.. and that's what's the book got me thinking about.. (it got me to the track - I still have an aversion to the gym, so thought not to push it at first =D).. so if a book gets you to improve your life and that's not even its target.. you just gotta love and respect that book.
am pretty sure there're are others yet.. but these three are it for now
