Author Topic: What are your favorite books in each genre? (Sept 26th- Oct 2nd: Dystopian)  (Read 12223 times)

Offline jessadia

I have seen several people asking for suggestions for books, so I thought maybe we could start a weekly thread where everyone can pop in and list their favorite book from a different genre every week. This week I thought we could start with Dystopian novels....they don't have to be strictly YA or Adult. Just list your favorites and maybe a reason why or a quick summary.

*I am going to include a poll at the top so everyone can vote for which genre to feature next week. (I included an "other" option...please specify in a post which genre. Thanks)

 Enjoy!! :)

To get us going here is a list of my favorite Dystopian novels (YA):

*Wither by Lauren DeStefano
-I like this book because it's a view of the future that I think is actually plausible.

*Divergent by Veronica Roth
- This book is very well written and features a strong, independent female main character (Tris).....and a hot love interest (Four)

*Awaken by Katie Kacvinsky
-This book is pretty tame but it's still an amazing read.

*The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins
-You haven't read it, you need to...and if you have then I don't need to say anything more :)

I agree with your books jessadia. I haven't read Divergent yet but I plan to.

I also liked:
Matched (also kind of tame)
Birthmarked - I'm pretty excited for the upcoming sequel to this one soon!
Delirium - the whole love is just a disease idea is pretty interesting
Across the Universe - Dystopia with a sci-fi space twist!

My only suggestion with all the good dystopian books is to read different genres in between each one.. otherwise all of the different ideas get mixed together in my head and I kind of forget which story is which.

Offline jessadia

I liked Matched and forgot about Delirium (oops!) but haven't read the others yet.... here's another one that I forgot about (not sure if it's technically classified as "Dystopian" but it features an end-of-days type plot):

*Angelfall by Susan Ee
-absolutely wonderful read :) (also features angels in it so it's like a double whammy )

Offline LivingInBooks

I absolutely LOVED Maze Runner and that so far has been my most fave Dystopian :)

Offline jessadia

I read Possession....it does take a bit to get into the book, but once you do I promise it's not as horrible as it first seems :)

I never really liked Dystopian books and I still don't but my friend got me into them by force and I've liked only a couple of them I've read. All the books I liked were already listed with the exception of the Incarceron Series by Catherine Fisher, the Demon Trappers Series by Jana Oliver and the Maze Runner books by James Dashner.

I'm reading Divergent by Veronica Roth now or really trying to read it but I can't seem to get into the story. It's taking me forever to finish, I don't know if that's a bad sign or not. I know everybody likes the Hunger Games but that's one book series I can't stand for the life or me, I didn't like the books and people can't understand how I don't like it.

Hunger Games :they are great books!and loved the M.C.
Divergent :Can't wait the next!
Uglies:strong characters ,fast-paced,thrilling.
Skinned :by Robin Wasserman.didn't like the end though.
Enclave too.
XVI by Julia Karr: The story is very plausible.
V for Vendetta :amazing art,and my favorite.love the sarcasm, love everything about it!

I quite liked XVI by Julia Karr.

Dystopian is a favorite genre of mine.

My latest faves in YA are:

Divergent... Veronica Roth

Enclave...... Ann Aguirre

Containment... Christian Cantrell

The Adoration of Jenna Fox (Jenna Fox Chronicles #1)... Mary E. Pearson

Then there is the book I stayed up nights thinking about after I read it...The Passage by Justin Cronin.
It is either a love it or hate it relationship. I am in the middle somewhere. But, I certainly remember it, which is more than I can say for many others.

Offline Anams

Havent heard about "The Passage", your "love it or hate it' comment has made me curious. Shall have to check it out :)

Haha, I don't like HG too *dodges the tomatoes* :) But I did like Divergent! It was probably because the main heroine of Divergent wasn't as annoying as Katniss.

Oh no nico, now uve had it ..lol... Do you have any idea how many katniss fans ::) there are  ? Chk this out:

It's a book people generally like :)
To me it feels like a bad reality show and I can't stand those.

Offline jessadia

well, to each their own i suppose (although i am one of the 'tomato throwers' lol)  :P

Well, you've mentioned most of the books I like already.
Just gonna highlight Angelfall, which Jess has mentioned, I simply love that book! :P

I have to say one of my all time favorite series is Christopher Pike's Thirst Series. Sita the main character kicks butt. She is strong, brave, and courageous ~ she is no push over. The story is not just about vampires, it talks about other dimensions, aliens, the afterlife, telepathy, telekinesis, and there is tons of action involving police, FBI, military... etc...

So if you have not read it you should. It is a very intelligent series.....

Intelligent, hm, what do you mean exactly? That it's scientifically based or something like that?

LOL>> you made me laugh.... Well there are a lot of beliefs that are not proven "scientifically" but that does not mean that there are theories or beliefs that people have that are not possible or true. For example the belief in the afterlife or the belief in there being alien life that might exist in a different realm or dimension than us.

I might not necessarily believe everything that is discussed in this series but I can appreciate the thoughtfulness behind what was written. The way certain beliefs or thoughts are written smart enough to be contemplated as plausible. The book talks about the Telar, the Array and Cradle.... how the author develops the story and explains what the Array is seems plausible.

Like I said it might not be scientifically proven, maybe more sci -fi 'ish but when you read it you don't say, oh that sound so dumb it doesn't make any sense... it is more like wow, maybe that could really be true..

Yeah, that's why I asked what you meant. Many books out there have good ideas that are explained in a very bad, improbable way.
And I was referring the "scientifically based" comment to the FBI/police part of the book, their investigation methods and other stuff.
I'll put the series on my TR list, I'm curious about the books now. :)
