Young Adult series
« on: November 14, 2012, 12:21 PM »
I am wondering if anyone can suggest a series of books for an 11 year old girl?  My daughter has read about 30 books since the end of may.  The series she has read and likes are: Daren Shan; Circ Du Freak, James Patterson; The Witch & Wizard series and Maximum Ride series.  She is currently reading Alyson Noel; House of night series.  Which she is almost done with.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!!! :-*

Wander Dust by Michelle Warren  - Free on Amazon and Kindle right now.
Nothing inappropriate for that age in the book.

Divergent & Insurgent by Veronica Roth

I loved Percy Jackson's books!!! By Rick Riordan. And the Heroes of Olympus too. Same author.

I'm currently reading Pegasus and the Olympians series by Kate O'Hearn. Pretty good too. :)
Oh, and The Last Apprentice series too by Joseph Delaney. ;)

Eh, why are you letting your 11 year old kid read House of Night and/or Alyson Noel's (btw, is that the Immortals Series?). They got sex in there and flirting to the nth level. Immortals Series basically about Ever and Damen trying to get it on. :D And the House of Night, the girl there, Zoey had different guys. There's even the part where she's likes 3 guys. :o

Haha that is so weird. I basically read all the stories your daughter was reading 2 years ago.

Hmm... I would suggest Percy Jackson and the Olympians. It's an adventurous book and also kinda educational. You learn about some of the Greek Gods and some of the myths as you're reading.

Also, the 'Virals' by Kathy Reichs. It full of mystery, action and supernatural. A girl and her group of friends are exposed to a virus making them have canine abilities. While this is happening they are trying to solve a murder. It has only a few curse words but all it is is the 's' word.

And Last but not least , The Summoning' by Kelley Armstrong. I can't say how much I love this book. The things that the main character does in this book probably makes you want to start face palming. It is just too funny and embarrassing but the story is sometimes scary with all the supernatural going on.

Hope this helps :)

Abarat series by Clive Barker

Tithe, Valiant, and Ironside by Holly Black

The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander

The Abhorsen Trilogy by Garth Nix

The Seventh Tower series by Garth Nix

Good luck :)  As difficult as it may be to keep her supplied with books, it's worth it.  My mom put up with all of my reading.  A few of the series I mentioned she found for me.

Lex?  By the time I was 11 or 12, I was reading the regular section for adults  at the library.  I was out of the Kids and YA because I had read everything in them.

The only effect it had on me was making everything that everyone at school was giggling about boring.  I already knew about it and it made the other kids look stupid for not knowing.

LOL! I know! But I didn't know that moms are encouraging it. I mean that kind of story line. :D I didn't let my mom know I read sexy and a bit x rated novels. :D

My Mom did right after I was 15 and she said [as red as her hair and that was Flame Red]  "It's time you and I had a little talk"

I said "Sure Mom, what do you want to know?"

She said "WHAT?"

I told her "I read the Joy of Sex and Everything you wanted to know about Sex but was afraid to ask at the library.  What do you want to know?"

Her reply was "THEY should give them to every kid"

Thank Goodness I liked to cook.  No one wondered what I was reading behind the Betty Crocker Cookbook.

She also never said a word about my reading material.   Didn't hurt 4 degrees later.

Thank you everyone for the suggestions.

I am letting her read these books because she has read almost all the children's books.  By the time she was going into the 4th grade she had read every book in her schools elementary library.  She read the Percy Jackson books in 3rd and 4th grade.  She is in 6th grade and reading on a 10th/11th grade level.  She read Flowers in the Attic last year and she comes to me with any thing she doesn't understand.

Children's books she should not miss:
The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander (5 books)
The Wolves of Willoughby Chase by Joan Aiken (and the rest of her books too though Wolves was the best)
A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle
A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park
Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Robert C. O'Brien
Beauty by Robin McKinley
Bud, Not Buddy and The Watsons Go to Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis (and anything else by him)
Jane-Emily by Patricia Clapp
Just about anything by Cynthia Kadohata
Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes
Carry On, Mr. Bowditch by Jean Lee Latham
Most Newbery Award winners, really!

Young Adult books:
The Truth Teller's Tale trilogy by Sharon Shinn
The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins
Watership Down by Richard Adams
The Tillerman series by Cynthia Voigt
A Time to Love, A Time to Mourn (aka May I Cross Your Golden River?) by Paige Dixon (aka Barbara Corcoran)
anything by Ann Rinaldi for American historical fiction
The Eagle of the Ninth by Rosemary Sutcliff (and her other books if you like British historical fiction)

Fantasy books for adults (NOT that kind of adult!) that would be good for advanced younger readers:

The Samaria series by Sharon Shinn
The Sevenwaters series by Juliet Marillier
anything by Isaac Asimov (sci-fi)

There are so many more, but that's all I can think of now!

I read Lord of the Rings at 9, Agatha Christie at 11, and Ayn Rand at 15.  I don't know if my mom was aware of my reading material but she never prevented me from reading, and my dad also had Everything you Ever Wanted to Know About Sex But Were Afraid to Ask on his shelf, and I read that too, though in bits and pieces over time.  LOL They may not have been aware I was sneaking Harold Robbins, The Godfather, The Thorn Birds, and Rosemary Rodgers from their shelves too but I like to think I turned out ok!

I would suggest my sister the vampire series by Sienna Mercer, easy to read and fun, the first 4 books are easy to download, after that there is a chaos though
