About kobo
« on: October 23, 2012, 12:23 PM »
Well, I had a low cost reader I got from China which worked very well (had a terrible battery life though) but it is dying.

What I liked about it was that it read both epub and mobi an was... well... cheap, lol

So recently Kobo came to my country (Portugal). So far only the kobo touch is for sale and I am waiting for Kobo Glo because I read a lot when it's dark.

Most reviews I find say it's pretty good but don't dwell much on the files suported, so my basic question is: is it good with both epub and mobi as they advertise? And pdf can be read without loosing one's mind?Doesn it have dictionary in more than one language? For that matter is it possible to change the device language? The battery is ok? Also, is the micro SD card interface easy to use, because I read that in other readers it sucked.

Thanks munchly for any tips.

1st of all the Kobo range of eReaders only support epub and pdf file formats.  It can read mobi files but you will only be able to view it in the raw markup text format.  So it might be worth your while to convert your mobi files to epub with calibre.  As with all eReaders with a small screen, reading a pdf will require you to zoom in and navigate page to read the text.  The microSD card function is properly similar to that used in most android tablets so I would imagine you would have very little trouble with that.

You should be able to change the language settings very easily via the settings menu.  The only thing that I can say is bad about the Kobo Touch is that the eInk screen doesn't refresh with every page turn.  So you will get a little bit of ghosting on the next page.  Apart from that it's a pretty nice little eReader.

I'm sure it is too late for my two cents but I am loving the Kobo Glo. I would prefer a Kindle paperwhite (just from reading reviews) but am very happy with the Glo

Also probably to late, but I have had the Kobo Vox and now have the Kobo Arc
I would recommend getting the Kobo Arc if you ever get a chance,
It is very similar to a tablet, you can search the web, play games, download app's ect and of course load all your favorite epubs into it's library
It has a great battery life, 10+ if you are on it all day,, or a 2 - 3 week standby
I had the Kobo Vox and I absolutely HATED it, It would constantly freeze. The battery only last about 4 hours and the internet was very touch and go

I would highly recommend getting the Kobo Arc :)

Chiming in because I am an ereader addict....I recently got a Kobo Mini and it is Fabulous. I Love it!!! It would be better if it was lighted, so I had to order a Kobo Glo. I hope it will arrive today. I have a Paperwhite and love it, but automatic collection management using Calibre is much easier to do on the Kobo. (As easy as with my Sony T1, which I am selling to pay some of the cost of the Glo). Even though I have taken steps to allow collection management on the Paperwhite, it still involves extra steps and time to achieve (almost) the same result.

(P.S. don't bother asking how I do that with the Paperwhite, it involves a lot of device hacking).

I have a kobo wireless and just ran into an issue that i have no idea how to fix.
Turned it on to read and absolutely everything has disappeared, all my books plus the preloaded and the user guide.
Did a reset and a factory reset and still nothing. When i attach to computer with the usb and open calibre it is recognized but i get the message can not open database file.
This ereader is 3 - 4 years old and i have been thinking of getting a new one but finances are a little tight right now.
Can anyone help me?

Sounds like the internal SDCard in your Kobo has been corrupted somehow.  I would recommend doing a factory reset and installing the latest version of the firmware for it from the Kobo website.  That should fix your problem.

Thanks DarkGuyver for your help.
Contacted Kobo customer care and after some back and forth emails they tell me that is is probably defective and even though it is 3 years old and long past the warranty, they are going to replace it for me with an upgraded model. I can tell you that really made my day as i can't afford to buy a new one.
 :)

Thats excellent news!  I'm glad that Kobo is actually willing to send you a new replacement.

Kobo did the same for me a month ago. It's nice when companies do things like this even when they have no obligation to do so. :)

I hope you enjoy the new ereader. :D

You are lucky that Kobo replaced your e-reader even after warranty expired. They must have changed  management because my experience with them left me with a very sour experience...

I bought my Kobo Wi-Fi in April 2011 and it went beserk 1 month after the 1yr warranty expired-- after numerous back & forth emails, not getting any help from them,  I just gave up and bought the Kobo ARC .... it must have been a lemon because after numerous factory resets trying to download other apps unsuccessfully... I returned it, got a refund (should have known better and avoided the aggravation).. so same day I bought myself a Mini iPad and do not regret it... it's the best purchase ever. :) :) :)

yes, I was surprised at how it ended. and very happy.

i'd actually contacted them to simply ask if they knew to fix the problem with my firmware upgrade. i was planning on trying to fix the old one myself. :)
