Crashing/freezing kindle?
« on: October 18, 2012, 04:46 AM »
Has anyone else had the same problems?
I bought my kindle August 2011 and I am now on my 4th device due to freezing and the reset that you're suggested to perform doesn't work.
Amazon have been super helpful with giving me replacements, although I suspect I'm being giving refurbished devices, and all 4 have arrived the next day but its just annoying.
The latest device I have hasn't crashed, however, when I enter my password and go to the home screen I can still see the password box faintly underneath and when I select a book I can then faintly see the home screen.
From watching watchdog last night it would appear there's going to be an investigation into this.
Has anyone been replaced with a different type of device, such as a touch screen one?

It does indeed sound like that Amazon might have been giving you refurbished devices as replacements.  I would call Amazon up and talk to them about the problem before sending it away for another replacement.

I've heard this from other members. They gave up and switched (one has a paperwhite & one has a fire now).
But I agree with DG. If you're getting ghosting it's probably a refurbished.

I've had my Kindle Keyboard (K3) now for nearly 2 years, and haven't experienced any of the problems you noted. Having said that, my mother's Kindle crashed this week (first time in nearly 12 months), but she was able to reset it and it's been fine since.

Replacements are nearly ALWAYS with refurbished units, from what I understand.

Hopefully, Amazon will work to make things right for you!

Methinks I may opt for a paperwhite. Will see if I can at least have a discount on a new one...fingers crossed!

This was just mentioned on BBC Watchdog! It would be my worst nightmare. I must back everything up on it now.

For me, sometimes when i read quite a few pages, when i touch the screen to the next page (I had a Kindle Touch on may 2012 before paperwhite is launch) the screen is blank white, no words. I had to touch to previous page and sometimes it bring me back to the previous page and i continue to touch to the next page and the wording came back, sometimes it brings me back to the main menu page and i had to touch the book title and it brought me back to where i last stop or should i say last blank out on me....

I have heard from people who had kindle touch and also read reviews that it happen to die just after the warranty is up. I am looking for another alternative now, i don't want to wait till it die on me and i can't read any books or can't remember where i stop since it will be over a month of waiting for the new ereader to arrive.

This time around won't be getting another Kindle as i wanted a white ereader for some time, seem like Sony is my next choice. It would be good to have 2 ereader though, just in case something happen.

Mine was bought on sale for 33 dollars.  It handles a lot of formats including mobi.   It would make a great little second ereader.   I would say surf the net and look to see what ereaders are on sale dirt cheap.  I got this one off ShopNBC on clearance.

I watched bbc watchdog too and mine is a kindle 3. I'm stuffed now though because I have had my most recent replacement more than 3 months, although I did take out extra warranty so will have to contact the warranty company instead.

Also going through airport security can cause kindle users problems.

Papercuttery, I was thinking of looking at Sony now too, I' a fan of their products (phone, tv, music and laptop) and never had a problem.

I've also rediscover the love for Sony product, which is my dad's favourite too. I've gotten a Sansa Clip+ for mp3 player. But somehow, the volume of the music is quite soft even when tune to the max vol when i'm outdoor, not a problem for indoor, it's quite annoying that i can't hear my music loud enough (the music sound version maybe a problem too but i did find the loudest version already and on Sony, it's loud and better sound, max vol is 30 but 12 to 15 is enough for me to hear and enjoy) but Sansa serve me well for almost to a year since it's small and light to bring out before i change to Sony E series mp3 player, although it's not the best series but it's doing its purpose better than i thought.

Papercuttery, I've got a Sansa Fuze which was a;so quite quiet, if you reset the mp3 player to factory settings, and begin again with the North American settings, it is much louder. Hope this helps!
