Switching From Nook Color to Kindle Fire HD
« on: December 28, 2012, 08:07 AM »
For about 2 years now, I have been using a Nook Color without any real issues. I sideload almost all of my books (in Epub format). I thought it was time to retire my beloved Nook, so I asked Santa for a Kindle Fire HD since I tend to purchase more books from Amazon than I do from B&N. Well, I'm blonde, so my research of devices didn't cover the most obvious, basic difference that should've been a priority...The difference in file formats.  :-[

Here's my question:  What would be the best way to add my very large library to my new Kindle Fire HD?  I have Calibre and converted every Epub to Mobi, but I've never used it to sync a device before.  Would that be the best route?

Thanks in advance!!  :-*

If you've managed to convert the files from epub to mobi,  you should be able to connect the device to the computer, open calibre, and hit "send to device". I would say check for DRM, but calibre doesn't convert DRMed books, and since you said you've already got them converted to mobi, sounds like you've got the hard part done.

Now I'm saying this as a person who has never used a Kindle Fire, but it's how I sent my books to my Kindle Keyboard, Nook touch, and Nexus tablet, so that part should work the same. So I have no idea where the books will show up on your Fire.

I do believe you can also get epub apps though, and not even have to convert. Aldiko is a nice app, as is Moon+ Reader. You might even be able to get the Nook app on it, but I'm not sure on that one.

Thanks for the recommendation!

I wound up doing a google search and found the same directions you just gave.  I had read (before I converted my books to mobi) that in Calibre, when you switch the output to 'mobi', you should click the left hand column that says "mobi output" and make the Personal DOC section blank. That allows the books to show up in the Books library instead of the Documents library.  It all worked great, thankfully.

I did originally try sideloading my epubs on and downloaded an epub reader app, but all of my books wouldn't show up on the device. That's why I went through all of this hassle lol. I kinda wish I stuck with my Nook.  ;D

Also remember that Kindle can see what you have on your ereader so be careful out there.   Besides the problems with proprietary  book files that is the  main reason I wouldn't buy one.  They can remove books from your device at will so back up everything on there when you buy from t hem.

I'm not too worried about them seeing anything, I tend to keep the ereader's wifi off.  And I'm a bit OCD, so I always download my books after buying them and make 50 million back ups lol.

They can see everything on your Kindle? I always have my wi-fi off too, saves the battery. I think they can only remove your files that you bought through them from your Amazon acct. (thus deleting it off your Kindle if you try to sync it to your acct.) or they can delete your acct. or suspend it making you lose all your digital files through them. I don't think they can see what ebooks you have ON your kindle though if you haven't bought it from them...? And if you did the transfer through computer option, I don't think they can take it off that way either.

I think any other store can do that too (delete files/acct), but the thing with Amazon is that Amazon HAS done it.. plenty of times. That said, it hasn't happened to me and I always use the "transfer through computer" option on Amazon so that I do have a copy of it on my computer as well for backup. I think that violates some of the TOU though ::)

I don't see what difference it makes if the books came from Amazon. They could have come from Fictionwise(well up til a week or so ago), or all romance ebooks, or any number of publisher's sites like Loose Id, Samhain, Ellora's Cave. Nowhere in your Kindle TOS does it say all books MUST come from amazon. MOST of my books come from other sources, because I don't like having to strip the DRM just to read it on a different device or share with a friend.

It's not so  much other sources as people who don't think and mark their ebooks that they stripped the DRM.  Some do.  Not sure why unless they want to give the FBI a clear trail to their front door.

They control the device unless you are using a USB only.  I surely wouldn't want to be the first news story of "Pirates caught by Amazon"   I know someone who was just complaining that Amazon had deactivated his device and he had a  major  headache with it.  Not deactivted for Pirating but for other problems

No, I think Philo was pointing out that IF you buy your books from Amazon, they have control over the book thus having control over the books ON your Kindle. Because they can decide to pull the books (deleting it off your acct. & off your Kindle if you sync via wi-fi)  But like I pointed out, if you use the transfer via computer option, you can have a copy of the book on your computer. It's not that your books HAVE to come from Amazon, it's that the books that DO come from Amazon, Amazon gets a final say whether you get to keep them or not.

Also, I have read some TOU from these books and a lot of them won't let you have them on extra devices/other computers/back up sources so yes, backing them up on other devices such as a computer, laptop, SD card, CD, external hard drive, etc... actually VIOLATES the TOU... which I find absolutely ridiculous!

I am no expert on the Kindle Fire, but I did sideload books to four (yes, four!) different units over the holidays; two regular Kindle Fires, and two Kindle Fire HDs. Weirdly, none of them were the same. One unit was recognized on Calibre, but the others were not (and, I'm running the latest version).

I can attest to removing the [Pdoc] tag and RECONVERTING your mobi files. If not, books will show up in Docs instead of Books.

I started out just sideloading books, but then realized it might be easier using Calibre's Save to Disk function. Select multiple books, then "Save to Disk", then "Save only MOBI... to a single directory", and select the books folder on the drive where your Fire is connected.

Hope that makes sense!

As an update: I first sent all of my books (via USB) to my Kindle Fire HD with Calibre....But then I started having issues with metadata getting messed up and random deletion of books off of my Calibre Library. I had my library very, very, overly organized, so Calibre and the Kindle are currently on my sh*t list right now lol.  :banghead:

I've given up on syncing my library with Calibre for now.  Instead, I'm going to continue using my SkyDrive and Dropbox and download the books from there when I want them....Until I've gained the patience to begin the headache process all over again.  ;)

I bought a Nook Color way before the Kindle Fire came out to use with my magazines, so now I have both the Nook Color, the Fires and a few Kindles.  The beautiful thing about these tablets is that you could install the apps of the different book suppliers.  You can install the Nook app and read your Nook books and magazine subscriptions directly from the app without converting the books.   The same goes for Kobo app.  I used the Getjar app to get the Nook app since it's not in the Kindle store.  Here's a link with instruction, good luck.

I used the getjar app to get the Nook app. I haven't touched my Nook Color since I finally figured out the Kindle Fire, so I might sell it on Ebay.  I loved my Nook Color, so I keep holding off lol.

Same here.  I still have my Nook Color in a beautiful Oberon cover...somewhere.  I might sell it as well.  It's getting outdated.  I have been using only the Kindle Paperwhite and my iPad.
