Which E-reader are you using?
« on: October 13, 2011, 11:48 PM »
Hi, I wanted to know what is the most bought e-reader and the best place to do so is... here :D

If you have comments or like to expand more about your selection or the reasons - you're welcome! Your experience might help other users when they consider buying an e-reader. By the way, if you have two or more different e-readers you're certainly encouraged to vote for each of them! 8)  (Yes, the vote limit was modified. Much thanks to Mr. Admin!)

Any comments about the poll are also welcome.

All the best and thanks! :)

I got for present Kindle Fire from my company 16 GB.

The Kindle Fire is not the best tablet I've seen this year, but I have to give credit to Amazon for seeing something that no other manufacturer--not even Apple--was able to grasp. When you look at the gap between what tablets are capable of doing, and what people actually use them for, you'll find that most people just want to be entertained. I'm also a little surprised to see that Amazon hasn't included much in the way of parental controls on the Kindle Fire. Users are given a password option for the screen lock, and a password lockout option for the Wi-Fi connection, but there are no detailed controls for limiting playback of locally stored age-restricted material, or mature game content.

It's a beautifully constructed bit of kit: twist it and it barely creaks – the matte-black soft-touch plastics at the rear feel robust and feel grippy.

I was thinking of getting the Kindle Fire for my kids. As for parental controls, there's a certain way you can set it up. There's a video on it here:

Unfortunately, you have to buy a subscription to Kindle Freetime. I also don't like how Amazon let's you 1-click anything without having the extra log-in security measure. When you go to check your invoice for what you just purchased, you get the extra log-in. :unamused: So I can 1-click away, but I can't check what I 1-clicked without logging in. That's ridiculous IMO, but this helps prevent that problem somewhat if you are leery about kids having access to your Amazon acct. or access to age-inappropriate content on your Fire.

Ok, is it overkill, if on Black Friday I bought another Kobo for 50 bucks??!!?? It came with a free light, couldn't resist!  Now I have 5 (really 6, but my first one doesn't work anymore).

There were some postings which says the Nook is good. What are your reasons? What would you recommend?

Were the postings on this thread? Look at the dates. The recommendations are several years old. There are many reasons not to buy a Nook. For one thing, I don't think you can download them to your computer, which for me is huge. You also can't adjust formatting or add fonts. Which is why I have a stack of Kobo ereaders.

But for a person who just wants to read, not fiddle around, I feel a Kindle is the best choice. They certainly have the best ebook store. I do get books from both Amazon and Kobo, both can be downloaded to my PC. The Kindle hardware is great, though the Kobo is much more customizable.

You really can't go wrong with a Kindle. For a first time ereader owner, I would totally recommend any of them, though my preference would be the Paperwhite, as it is lighted. The basic Kindle is not lighted, and the screen tech is about 4 years old. The Paperwhite has the up to date screen tech.

Thank you. That helps a lot. May I know if the kindle paper white allows you to open different formats? I am currently using the iPad to read books in ePub format.

"Amazon does not make it easy to read ePubs on your Kindle Fire. While the capability is not available by default, though, you can read your collection of ePubs on your Kindle Fire simply by downloading an e-Pub-compatible reader to your device. While specific instructions may vary depending on which reader app you use, here are the essential basics you need to know about reading ePubs on your Kindle Fire."

another thought...

I also convert epubs to mobi format using calibre and email them to my kindle email address

I have multiple kindles (paperwhite, hd 7, app on android phone) so I email the converted mobi to my kindle address.  this way the book is in my kindle library and I can read it wherever/however. also the devices sync so if i read by the pool with the paperwhite then go inside and pick up the hd that night it knows where i am in the book. ;)

I believe the paperwhite requires amazon azw3 or mobi format. where the kindle tablets allow for the different library apps to read epubs direct.

you can check your kindle email address under the settings tab on Manage your Content and Devices or your amazon account.  You can also set who you allow to email stuff to your kindle by which email address you will accept documents from.

I use my Samsung Tablet for most reading and my phone for when I'm out and about. I have them synced so that I have access to the same books, bookmarks and reading positions. I use FBReader as my reading app. It uploads books to my Drive account and syncs the reading position. I also allows me to sort by my own collections, and read the metadata.  It can also read az3 , epub, mobi, pdf and a few more I've never used. Available in the Play Store free and a very cheap premium version, which I have. I think they are releasing an IOS version this year. I've retired my Sony ereader and hardly use calibre now. Love it.

Kindle is very easy to use. I just replaced my first Kindle touch after 5 years of reading - nearly 400 books. It was the first Kindle Touch and it still works just fine, I just wanted something with a better display and light. Now I am using Kindle Voyage and I love it so far, the resolution and automatic light sensor are awesome.

I am now the proud parent of a Kobo H2O .  had to replace my Kobo touch after 5 years and over 1300 books read on it.  ( was more, but I had to do a factory setting and lost the count, due to a book I loaded sideways it spat the dummy over)

I'm currently on the Kindle Paperwhite (5th generation)! I love my kindle! I'd be lost without it!  I love the light weight feeling I can hold it for hours and not feel like it's too heavy (like the kindle fire or my samsung tablet they start getting too heavy after a while)  i love that i can put THOUSANDS of books on it and still have plenty of space for more!  the best feature is the built in light.. no more having to use a bedside table, book lights.. etc!!  and no glares when i take it out into the sunshine!

I use Calibre's e-reader and I use my laptop.  It may not be as convenient, but I don't have to convert books before reading them.  (Calibre's e-reader takes all formats, as far as I know.) :)
