Which eReader is better?
« on: April 26, 2011, 04:12 AM »
I've been thinking about buying an 'eReader' because I changed sides and now I'm an eco-friendly bookworm although I don't hold anything against people who buy actual books.
Well, I was just wondering which is better: the Amazon Kindle or the Sony Reader?
Thanks! :)

I know that it is a different device altogether, but is anyone using the ipad? How do you rate it??

I have an iPad 2, I've used it to read eBooks and sometimes it's a bit difficult to convert books and have them look good if you don't have the original formats that the iPad uses. If you already have one it's good for reading books because the screen size alone feels like if you're reading a read book. If anybody is looking for an eReader though, I don't suggest buying an iPad just to serve that purpose because it's makes no sense spending $500+ for it just for that purpose.

Does anybody here have a Kobo? How does it rate compared to other eReaders out there? I was thinking of getting the new Sony WiFi eReader that's coming out in October but I want to wait until people have reviewed it. It's a bit difficult to find one since I live outside the US and most of the high rated ones are US based eReaders.

I still use my Kobo eReader.... I had never had an eReader before and didn't want to spend a lot of money on something I knew so little about so I bought a Kobo because it was super cheap (about $80) from Borders. I have been using it ever since and while I plan on buying a newer touch/color eReader I have never had a problem with the Kobo. It allows you to use SD cards where you can add books onto the SD card from your computer and insert into the eReader, it has wifi and you can direct download from the Kobo site. While it's not the prettiest or fanciest thing in the world, it's cheap, easy to use and I've never had a problem with it. I also have an ipod touch that I use for my ebooks which allows me to connect to my computer via wifi and download books through Stanza or you can download apps (such as ibooks, Kobo, etc) add purchase books that way.
I've never used a kindle, nook or sony ereader so i don't know how they compare.

Thank you, you've put me more at ease about maybe buying it even as a back up. I'm going to check out a comparison list to see what else I have as an option being an international user.

Don't restrict yourself to just eReaders.  Also look at tablets so you can use it to read your ebooks and do other things.

Tablets would be the smartest move, especially since the prices are coming down. Just to update,on another note, Merch replaced my Literati with a LOOKBOOK hope its works

@Fleur: I already have a sony reader so was wanting to go foor something with more features and options. Upgrading to a tablet makes sense so was looking at the ipad.

However, considering its size nd weight was wondering if its suitable for prolonged reading.

I have two tablets (iPad, Blackberry Playbook) and the iPad's most comfortable between them for me at least when it comes to having to hold it for a long time. My hand get tired after a while but I think that's expected when holding something with the same surface area as an iPad or even the Playbook.

You can do what I did, I went to the store and talked to one of the workers there in the electronics department and they let me play around with the store demo and get a feel for each one of them. That way you can get a feel for all the options tablet-wise.

I use an I pad with a non glare screen protector on it.

It has the Nook app and the Kindle app and also you can read books in ibooks.

So far I love it!

I like Kindle, personally. Easy to use, compatible with lots of formats. The Kindle Collection Manager makes organization easy. Also, they're replaced for free if broken or defective. Mine was stepped on after 3 months, and Amazon replaced it free of charge. No glare on screen, and easy on the eyes when reading for long periods of time.

Before you buy a tablet or kindle or whatever; you have to first consider if you want e ink or not. E ink is supposed to look like a book and its easier on the eyes and if you get a tablet it would be similar to reading on a computer screen all day.

How much does an iPad cost? And a Motorola Xoom (in the US)?

Both of them start at $499, the Xoom can go up to $599 if you get the Wi-Fi + 3G w/o a Verizon plan. The iPad can go up to $820 maximum depending on how you customize it (Size, Wi-Fi, 3G). This is from Apple/Motorola websites so I'm sure you can get it a bit cheaper if you buy them from a retail store probably.

Same here. Sometimes the premium charged is high enough to think twice. I have been considering the ipad wifi for sometime now. The 3G+wifi is a bit too steep. But then, 3G has its own benefits.

I love my Kindle. I will be buying the new Kindle Tablet when it comes out! I also have a Pandigital novel on which I watch movies and play games. It has nook and kobo apps but would much read on Kindle.

I bet if they sold Kindle here it'd be US$ 300+ :( Even cell phones r too expensive. iPhone & iPad cost like US$ 1500 :o
For me most apple products are at a premium of around US$ 200-300. What I do, is ask friend in the US to get it for me or wait until I am traveling and then pick up what I want.

I live outside US too and my only option for now is Kindle. And after reading some reviews, I think it's a nice ereader (with the Pearl tech). ;) And for the size, it really looks like the best choice to me. :)

[If you are adventurous enough or had a previous online buying experience, you could try ebay. I mean, price-wise.]

A Kindle is $600 USD where I'm from and it doesn't even work properly here (book availability, etc) it's  just ridiculous. Buying Apple products are even worse, the iPhone 4 goes for $1000+ USD. I never bother myself buying US based products internationally, I get them from the US and have them ship it or sky box it where I live. If I'm travelling I just let someone buy it and keep it for me.

Me too.. A tablet seems soooooo GOOOOOOD.  :D

BUT, a big but, with the reviews on battery life and screen capabilities (since it's either LCD or TFT only... eye-straining) I would really like opinions of those who own(ed) one and which one you think is worth investing into. One being reasonably cheap (I mean, $700+ in an iPad is just folly! Sorry iPad users - and the MID, ePad, aPad and the likes look beyond crappy).

Also, which screen size you think is best?  8)
