Hello, I'm new to reading Harry Potter fanfics (although I've read quite a few in the last couple of days). I was wondering if anyone can recommend some good fics to me. I prefer long, well written fics, and prefer to stick with canon pairings (or no pairing at all for Harry).

Plots I like:

Going back in time to change events
Snape as Harry's guardian/mentor
Sirius as Harry's guardian
Harry and Draco being friends (no slash)

Any help is appreciated!

P.S I'm not a fan of Dumbledore or Weasley bashing but I can put up with it if the story is convincing enough.

I'm looking for a Harry/Ginny fic and I hope someone here can help me.  I don't remember much about the story, just one particular scene has stayed with me.  It's an After the Final Battle fic.

I remember Harry having difficulty sleeping and spends a lot of his nights on the Burrow's couch.  Arthur discovers this and talks to Harry about things.  Harry ends up crying and apologizing for being so weak and for being a coward.  Arthur comforts Harry and gets him to sleep by spending the night watching over Harry, telling him stories of the Weasley siblings until Harry drifts off.  I want to say, later the next day, Arthur mentions to Molly how shocked he is to hear Harry believes himself to be weak and a coward after everything he'd done.

That's all I can remember.  Someone out there has read this, I know I didn't dream it!

2)  I cant remember the title or author but its hermione centric...she cast a spell on herself (post war) where she is needed the most .she lands in harry's apartment but his promiscuous life makes her heartbroken and leaves and find friendship with malfoy who loves her.there is no counter spell. does anyone remember this?

3)hermione parents get kidnapped before 6th year but she lets harry know of their plan but in the end her parents are killed and she will be kidnapped by snape and mind change her thinking herself as lily.harry finds them and takes the elder wand from albus and save hermione and snape mind is destroyed in the process

Give her some encouragement and she may post what she has already written faster and write some new stuff for her legion of fans from the old GE.

I don't know if anyone even remember this fanfic, but it was a Lily/James story based on the Meteor Garden/Boys over Flower plot line? It's very old and I don't even know if she finished it but I'd like to even just reread some of the old parts of it because I absolutely loved it.

Fallout was awesome, but I can't remember if it's as angsty as Water. Read it ages ago. :S

As for the published authors, I think it's got something to do with the whole publishing/preparing the book process. I mean, their editors will make them rewrite stuff over and over again. While you don't see that with fanfic authors. They don't have anyone telling them you gotta do "this and that" differently. Betas suggest, and help out, but the author's word is the law.
