When I was a newbie I took the HEA for granted.  Then I read Toye, The Elusive Mr. Cullen (there were a couple more that I can't remember the name of) and I was so shocked that there was no HEA!  I still enjoyed the stories but I lost my innocence.   :'(
I don't remember what my first non-HEA was, but I check now first.

I read a lot of mysteries that don't always have an HEA - mostly Patricia Cornwall.  Though since I discovered Fanfic? Yes, really hard to read anything else now.

Yeah, that makes sense.  I don't know what it is with these 3-part stories.  I used to read Kathleen Woodiwiess stories that were 800 pages long.  Now everything is the size of a Harlequin Romance with a big book price tag.  And they wonder why I don't buy a lot of books anymore.  :-\

I knew we really had the same taste in reading materials. i love woodiwiss too! Yup, i've stopped buying Harlequin Romance too since i find  it too expensive for such a short book. Thank god for the internet and fanfiction! I have other stuff to rread now.  :)

Thanks for starting this Ella!

Toye was awesome, and I believe it was the first non-HEA I read as well. When I got to the end, I probably sat there, mouth hanging open in shock because I just wasn't expecting that. I kept expecting him to fall for her lol.

Does it bother anyone else that they're turning all these stories into trilogies (at minimum)?  I read the published version of Finding Bella (1st part published as Slave, 2nd part is Need [I think]), and she's turning that story into 4 books publishing one a year.  I'm not sure I'll make it to the end.  The Fifty Shades trilogy didn't bother me because I could read the entire fanfiction version.  I still bought the books, but at least I didn't have to wait forever to know how the story ends.  I haven't read the published version of The University of Edward Masen, but found out it was more than one published book when the 2nd one came out.  It irritates the life out of me.  I wait patiently (well, mostly) for fanfiction to update, but at least I'm not paying for that.

Okay, rant over.

I just read today there they are squeezing another book out of University of Edward Masen. I haven't read the fics (or the second pubbed book) so I don't know where it cut off, or if the writer is writing all new stuff.

I had so much trouble with that one.  I find I like my fanfic to be in first person.  And POV's can switch.  I just got bored and left it.  I think I feel more attached to a story if it is me - first person.  Especially if I am Bella.

For a while they were selling these monthly kindle books with all of the stories for the month and they were only $16 or $17 for something like 6 stories.  I loved it.  But then they quit.  I guess they weren't making enough.  :'(

And frankly?  A lot of this Fanfic stuff is better.  ;)

Hmm.  I may have to read it.  I've read a couple of OS with twisted endings where Edward kills Bella and you don't expect it.  I can deal with a OS without an HEA.  But those long stories that end up with no HEA?  Yeah, all that time and energy?  I got to have an HEA LOL!

From what I remember, this one was a really quick read, you should give it a shot if you don't mind the non-Hea :)

I'm also having trouble getting away from fanfic.  I have a book club and for the last year I haven't read any of our chosen books.  I'm too busy reading about E/B.  I also can't admit that to anyone in my book club!

I believe it's new stuff.

Oh ladies, I am not sure I can keep up with another forum with my schedule but I will try.

Although I wasn't crazy over all the Dante stuff, I still thoroughly enjoyed UoEM. The third book which was never planned until we begged him, will be all new stuff.

We have a store here that sells used books and some new ones that i guess were not sold abroad. The cost is half the price of a brand new one in the big bookstores. However, my husband and kids have been complaining that i am using up all the bookshelves in the house with my "bad books". Am glad to discover fanfic and the ipad so now all my books are in soft copy.  I do miss the experience of holding a physical book, turning the pages, the feel and smell of the paper so if a really favorite author of mine comes up with a book, i buy a paperback copy. So i've probably bought only 5 paperbacks this year

Yeah, I've got a dirty mind.  LOL!

I like EPOV as well.  Many times when there is a choice in a story of BPOV or EPOV? I go for the EPOV.  That said Stephanie's Bella was a lot like me when I was a teen.  Head in the book, quiet and shy.  So I tend to relate to BPOV.

You do know you can hide the harlequins behind the other books on the bookshelves - right?  My shelves are all 2 books deep.

Fortunately for me, my husband shares my interest in reading, though we don't read much of the same stuff.

I was the exact opposite of the spectrum than steph's Bella. Maybe that is why I usually dislike her in most of the fics.  It is not that it was bad writing. I just cannot relate and just go huh? Why did you do that ?  Maybe it's the Scorpio in me as well. I am also an ENTJ. Yet, here I am, years later, still plodding through. At least I am reading something. I have always hated it. Magazines, nothing would hold my attention. Who says you cannot teach old dogs new tricks ?

Oh yea, I want an HEA. I can read all the angst in the middle and I have not read one that was a hard limit that I had to flounce. I flounce for lack of plot, or it seems a 5 year wrote it. If I start to read one that doesn't have an HEA, please someone warn me !

I can see that.  I was an INTJ or was it INTP.  When I finally took the test, I was older and in the middle on most of the questions.  I kept picking jobs where I had to be outgoing.  Messed with my introverted side.  So now most people don't believe it when I tell them I'm still kind of shy.   ^-^

My husband mostly read car magazines but in the past 2 years found he liked reading non-fiction, which i am definitely not into. I have been reading since i was in my teens so i have quite a number of books, saving only my favorite ones through the years. It is already 2 book deep in our bookshelves and his and my kids stuff can't even begin to cover my stuff.  ;D. I am still gathering the courage to sort through it all and keep my ultra favorite ones and giveaway the rest... Hopefully this will get done during my lifetime...
