Anyone know how to read penal codes?
« on: December 17, 2012, 07:06 PM »
So I just found out that someone my work recently hired was convicted of aggravated sexual assault on a victim younger than 13. The penal code they listed was TEXAS PENAL CODE 22.021(A)(2)(B).

I tried looking it up, but there are so many a's 2's and b's on the text that I don't understand which one it is. Does anyone know how to read these?

The Texas Penal Code is only one code. The other is the chapter, section, etc.
Here you have the Chapter and section you are looking for:

Thank you for your reply and link. I ended up asking a friend who practices law in South Texas. He said that all it meant was that he was convicted for contact of a sexual nature to a child younger than 14 years old. I was hoping that the code number and letters would provide more detail about what expressly he was accused or convicted of, but no dice.

That seems bad enough even without details doesn't it?

Oh definitely. Just wondered if it could have been something innocent like a hug (I once had a teacher that was under scrutiny for hugging his pupils and locking them in rooms with him to talk about his marriage and things like that, but he never sexually assaulted anyone), or if it was more along the lines of definite sexual activity and to what degree. I guess I'm morbid that way, wanting to know the details of just how bad it was, since I have to be in close proximity with him at work now.
