Need a help with a personal awkwardness
« on: October 03, 2015, 07:44 AM »
So, I just wanted to know what should I do to cure this phobia of not letting my family know about my life outside of their presence. I mean, I am quite different in the company of my friends than what I am with my family and it feels odd and uncomfortable when even hints of that me make it to any of my family members.

Got any advice?

Hello sweetheart

Try to don't feel like that. You are what you are: one with friends, one with family, one at work... You are the same, with all your sides. Your family and friends knows you, or if they don't, it's time they start to know you.

Be happy how you are, it's you and feel that you are important ... for yourself

Th only thing I can recommend is maybe figure out why you feel like you can't interact with your family the same way you do with your friends.

I understand the disconnect in a fashion but at the same time they're your family and they should love you always.

I don't think you're all that unusual.  We all have different sides to us and the part of us we show depends on how we feel about the people we're with at the time.  As a professional, I always feel that there are parts of me I can't show my clients and even my friends who are in the same line of work.  My family gets my softer side, although I think we're always a little afraid of disappointing our parents and don't let them know about certain aspects of our lives or filter certain aspects of our lives.  There are a lot of things I don't want my children to know about from my youthful exploits.  Let them come up with their own ideas of how to get into trouble!  The person who is most likely to see all my different sides is my husband, because I feel safest with him.  Not everyone can say that about their spouse, but luckily, I can.

So, is there more to what you are asking?  Or do you just need to accept yourself as a normal, multi-faceted person?

That's part of what I sought. If you have advice for what to do to be more self-accepting (that worked), then please share.

It is not unusual, often friends are more accepting than family,  and family have higher expectations.  My family have no idea who I am ,   I am the odd one out as I don't fit their mould,  But I learned to live with it, and what they don't know they can't mock me about.  I have a husband and kids who love me unconditionally and know me,  So, it took a while,  but I am happy.

My advise is to think about why you feel you cannot be yourself with your family,  I feel it is probably self preservation
I am not a complete idiot, some parts are missing    :)
