Rant: burning bras to liberate breasts

Rant:  burning bras to liberate breasts

I was reading Jill Marie Landis' Tiki Goddess Mystery and I came across a paragraph that she wrote that really bothered me.  It was:

At least her folks’ generation boasted real hippies who fought for causes like world peace, ending the draft, or at the very least, burning bras to liberate breasts.

Say what?  "...fought for causes... at the very least, burning bras to liberate breasts"
What kind of flippant remark is that?  Do women under 55 really believe that the Women's Liberation Movement was about Liberating Breasts, and was a cause that was fought for?

First of all, the whole "burning bras" thing is a myth.  They didn't. They dumped them into trash cans.

"The symbolic act of tossing those clothes into the trash can was meant as a serious critique of the modern beauty culture, of valuing women for their looks instead of their whole self."

"Women's liberation as a movement works for social and economic rights while seeking ways to free women from oppression and gender discrimination."

We've come a long way, baby, thanks to those breast liberators.  But we're certainly not there yet.  While equal pay for equal work may be a lot closer than it was in the '60's & '70's, pay is still not equal.  And that glass ceiling is still there in many places.

And s.e.x.u.a.l equality, hah!    "... with the 1970s ... bralessness and the s.e.x.u.a.l revolution... somehow... meant primarily being more s.e.x.u.a.l.l.y available to men, and still doing all the laundry, cooking and house-cleaning...."   And now it seems that teenage girls have no excuse for not putting out.  If they don't want to lay on the backs, they can drop to their knees.  And what exactly do THEY get out of dropping to their knees?  Is this s.e.x.u.a.l equality?

Today's women have no idea how bad it was, and since it's nowhere near as bad today, except for young girls, they're not motivated to push until there is true equality.  And since women today have no idea how bad it was, a female writer can negate and trivialize the rights of all women that her grandmother's generation fought for  --  and it sure as hell wasn't the right to liberate their breasts.  (But, lord, I do feel sorry for the young girls today.)

Anyhow, my 2 cents, and about all that it's worth.

Boy isn't that the truth! But at least we got the pill! It wasn't covered under our insurance until recently, while V. I. A. G. R. A.  was covered from the beginning. Wonder who was in charge of that decision? *snort*

If they only understood the times!
They hear the 'Free Love' slogan some bandied about and stop there.

And how about the doctors, patting us on the head and telling US what was wrong with us instead of listening, how many died because of a male doctor that was an ass. I lost a sister to brain cancer because 'she was lookin for attention' after I was 'lookin for attention' with rheumatic fever. But the boys get a 'hangnail' and 'oh we gotta check it out.'
Those women were often ostracized for trying to make an important point.

Exactly! My aunt had 5 hysterectemys! 5! How on earth is that even possible? Even if they took 1 thing at at time it is only 4? I'm baffled, but the kicker is that she died of an aneurysm after the last one. I thought my mom was going to kill that doctor.

Yeah, any female that complained about anything was 'lookin for attention'.
Remember when a hysterectomy was the cure-all for every female complaint after the woman had 1 or 2 kids.

And how about the condesending smiles if a female opened her mouth and voiced an opinion about anything other then home and family.

And the vast majority of working women, and there has always been a vast majority of working women, were making little more than minimum wage -- which was about $1.25 back then.  And there were probably just as many single moms and female major bread-winners back then as there are now.

We were s.e.x objects, servants, or subordinates to all the males in our life.  Working life was fraught with s.e.x.u.a.l harrassment.  You were a servant at home.  And although you were subordinate to your husband, you probably were more of an assistant, you know the one who actually takes care of everything so the one assisted  doesn't have to do it.

All that and you were supposed to look good while doing it.  You know heels and pearls and the little apron that you took off before you answered the door.  (Of course not everyone was Mrs. Cleaver.)

And when Women's Lib took off they were all labeled lesbian and accused of wanting to subjugate men.  Many were lesbian, many were not, but orientation wasn't the issue.  And what part of the word equality did the men not understand?

I wasn't political back then, and I'm not now, but her words must have ticked me off more than I realized.  I guess the young can never fully appreciate what those older have lived through.  It was treating it like a joke and like it was of no account, I think, that got me.  Those women who got out there and did accomplish something deserve more respect.

Don't mind helping people.  Do mind being taken advantage of.

Ah you hit the nail on the head with this subject.
I wonder a lot today why on earth don't the women band together and freaking force the goddamn males in their place? I mean it. The last I've read about statistical data there were 9 women per 1 man. And that was ages ago, I'm sure numbers are even more in our favor now. So, wth? What's it gonna take it for us to drag our heads out of our asses and act? ;/
I'm all for matriarchate, seems only fair after living for so damn long under the thumb of the "stronger" sex.

Some are conditioned from birth. My mom raised strong independent women like her mom & dad did. I had 2 children and bought a house on my own before getting married. Part of my family said I was a slut. My mom said I would make an honest man out of hubby eventually, which I did lol. But I never ever thought I should get married.

Kudos, drypen!
(Yeah, a man is a lover, but a woman is a slut.  NOT)

Yes, there were many, many strong, independent women.  Always have been, always will be.
Really, how else was the world brought to order and, at least, partially civilized?
But it wasn't till those wonderful women in the '60's-'70's banded together that women started setting things straight.   It's unfortunate that we have stopped short.

(It probably took so long because of the deep-seeded female reluctance to bruise the delicate male ego    :P ).

Most memorable male quote from a bygone age:
"Now, don't you worry your pretty little head about it."     ;D

It really is. What happened to those women and their offspring? Why didn't they teach their children? This is something that should have grown exponentially, instead it has stalled! Why is that I wonder.

And guys usually don't respect girls/women who do this.  The guys usually just look at the girls as 'desperate', call them derogatory names, ridicule the girls to their 'bros', etc. all the while taking what's being offered.

The sexual revolution was supposed to empower women but I think it just made women look 'easy' in a lot of men's eyes.

And I'm concerned, now, that men can't use sex as a tool to manipulate/control like they used to (because they realize women have just as strong sexual desires/needs as guys do) so men are using master/submissive situations in which to regain 'control' in the bedroom, which in my opinion is just an excuse for some guys to be abusive 'control-freaks'.
What makes me sad is that there are too many women who feel they don't deserve to be treated any better.  Perhaps they were abused all their lives and feel they have to put up with being treated like they're not even human beings.

We've come a long way but we still have a long way to go.  And as the previous generation paves the way for the next generation, hopefully we can help guide the young women of today so they can make a better tomorrow.
