Writing an essay/composition — Plagiarism
« on: July 19, 2012, 07:35 AM »
Hello everyone!

I want to ask if we are allowed to copy a small phrase from books to add to our writing? It's just the phrase, not copying the idea of the book.

Is it counted as plagiarism?

If you just quoted it, then no, it doesn't count as plagiarism. And as long as you give a proper credits.

As lexie said, proper credit is needed. I don't really know how it would work in fiction writing, but in academic writing, proper citation methods such as APA style referencing are usually used. There are plenty of referencing styles available out there, You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login a list.

And here's a simple overview on proper citations:

You can either work it into the story line or source it.

If you work it into the story line, your character might say something like "As Dresden says in Butcher's books '“Yeah, um. I’m a wizard. I meddle. It’s what we do.'  No.  Really. That is what we do.  To do anything else goes against our nature."

or you source it with a footnote.  You can do that with footnotes or end notes.   Or make a credit page with a list of the included quotes and the sources of them.
