Tablet Virus?
« on: November 19, 2013, 05:29 PM »
Can anyone help me understand why I'm suddenly getting a message about a virus whenever I visit certain webpages on my tablet? PTS for instance. I'll click a page, and as it opens, a window pops up telling me my android device needs scanned, and when that window pops up, it's very hard to get rid of.

It's happened to me on PTS, as well as at least two other sites (I don't remember what sites, sorry!) I have downloaded a scanner from the Google store and it says everything is fine, so why am I getting these pop ups on my tablet? (Nexus 7, using Google Chrome)

If it's a pop-up webpage that you are getting then it's probably a fake prompt, which has no cause for concern if your antiviral software scans come back clean.

I agree.  I got the same thing earlier today... both on my samsung galaxy tab II phone and on the volunteer work pc..... I ignored the prompt on both lmao!  My phone has norton on and the work pc is covered... plus it's a police computer ;)  PCYC - Police Citizens Youth Centre  :)

Always ignore that sort of crap, that pops up like that... it's always a fake  ;D:-* :-* :-*

Exactly, these sort of pop-up internet brower windows have been around ever since the internet has been available commercially.  They are design to take you (if you do click on them) to a site which will infect your computer/tablet with viruses/malware.  If you encounter them always close the pop-up.

Thanks. I only get them on my Tablet, I guess because I have a popup blocker on my computer browser? I wish Chrome mobile let me customize it a bit in the same way. You can get ad/popup blockers on the Mozilla android app, I just don't like that app as much, it's SLOW.

You can download ad/pop-up blockers from the Google Playstore but some of them require you to have your android device rooted.

Yeah that's more work/risk than I feel like putting into it, hehe!

Maybe next year when I upgrade to the newest model I'll root it.

Word of advice, if you don't know how to root it, best try it out on your old one first before doing it to your new one and completely stuffing it up.... that way, you won't feel sorry ruining your new one... and be more confident to root your new one.

Cheers!  :-* :-*

That is the best piece of advice I've heard so far.  Rooting an android device is not a simple task, and I wouldn't recommend amaturers to do it to their device right away.  Best to do allot of research on different rooting methods, find one that seems easy enough for you to follow then try it out on a old device.  As you can serious mess up an android device during a 1st attempt at rooting it.

Well my husband took the old one, so still not rooted. Loving the new one though!
