Hi, my name is JJ
« on: March 26, 2012, 12:04 PM »
Hello, thank you for having me.  This sure looks like a friendly place.  I'm an avid reader and found this site while looking for a free book for my Kindle.  My husband got me the Kindle for Christmas and at first, I didn't like it. I'm old, and used to having a book in my hands, not a metal "thing."  But now I love it. I'm visually handicapped and being able to increase the font size is wonderful.

I want to give a big thank you to all the wonderful people that share their "stash" with people, it's great!

Hi JJ,
Welcome to the STP community!

Nice to meet you! I'm happy you found us, we have a lot in common! I'm also old & visually impared! I bought my first ereader after reading several books on my Kindle for PC.
When you get a moment please read the following threads & hints that have been put together for all members:

Some tricks for searching: Use either the book, series or author and change it to "entire forum". To bring up Advanced Search enter just 1 letter. Also putting "quotation marks" around the name, author or series will help narrow the search as well. Searching is tricky but do your best. You're right! Everyone here is very nice as I'm sure you'll find out.

Do you see a thread you want to follow? Use the notify button. It will email you when something is posted in that thread!

Downloading a book? Please take a moment to click the Thank You button. It's the least you can do for the kind person who took the time & spent their money to upload it. :)

If you don't remember who to contact and you would like to get our attention, just start a post "Requesting Mr. Admin/Mod Help Please" and one of us will be along shortly.:D

Thank you Drypen. I read those threads before I posted, I don't like to step on toes.

That was quite a list of authors who opted out.  That is one area where my eyesight really messes me up, lists. I have double vision and other things going on so I will be taking it slow in here.

I did the same as you, got the free Kindle for PC and fell in lust. I still use the PC more than the handheld version, but the handheld is great for when I leave the house. It's been a frustrating two years coming to grips with my funky vision, but books really are my pleasure, thank goodness there are so many to choose from.

I am pretty familiar with how to search but thank you for the tip on using the quotation marks. I have already set my profile up to follow threads I am active in, and I'm sure over time I will get used to the more constant poster's name.  I got a kick out of the name, Mr. Admin. I have a website myself, where I am the Hostess.  :D

I am really new to ebook sharing places, just found one a few weeks back and was dumbfounded at the wealth available.  But was dismayed to discover that some ornery people are trying to shut them down.  There is always a fox in the hen house, I suppose.

Thanks for touching base with me.  JJ

Lol! It's so refreshing to have someone read the rules 1st! The nice thing about forums is that age isn't always obvious. I've become friends with people of all ages here. It's nice.  :)
Double vision has got to be tough! How on earth do you maintain your own site? *shudders*
I've been reading since I was 3 and have never stopped! My dad was the same way, but I definitely inherited his vision problems.
It felt like we were under attack here too. The opt-out list was Mr. Admin's compromise. He's a great guy, I hope you get to meet him.
If ever you need anything just pm me, or any Mod really. We are always around to help.

I'm having a major problem with the double vision, and I won't downplay that, Drypen. Some days I have a pity party.  I had a detached retina a bit over two years ago, and five surgeries left me with a mess. I was very actively involved in graphics and teaching on a Paint Shop Pro site so I truly got knocked down a peg or two. But I muddle on, and I do OK most days. Thank goodness for books is all I have to say. I started reading at four and have never stopped.  I will read toothpaste tubes, and ingedients of cereal boxes, anything to read.... it's who I am. My site is almost seven years old and the members have hung in there with me over many broken bones and surgeries, a regular nightmare, but we still laugh and pick on each other, they are my lifeline. I agree about the "all ages" aspect.  I have a really young member (18) and a gal not much older than me at 75.  Not all are readers like me, but some are. As you know, readers come in all ages and sizes, it's almost like an addiction. I am blessed that my children also have my affiction.

Thank you for the welcome, Rotty.

Oh! I have a severe stigmatism so detached or torn retina has been a worry for a while. They told me as I got older it would start to reverse itself. Yeah right still waiting on that one lol.
I can understand the pity party. I doubt I'd do much better, honestly I'd probably be worse. I'm glad your forum friends helped you. The people around here are like that too.
Rotty is a card! We have so much fun together! Sweet too, to welcome you.
We call STP our addiction. You just wait. I'm sure you'll understand shortly lol.

I pray you never get the retina problem, Drypen. I had heard of it, of course, but never met anyone that had it.  I didn't know until I had it happen that it is actually pretty rare, so I hope that sets your mind at ease. It seems to be one of those things you only hear about when it happens because it is "news" like a solar flare or something.  My own opthamolagist missed it but because I was fussing sent me to a retinolologist to be on the safe side.  The opthamoligist thought I was having an allergic reaction to something.  ??? Oh well, what is, is.  But this has definitely slowed me down. Where once I zipped through websites, now I plow a rocky road.  So it will be awhile before I feel at ease here, please bear with me and my mistakes. JJ
