Jack Reacher
« on: March 14, 2013, 01:29 PM »
I just finished watching it on 1channel.ch

Well... that was a dud.  Tom Cruise does NOT do a good Reacher.  His lines were delivered wrong.  It was just the wrong tone.  Like he was rushing to get them out before he forgot them.  His big speech scene sounded exactly like he was standing on the high school podium welcoming the family to hear him graduate.

I gave it a 2 star.  If they had changed his name to Joe Smith and made it a different title removing it from the Reacher association,  I would have given it a 3.5.  Cruise is what would have kept from the 4.

I need to note, not because he is Cruise but because of the way he did the  part.  I'm sorry but I have seen that man act his butt of.  He just seemed to be going thru the motions to get a  paycheck on this one.

I have to agree, the movie wasn't bad but could have been so much better without Tom Cruise or like you said under another name. Jack Reacher is such an iconic character that it needed someone physically more in keeping with the guy described in detail in the books.  :(

I keep putting off watching it, since when it was announced that Tom Cruise was doing the movie, I said WTH. He just didn't live up to the image that I had floating around my mind as to what Reacher should encompass. I had thought that an unknown, physically imposing guy should have had the lead. Same as my expections should they ever take on Robert Crais' Joe Pike.
Tom Cruise can do a good job at most of his characters, but I think that Reacher was out of his league.
Can I just win the lottery so that my only decision in my life will be which book to read today? Please?

OK, this is comeing from a guy who hasn't read the Jack Reacher books.  But personally, I thought the movie was pretty good to watch, of course it wasn't Tom Cruise's best performance.  However the overall movie itself was pretty good to watch and I've seen some pretty bad movies lately.

Read the books.
It's as off as having Cheech and Chong play Kennedy and Nixon.

And by the way the books are very good.   You are missing out.

Okay, I watched the movie, and if you had never heard of Reacher or actually read about Reacher you would be entertained the same as my hubby that had never heard of Reacher before.
He needed to ask me to quit comparing Tom Cruise's acting to what I figured Reacher would do. WWRD What would Reacher do hehe

My pick would have been Clive Owen for Reacher

If you want to see the rest go to YouTube and search The Hire Clive Owen

Now THAT is Reacher.

We should be happy that Channing Tatum didn't become Reacher   :D

Clive Owen would have been a good choice, agreed.

This is true.  Top Gun was a mediocre choice but not the worst of em.  Now Clive... that's up there with the best.

Well as a Reacher fan I was not impressed when it was announced TC would be the lead.  I mean if you describe your hero as

"Reacher was a big man, six feet five inches tall, heavily built, and that night as always he looked a little ragged and unkempt. Lonely drivers wanted pleasant and unthreatening company, and Reacher knew from long experience that visually he was no one’s first choice of companion. Too intimidating." (A Wanted Man)

or do this?

"You’re in my house, fat boy,” I said. “But I’m going to give you a choice.”
“Choice of what?” said the big guy. Blankly. Surprised.
“A choice of exit strategies, fat boy,” I said.
     “Say what?” he said.
“What I mean is this,” I said. “You’re going to leave. That’s for sure. Your choice is about how you leave. Either you can walk out of here by yourself, or these other fat boys behind you are going to carry you out in a bucket.”
     “Oh yeah?” he said.
“For sure,” I said. “I’m going to count to three, OK, so you better choose real quick, right?”
     He glared at me.
     “One,” I counted. No response.
     “Two,” I counted. No response.
Then I cheated. Instead of counting three I headbutted him full in the face. Came off the back foot with a thrust up the legs and whipped my head forward and smashed it into his nose. It was beautifully done. The forehead is a perfect arch in all planes and very strong. The skull at the front is very thick. I have a ridge up there like concrete. The human head is very heavy. All kinds of neck muscles and back muscles balance it. It’s like getting hit in the face with a bowling ball. It’s always a surprise. People expect punching or kicking. A headbutt is always unexpected. It comes out of the blue.
It must have caved his whole face in. I guess I pulped his nose and smashed both his cheekbones. Jarred his little brain around real good. His legs crumpled and he hit the floor like a puppet with the strings cut. Like an ox in the slaughterhouse. His skull cracked on the concrete floor.
I stared around the knot of men. They were busy reassessing my status.
“Who’s next?” I said. “But this is like Vegas now, it’s double or quits. This guy is going to the hospital, maybe six weeks in a metal mask. So the next guy gets twelve weeks in the hospital, you understand that? Couple of smashed elbows, right? So who’s next?”" (Killing Floor).

How on earth did they think TC could do it.  I mean he is not even 5' with his hands up!!!  (exaggeration I know)  If the film had been released and was not advertised as a Reacher film then it would have been entertaining.  However, I just couldn't get passed the lack of everything from TC - as there is no way you could ever mistake the two.  Not only that it deviated from the book a fair amount.  Was this to compensate for TC lacking in so many areas?

Am looking forward to Lee Childs next book which is due out later in the year.  He is a wonderful author, have only read one of his books that I didn't like.  Not sure about any further films.  Possible considerations for replacement, in my opinion, are jim caviezel (person of interest), Shemar Moore (criminal minds), Gerard Butler (300), Russell Crowe (Gladiator), I mean there were a few to choose from not to mention they could have picked someone unknown, I know sacrilege in Hollywood but really TC just doesn't do it for me.
Enjoy the moment.....make someone's day and share a smile ;)

I am not a complete idiot, some parts are missing    :)
