How You Discover New Music?
« on: January 16, 2012, 12:00 PM »
I've listened to many artists and some of them I follow with a passion and just recently I've learned of some new artists while watching shows, so I wanna know how do you discover new music and new artists?

I am constantly trying to find new music to listen to... whether it be new bands or bands I've just never heard of...

I use many different approaches to find new music:

* You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
* You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
* You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
* You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

I also look at the top 100 singles, albums, and artists charts for each year for the genres I enjoy.

I also look up songs/artists on youtube and see what other related songs/artists come up.

I also look on purchase sites like You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login and see what others bought/searched based on bands I currently like.

I hope this helps... :)

It does, I'm trying to see if anyone watches something and they're like...Oh, that's a good song playing in the background...I wonder what it is. I know I watch One Tree Hill and one of the characters actually is a music artist so she plays stuff on the show and I would listen to it and then my curiousity is peaked because it's just so good. Like from there I heard Kate Voegele, Wakey!Wakey!, Laura Izibor, and The Wreckers. Some of the stuff I hear on their is good. Or if they use Pandora to find music.

I have XM radio (satellite radio) and the channels I listen to tend to play a good range of older and newer artists. When I hear one I like, I stalk them online, see who they might be touring with and check those bands out to see if I like them too.

With the invention of Shazam, I can find so much music when a song plays on tv or the radio. I've learned of so many songs and many artists. Do you seek out similar artists in the same genre or do you vary to multiple ones each day?

I mostly listen to the same genre. I love rock music of all kinds and styles.

I like looking up movie soundtracks if I hear a song I like during a commercial, but that hasn't happened in a while haha.

Good stuff there. They listen to music from all over the world, and some modern/new-5568 stuff & music I've never even heard of or believed I would like.

M83 for example, is a band that they introduced me to.
They also re-got me into Death cab for Cutie and Radiohead.

& I have At&t's u-verse, and the channels come with ones called "music choice" with all different genres. I usually just stay on the rock channel & there's some good stuff there as well. ^^

I use that site to download a lot of my music. No virus yet, so I'm not worried about it.

Wow, there's so many different ways that people discover music. Some of these websites I've actually never heard of. I knew of beemp3 but I didn't know it had a top 50 thing which sounds really cool.

I use Pandora to find artists similar to the ones I like, and listen to my local station's "new artist" segments.  I also try to go to local shows when possible.  I follow links from friends, and I use Soundhound on my phone to snag what's playing in the background at restaurants and such.  That has been my biggest help, by far.  It's a free app for android, and I think for iPod as well.

Through Youtube of course and the related videos you find there.

I'm really interested in cinematic/trailer music or composers that write film scores. There are many groups of composers that provide music for the film industry such as X-Ray Dog, Immediate Music and Two Steps From Hell to name a few.

I am lucky that I actually work around music, movies and books all the time.  It may seem typical but Billboard really does post lots that are released.  They also review them.  Here's the link.

Along with that, the music I recently bought is Gotye and Alabama Shakes.  I'm really liking them.

or you can google "top songs/music" from a particular country, or we can start our own list, as we have members from all of the world and they can tell us what is popular in their country...

grooveshark.com or youtube.com    they're my sources.

Still, I go for cover songs right now but somehow, my music taste is influence by books I'm reading...

for example, I'm listening to Death Cab for the Cutie because of the Gone Series by Michael Grant and there's this book by Gabrielle Zevin which has a list of songs as part of the story --- I learned about Flaming Lips & Velvet Underground there.
Wrath to Butch: That's you. You shall be called the Black Dagger warrior Dhestroyer....
Rhage: But you'll always be Butch to us, as well as hard-ass. Smart-ass. Royal pain in the ass... I think as long as there's an ASS in there, it'll be accurate.
