Music room - tell us what you listen too
« on: November 05, 2011, 07:12 AM »
When you're reading a particular book, or genre' - what type of music do you listen too? If it's something you love - up it here

There are quite a few books that I read where I'll listen to Loreena Mckennitt, two of them being Gabriel's Inferno by Sylvain Reynard and The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley (too little coffee to go searching through my library for other titles) - and it's hard for me to pick some of my favorites since I love all of her music
but here are a few

She Moved through the Fair
Incantation
Tango to Evora

it gives you an idea of the feel of her music..

I would also be interested to hear what other people who listen to her music read?

If you up your music - post the link!! - Inquiring minds and all.

Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots album by the Flaming LIps... I listened to them while reading Beth Revis' Across the Universe series and Maria Snyder's Inside Out.

Wrath to Butch: That's you. You shall be called the Black Dagger warrior Dhestroyer....
Rhage: But you'll always be Butch to us, as well as hard-ass. Smart-ass. Royal pain in the ass... I think as long as there's an ASS in there, it'll be accurate.
Zhadist: How about bASStard?

^LOL :P

Symphonic/gothic heavy metal music

I admire anyone who can read and listen to music simultaneously. :great:  I love to savor each, individually.

Speaking of savoring, if there are any fans of symphonic/gothic metal out there, I'd like to share a demo made by the band "Forest of Shadows", back in 1999, which includes the track: "The Silent Cry" at: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login  :notes:

Enjoy! :music:

I'm listening to "Open Wound", a track from Forest of Shadow's album: "Departure" whilst we speak - don't ya just love that some of their songs are approx 15 minutes long! {Graphic deleted due to possible malware attachment}

I can't read and listen to music at the same time but I can listen while I type and post.  I found this song on the website: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login  (which seems to use less 'energy' as it doesn't buffer like youtube videos do, on my computer - when I have dial-up speed.) ;)

:D  Totally! :D

If you like other gothic/doom metal, Forest of Shadows did a cover by the band 'Katatonia', entitled: "Rainroom" (also included on their promotional CD, back in 1999) which can be found at:

Cool, cool - I'll check it out.
I've been pretty heavy into industrial and heavy metal for years and that transitioned into this type of music.
But I also listen to stuff like Loreena Mckennitt and david Garett - I'm pretty eclectic - but heavy/industrial is my go-to music.

Thanks!!  :)

I tend to listen to everything depending on the book and my mood.  I am big into music and will listen to anything except opera.

Anything 80's like Bon Jovi, Guns n' Roses, Metallica, Poison, Def Leopard, Motley Crue, ect.

I just recently rediscovered Matchbox 20.  I love Hang You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login Damn, and Back to Good from their Yourself or Someone Like You album.

Another old favorite I have been listening to is Gotthard.  I can listen to Everything I Want over and over again.  You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

Anything from 30 STM, My Darkest Days, Eminem, Garbage, Zac Brown Band, Taylor Swift, Skillet, Boys II Men, Pink, AC/DC, Journey, The Used, Foreigner, Toby Keith, Hedley, Mumford and Sons, Bruno Mars, Tim Mcgraw, and George Michael are on most of my play lists.

My Favorite band of all time is still the Backstreet Boys.  I have been a big fan for about 17 years now. I don't see it changing in the future.  The difference now is I take my daughter to concerts with me. I do not have one playlist that does not have at least 2 or 3 BSB songs on it. My all time favorite BSB song is still Drowning.  You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

A song that at this moment is on 8 of my ten playlists is Cold by Loveless.  I just can not get this song out of my head.  You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

Have you ever listened to Tom Waits? He's one of my all-time fav's that I'll go to no matter what.
A few of my favorite's are Blood Money, Rain Dogs and Small Change - but check this one out - it's Primus (who doesn't love Les?) and Tom is the whiskey sounding voice throughout. (this song is SO freaking awesome!!!!!!)

ISM!!!   :-* :-*  I LOVE Tom Waits!!!  As well you should smack him for that comment!! My hubby doesn't love Tom for any length of time either but knows better than to make too many comments about him.  My youngest daughter loves him like I do and several of her friends now know who he is.  It makes me proud to spread the love.  My favorite song is  Gun Street Girl off Rain Dogs.  It's just brilliant!!!!

When y'all talk about 80s music I cringe.  I'm an 80s child but listened to The Smiths, Elvis Costello, Talking Heads, The Joy Division and their next incarnation, New Order.  I also LOVE Iggy Pop, David Bowie, The Police, Souxie and the Banshees, etc.  It goes on and on.  Now I listen to a very wide variety.  I love rap, alternative, and alt country.  I really don't like the country played on the radio.  It's too much like pop music.  I listen to Steve Earle, Ryan Adams, Civil Wars, Avett Brothers, Lyle Lovett, etc....  My Mother's Day present was tickets to see Lyle Lovett and his acoustic band.  It was FABULOUS!!!!  I really like Mumford and Sons and Laura Marling, too.

If you've never listened to Jeff Buckley's album, Grace, you should as soon as possible!! His version of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah is one of the most perfect recordings EVER!  The entire album is wonderful and has a timeless quality.  It's hard to pick out what decade it was recorded in and his voice is ethereal.  It's a real tragedy we lost him so young.

Another song that should be heard by all is Madeleine Peyroux singing I Think It's Going To Rain Today by Randy Newman.  It's another perfect recording!

I don't really listen while I read.  I normally get distracted by some aspect of the music and don't accomplish much if I'm trying to read.  When I'm not reading, music of some sort is always playing, sometimes even opera, as I'm a soprano.  No one else enjoys it but me so I'm alone and crying at the beauty of it.

"Oh, you can’t help that," said the Cat, "We’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad."
"How do you know I’m mad?" said Alice.
"You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn’t have come here.”
