If there is one game for which I envy Wii users, it is Cave Story. In the time when 3D games conquered the gaming world, this small Japanese game came and established such a large fan base that it got commercially ported to Nintendo Wii.
The story is of a 'silent' protagonist (there are no voices) who awakens in a damp cave, unarmed and with a case of amnesia and encounters a village full of rabbit-type creatures called 'Mimigas', who live in the island. With a few small skills we learn about the existence of an enemy, Doctor, and the red flowers which can turn any mimiga into a dangerous killing machine. So when an innocent mimiga gets kidnapped, our MC proceeds on a journey to rescue her and stop the doctor from gaining red flowers. From this simple plot, not much is expected but later in the game, our own actions begin to define how the plot continues and which weapons you get.(You can leave the floating island and have a bad end or you can let the island get destroyed after you destroy its core or you can try to save the island). There is whole variety of characters we meet throughout the journey and the game progresses in such a way that you might want to throw your keyboard onto the wall (FAIR WARNING!) in frustration of getting stuck before declaring that you got bored. Plus, for PC, the game is FREE!
PROS: Free game. Excellent story-line. Hidden secrets (dangerous to access). Amazing music (as long as you don't get stuck). Great weapons (with some annoying catches). Unique characters (could annoy you to death if you let them) and simple controls ( Arrow keys, 'Z' and 'X') Plus you can download the CAVE STORY deluxe pack from its tribute site. It involves complete soundtrack and some other goodies too. I am not even going to get started on the special bonus level 'The Sanctuary'/ 'Welcome To Hell!'/ 'Sacred Grounds'. That place is for speed-runs and believe me, it is addictive. (Wii users have an advantage there. They don't have to complete specific conditions to access it. They can just go to Sanctuary Mode). Also, get the best time and the character at title screen changes.
CONS: See brackets in PROS. You can easily get save games and walk-through at the site too. So it is easy to try to get a little help.
Rating: 9/10 (If it was 3D, I would have given it a 10)
