Guess the book by its first paragraph game (YA)
« on: June 29, 2012, 11:39 AM »
This is a little game I once played on GR and thought of bringing it to PTS so we could play it here as well.

It works like this: someone posts the first paragraph of the story of a book (preface included), and then we have to guess the book (and author) that quote belongs.

After someone guesses right, s/he will post their own challenge, i.e., another first paragraph for the rest of us to guess.

Here a few little rules to keep things neat:

1 – only YA books (it’s a rather vast genre, and it may include “mature YA”, thrillers and such, but no explicit scenes, please)

2 – the quote must be in English

3 – you must only post quotes of real books already published.
That means: no anthologies, no short stories, no special POV’s, no fanfics, and, definitely, no excerpts of books that haven’t been released yet.

4 – if passed one week, no one guessed the book, the quote will be replaced by another paragraph so the game can be continued.

That’s it!
Let's start the fun! :)

Here’s one to start us off:

Her parched throat burned with an unquenchable fire. She tried to swallow, but each desperate gulp left her wanting; her mouth was dry, there was no moisture left to cool her angry esophagus. The dizzying effect of the dehydration was affecting her memory. She couldn’t remember where she was or how she got there, but knew that if she didn’t find water soon, Death would painfully claim her. As she tried to get her bearings, a steady fog drifted in and surrounded her in an icy shroud. Dropping to her knees in anguish, she prepared to succumb to the sleep that she had been desperately fighting.

Right? Okay, my turn...

I clasp the flask between my hands even though the warmth from the tea has long since leached into the frozen air. My muscles are clenched tight against the cold. If a pack of wild dogs were to appear at this moment, the odds of scaling a tree before they attacked are not in my favor. I should get up, move around, and work the stiffness from my limbs. But instead I sit, as motionless as the rock beneath me, while the dawn begins to lighten the woods. I can't fight the sun. I can only watch helplessly as it drags me into a day that I've been dreading for months.

That's my guess... I'm not sure if I'm right, but a little sentence might've tipped me off. ;)

Thought I will try this game, so here it goes:

There.

Here was nothing left to say.

He covered her body with his, and as she put her arms around him she could picture him in all his incarnations: age five, and still blond; age eleven, sprouting; age thirteen, with the hands of a man. The moon rolled, sloe-eyed in the night sky; and she breathed in the scent of his skin. "I love you, " she said.

He kissed her so gently she wondered if she had imagined it. She pulled back slightly, to look into his eyes. And then there was a shot.

The Pact by Jodi Picoult? :)

Quote
I was almost clear of Valhalla Hall when a window
on the second floor opened and a backpack sailed
outside and plummeted to the ground in front of me.
Somehow, I stifled the surprised scream in my
throat. Especially since the backpack was followed
a second later by a guy who landed in a low, perfect
crouch. He got to his feet with ease, like the twentyfoot
fall was nothing to him, and I saw who he was.

LOL! Hey, Hudasee. Go post a quote now. :D

Ok here we go.

Quote
My pen falters, then falls from my knuckly grip, leaving a worm's trail of ink across Fedwren's paper. I have spoiled another leaf of the fine stuff, in what I suspect is a futile endeavor. I wonder if I can write this history, or if on every page there will be some sneaking show of a bitterness I thought long dead. I think myself cured of all spite, but when I touch pen to paper, the hurt of a boy bleeds out with the sea-spawned ink, until I suspect each carefully formed black letter scabs over some ancient scarlet wound

Firewings guessed correctly, so she will leave a new quote for us the next time she's on. Good luck! :)

Ok here we go :)

"The problem with some of the steamiest romances in Shakespeare is that everyone ends up dead. I never saw the point of going through all that anguish and passion and sneaking around just to end up with a pile of corpses. It didn’t seem right. So whenever my dad picked Romeo and Juliet for one of our family Shakespeare readings when I was a little kid, I always changed the ending so Juliet woke up in time. It drove Dad nuts, but I just couldn’t help it. I’m a girl who likes happy endings."
