Guess the book by its first paragraph game (YA)
« on: June 29, 2012, 11:39 AM »
This is a little game I once played on GR and thought of bringing it to PTS so we could play it here as well.

It works like this: someone posts the first paragraph of the story of a book (preface included), and then we have to guess the book (and author) that quote belongs.

After someone guesses right, s/he will post their own challenge, i.e., another first paragraph for the rest of us to guess.

Here a few little rules to keep things neat:

1 – only YA books (it’s a rather vast genre, and it may include “mature YA”, thrillers and such, but no explicit scenes, please)

2 – the quote must be in English

3 – you must only post quotes of real books already published.
That means: no anthologies, no short stories, no special POV’s, no fanfics, and, definitely, no excerpts of books that haven’t been released yet.

4 – if passed one week, no one guessed the book, the quote will be replaced by another paragraph so the game can be continued.

That’s it!
Let's start the fun! :)

Ok here we go :)

"The problem with some of the steamiest romances in Shakespeare is that everyone ends up dead. I never saw the point of going through all that anguish and passion and sneaking around just to end up with a pile of corpses. It didn’t seem right. So whenever my dad picked Romeo and Juliet for one of our family Shakespeare readings when I was a little kid, I always changed the ending so Juliet woke up in time. It drove Dad nuts, but I just couldn’t help it. I’m a girl who likes happy endings."

I probably never would have gotten this one because I haven't read it. However, I bought it for my daughter and she put it on my nook to read since her sony was acting up. She didn't know how to use the bookmark so everytime I opened my nook for three days, this is what I read!!!

Since this is my first submission, please let me know if I did this right or if I need to do something different. Good Luck!

"The dress in the window of Shelly’s Boutique was not a tasteful pink. It was an unnatural, overly shiny, shout-in-your-face pink. Barbie-aisle pink. Putrid-antidiarrhea-medicine pink. Slutty-disco-queen-on-LSD pink. Or, as the residents of Barton, Texas (population 5,853), would probably refer to it: hawt pank.."

Ok good, I just wanted to make sure. AND, I know right! This is the first book that came to mind when I saw this game.  I laughed so hard reading just the first line that I knew I had to give this book a chance and I'm glad I did. The rest of the book was funny like this too.
PS. Where is the thank you button on this thread?  ;)

I fluked it, did I? Woo hoo! :D

Ok my turn, here goes.......

I have three simple wishes. They’re really not too much to ask.

The first is to attend the winter formal dressed like Marie Antoinette. I want a wig so elaborate it could cage a bird and a dress so wide I’ll only be able to enter the dance through a set of double doors. But I’ll hold my skirts high as I arrive to reveal a pair of platform combat boots, so everyone can see that, underneath the frills, I’m punk-rock tough

*sorry had to add the second paragraph otherwise, we won't / can't go any further with the first one only.

My turn...

Moving back home sucked. Everything about this town reminded me of why the hell I’d wanted to get away. I had a life in Tuscaloosa and I needed that life to
escape. Here, I was Marcus Hardy. No matter where I went people knew me. They knew my family. And now... they were talking about my family. Which is why
I had come home. Leaving my sister and mother here alone to face this was impossible. The scandal hovering over our heads took away all my choices and my
freedom. Right now, few people knew but it was only a matter of time. Soon the entire coastal town of Sea Breeze, Alabama would know what my dad was doing
or should I say, who my dad was doing. King of the Mercedes car dealerships along the Gulf Coast had been a high enough title for some little gold digging whore
only a few years older than me to jump in bed with my dear ‘oll dad. The one time I’d seen the home wrecker working behind the desk right outside Dad’s office
I’d known something wasn’t right. She was young and smoking hot and apparently money hungry.

Good luck!!

That summer, at a bar on Mertie Creek, two truckers by the names of Saddle Tramp and Mad Dog emerged from a night of drinking booze and listening to Kenny Chesney on the jukebox to find girls’ underwear—one thong, one Days of the Week (Sunday), and one monkey face—lying across their windshields. That same summer, rotten fish of an unidentified variety was found in the vent openings of several bathrooms at the Balmeade Country Club, and nobody suspected the connection. In late August, Lucretia Cawley-Smith was forced to admit to herself that she loved her oldest daughter best. Jodee McGowen stopped wearing seagulls on her nail polish for good. And on September 1, a migrant worker by the name of Enrico Fiol left Georgia carrying a tuft of dog fur in his shirt pocket.

Cool cool...ok how about this?

“You arrogant son of a bitch,” I say. Well, maybe I growl it. It's hard to say for certain. But I can tell you this. I am fuming, smoke flying out of my ears, mad as I take the engagement ring off my finger, shove it into his hand and march toward the stage. The march to the stage feels like it takes forever because there are a million thoughts running through my mind. Did all these people come here because they really thought I'd say yes?
