Guess the book by its first paragraph game (YA)
« on: June 29, 2012, 11:39 AM »
This is a little game I once played on GR and thought of bringing it to PTS so we could play it here as well.

It works like this: someone posts the first paragraph of the story of a book (preface included), and then we have to guess the book (and author) that quote belongs.

After someone guesses right, s/he will post their own challenge, i.e., another first paragraph for the rest of us to guess.

Here a few little rules to keep things neat:

1 – only YA books (it’s a rather vast genre, and it may include “mature YA”, thrillers and such, but no explicit scenes, please)

2 – the quote must be in English

3 – you must only post quotes of real books already published.
That means: no anthologies, no short stories, no special POV’s, no fanfics, and, definitely, no excerpts of books that haven’t been released yet.

4 – if passed one week, no one guessed the book, the quote will be replaced by another paragraph so the game can be continued.

That’s it!
Let's start the fun! :)

here you go  :)

"I turned down the hall, letting my appearance shape-shift as I walked.  The sensation was so familiar, so second-nature to me that I didn’t even need to see my exterior to know what was happening.  My petite frame grew taller, the slim build still staying slim but taking on a leaner, harder edge.  My skin paled to death-white, faint tan disappearing.  The hair, already to my mid-back, stayed the same length but darkened to jet black, the fine waviness turning straight and coarse.  My breasts--impressive by most standards--became larger still, rivaling those of the comic book heroines this guy had undoubtedly grown up with."

Sounds a lot like a Georgina Kincaid book... Succubus Blues by Richelle Mead?

Ok. Here it is:

There's a stack of folders piled up on the desk in front of me. All neatly labeled and indexed. A file for every month that I was in The Hormones. It's weird to see a year of your life measured out in press cuttings; legal documents; and receipts from restaurants, hotels, and musical-instrument shops.

Not really lol. Some words are a bit similar to words I know. But very faintly similar, so I checked with my dear friend Google Translator. :P ;) (only the translations of complex languages aren't very good... take Portuguese as an example, too. ;))

It's something about wishing us good luck with our lives and that dying is a way of us continuing living, right?

Yeah, you were right in away...just that it wasn't about US but about the 77 dead people and the survivers in Utøya who was killed by a "psycopath" last year in 22 July  :(

Sorry it took so long for me to pick the next one....here it is though.

"Teenage girls are powerful creatures. I remember; I was once one of them. They are relentless and underutilized. They want what they want, and they will do what they must to get it. Love, possessions, beauty, food, sweets, friends. Unless they are crushed so hard as to give up. But then they are just as relentless, only seeking different things. Destruction, annihilation. Unless they can find a way to birth something beautiful out of themselves. In this way teenage girls and Night’s children are not that much different, are we?"

Ok how about this:

EVERY WOMAN HAS A fantasy about running into the man who broke her heart. In such a fantasy, she’d be walking down the street, her well-dressed and gorgeous husband (let’s say George Clooney, shall we, circa Ocean’s 11) caressing her, perhaps nuzzling her neck because he can’t help himself. She’d be wearing something fabulous, her hair would be glossy and perfect, she and Clooney would have just left the nicest restaurant in town, perhaps, or the poshest jewelry shop, because he insisted on buying her yet another token of his love—and then, oh, my goodness, who’s that? Why it’s him, the first man she ever loved, the one who didn’t just break her young and loyal heart, but shattered it. He’s not looking so good these days. No, the years have not been kind. He’s gray—or, better yet, balding—and slackly overweight, his posture hunched. He looks at her, recognizing immediately that the biggest mistake of his life was dumping her. Pleasantries will be exchanged. Clooney will shake his hand, giving Adored Wife a wry look (Him? Really?), and as the happy couple walks away to their snazzy car, the heartbreaker of old is already forgotten. But he will gaze longingly after her, wondering how he ever could’ve been so blind.
