Any one else NOT like the HUNGER GAMES?
« on: March 19, 2012, 08:39 PM »
I know this isn't a typical review, but I didn't really know where to post this, and I wanted to know if there is anyone out there who disliked the hunger games?.. I read the first book and got in to it, then the story fell short and the last 2 books were such a drag I could barely read them,.. It had potential, but it just went in this weird direction I did not like, (twilight was like this for me, I enjoyed it all up to the 4th book which was horrible and ruined the story with the vampire spawn..but thats another story) I just hate when I read a series that starts out good, and I feel the Author ruined it..

So any one out there who didn't like the hunger games? I think the movie will be better on the book on this and I hate movies.

I may be kicked off the board for this but I have never read them. Plan to at some point but up until now, they keep getting pushed down the TR list.  Will read the book before I see the movie though.

I could barely push through the first book. I agree that it had potential and I hadn't read a book with an idea quite like that one before, although I'm not saying that there isn't a similar book somewhere out there. It would be ideal if the plot were given to an already successful author who knew how to captivate an audience.

The so called 'romance' between the main character and Peeta really bored me and was unoriginal. Pretending to be in love at first to gain sympathy before actually falling in love for real. Been done. So any times.

The main character annoyed me, I've forgotten her name now. I don't know why, but I felt absolutely nothing for her, I couldn't have cared less whether she lived or died.

I can't even begin on the last two books. They were even worse. Absolute waste of my time. I'm only glad I downloaded it for free on here rather than waste my money. The first one was a success so she thought she'd drag it out to gain more money.

So, to answer your question, I am another person who dislikes the Hunger Games.

I made it a little ways into book 2 and couldn't tolerate it any longer. So, no, you aren't the only one.

(It also smacks of a book called Battle Royale by Koushun Takami, a little too much)

I did like the Hunger Games, (the first book was the best though, the others were a little slow), but I agree with you about Battle Royale. The whole series was a complete rip-off :(

Nah, I haven't read them, and don't have any intentions to. Doesn't sound like my cuppa-T.

I can say that i have split up opinion. I liked first one and second but i felt that third one was too rushed, it could have been 100 pages longer and a much longer ending. It was so quickly finished that i didnt like it. Then again i hated Katniss, well 60% of time i hated her, and i also didn't love the fact that all three books were in only her POV...{though a lot of ya are in first POV} and i think books would be on a whole different level if it were from third person and that POV shifted from Katniss to Peeta to Gail. As for the idea it does look like battle royale:

Under the guise of a "study trip," a group of students from Shiroiwa Junior High School in the fictional town of Shiroiwa (Kagawa Prefecture) are gassed on a bus. They awaken in the Okishima Island School on Okishima, an isolated, evacuated island. They learn that they have been placed in an event called the Program.
According to the rules, every year since 1947, 42 third-year high school students are isolated, and each student is required to fight to the death until one student remains. Their movements are tracked by metal collars around their necks, which contain tracking and listening devices; if any student should attempt to escape the Program, or enter declared forbidden zones, a bomb will be detonated in the collar, killing the wearer. If no one dies in a 24 hour time period, there will be no winner and all collars will be detonated simultaneously.

still, i cant say i did not like them, there were some stuff and some characters i pretty much liked.
AND movie was awesome :D

I couldn't make it through the first few paragraphs and I try every once in a while but I just end up reading the first few paragraphs over and over again.

I feel neutral about this series actually. I see the potential and don't have any feelings against it, but I won't fall in line for it.. It just doesn't have the oomph factor for me.  :)
Saying thank you is more than good manners.  It is good spirituality.

Well, I'm definitely not a fan of dystopia, but every genre has a certain quantity of amazing books, that are perfect despite reader's preferences. The Hunger Games belong to that quantity! I'm mad at myself, that I haven't read the trilogy earlier. And by the way, I liked the fourth book of Twilight saga better than the first three, so tastes differ! :)

Well, I could never understand the hype about those books. Yes, the first one was entertaining and quick to read. I pushed through the second carried by the momentum (read the two back to back) and never bothered to buy the third. The story seems quite déjà vu (I kept thinking about Running Man, an old Arnold Schwarzenegger movie), and the romance thing was horrid, IMO. Everyone just kept accusing Katniss of being basically a bitch for not falling in love with Peeta (ugh at that name). It ended up on getting on my nerves. And they just WANTED her to be a rebel, a symbol of their revolution or something. She was pushed around all the time, without any choice really. I find this heroine pretty sterile, and she never touched me emotionally.

Just my opinion, sorry ;D

The concept was decent, and I liked Katniss, but overall I didn't enjoy the series hugely.

For a start, the narrative voice was basically emotionally dead.
Also, the setting wasn't fabulous-- one of the hallmarks of good science fiction/fantasy is a detailed setting and Suzanne Collins basically did the bare minimum. There didn't even appear to be anything in the world outside of Panem.
And the romance plot line was extraordinarily irritating.

i somewhat agree with Plaything. but honestly, i liked the series (well, a lot more at the beginning). i even finished the entire trilogy in a week because it was a page-turner (many parts are exciting, really).

but i'm not saying everyone should like it too. we all differ in taste and preferences, right? ^.^

in addition, i thought the first one was great. i read it and then found the ending was hanging so i read the second one. the ending was again hanging so i read the third one. but there were little or no resolution to the build up (disappointing ending, the third part is not really satisfying). the story could be better, though. :)

if we did otherwise, we would not be ourselves.

I think you should read the book any because the move was awful. (from my point of view of course) i mean i felt like the movie had rushed into everything i a sure you that you will be so confused read the book for before the movie an how knows you might like the book.

IDK, I loved the books as they were such a page turner that I read all three in under 2 days. I agree that there were some issues, but that would only be a problem if the series wasn't YA. As such most YA books (with the obvious exception of the Harry Potter series) tend to be less involved, more shallow in character and shorter. I would have liked more involvement in deeper emotional connections with the main character Katniss. But as an obviously troubled teen who has been thrown into the role of caregiver for years, she has become emotionally stunted in ways. She is closed off for self protection and unable to form many of those connections. It seems to me like a very normal psychological reaction to terrible circumstances. Not being a psychologist I am just guessing tho! I have to admit that I have seen similar circumstances (parenting your parent & siblings, tragedy, death, abuse & failed relationships) take a friend of mine 15 years to start the process of healing to overcome. Katniss took a few of years? All in all I laughed, I cried, I enjoyed, i couldn't put down the books. And I rarely am able to say that about an entire series. Isn't that the best way!

I've just read book 1+ 2, and saw the movie and I really liked them :cheesy:
Katniss irritates me at times, but what the heck. I enjoy when a book moves me in any way.

Thank God. I tot I was alone. I have never been able to read beyond the first chapter. I find her style of writing too dull. I don't understand the hype about them.
